Two years of being in the Zombie Apocalypse would make a person more alert over danger and less trusting over anyone and everyone they meet.

That's why neither blinked in surprise as they both ended up with a throat pushed to their throats instead of a friendly wave.

Neither moving their knife away, even if they would both end up dead if either tried anything stupid.

If was a lose-lose or a win-win, depending who you asked.

Both held the others killer glare oddly well, impressing each other secretly and catching their interests over how fast their reaction was when sensing each other.

Both moved for the kill, both standing as a victor who weren't be the one to die today.

"M-Mikasa"

That caused both to slowly glance towards the scared ten year old boy who was shaking in fear where he stood, clutching a book to his chest as he stared wide eye at the scene.

"If you have a child around, I'm guessing you're not working with those assholes further in the city. They don't keep .. weaklings around unless it's for entertainment" He spoke first, loosening his grip on his knife to show he wasn't seeing her a real threat anymore but he still kept his knife to her throat in case she tried anything against him.

They were still knife to throat after all and why they were just inches apart, either could do a simple wrist movement and kill the other.

He had to stay cautious, even if she held a child with her.

It was the end of the world after all.

"I'm sensing you thought I was with such assholes ahead but how do I know you won't be an issue?" She calmly replied, her expression unreadable to anyone but him who held a matching expression to her, both seeing past the acts and knowing the truth by just looking into the other eyes.

"You don't" He admitted, giving a slight shrug as he wouldn't trust him if he stood in her shoes.

She had a child to protect after all and they clearly wondered around alone, anyone and anything thing was a threat to their survival now.

"Rather honest for a guy with his knife to my throat" She shot back, a slight teasing tone in her voice that he happily picked up and couldn't help the twitch in his lips.

"I can't promise to not be a problem towards you, we don't know what the future may hold. But, I won't waste time with you either when those assholes are close by and both you and the boy would pay cruel prices in meeting them" The guy muttered back in a low voice, making sure that only she would heard him before he slowly lowered his knife showing he meant them no harm.

He glanced down to her own knife to his throat, raising an eyebrow as he waited for her to lower it or kill him already. Neither of them had time to waste and he knew she was capable of doing either of the two choices.

She let a sigh escape her lips before lowing her knife, placing it away as he did the same with his own. Both showing they weren't a real threat for now at least and understand the main danger hanging around them both.

"I'm Armin, have you seen the library?" Armin spoke up with a friendly smile, a nervous look in his eyes as he stepped forward.

The guy glanced down, raising an eyebrow as he noticed the boy get up. He wore a plastic, see-through waterproof poncho that must would wear during a water slide at an amused park, hood up over his head and it ended at his ankles showing it to be an adult size. But that wasn't the strangest part, a small hole cut opposite to his cargo pants belt look beside the zipper that a black dog leash clipped onto with the rest of the leash popped out from the hole in his poncho and the handle hoop having Mikasa wrist inside.

"Look, we have to walk rather far sometimes and he likes to read. It passes the time and distracts him, plus he's rather smart and fears becoming dumb since he can't go to school anymore. This way, he can happily get lost into his books while we walk along and I can stop him from falling behind, stopping or pull him around cars or away from zombies when needed. It's pretty much the same as a child strap but just, longer and better" Mikasa explained her reasoning over using a dog leash on her childhood friend since she knew if there wasn't an apocalypse she would have had the police called on her already. She didn't see the problem, it was the same as a child strange but just longer and stronger, it was long lasting too.

Take notes parents..

"And it works?" He asked impress, looking down to the leash than back to the book that Armin still clung too.

"Much better than you would expect" Mikasa admitted with a slight shrug.

"Damn, I got to get one for shitty four-eyes. She's always running off and walking into stuff" He commented as he held his chin, nodding in agreement over the idea.

"Um, sir? The l-library" Armin shyly spoke up again, stepping closer to his big sister and hiding behind her leg a little.

"Just down the road, need a new book?" He replied, pointing with his thumb over his shoulder and staring down at the boy who hid behind Mikasa even more.

"Yeah, he's finish his math book and wants a science one now" Mikasa mumbled, ruffling the young boy hair in hopes to comfort him a little.

"Come on, I'll go with you. Outsiders to the city always ends up caught in traps. I've got to pass the library to sneak out anyway" He offered, not really knowing why he was offering to help the strangers but he knew he couldn't just leave a child to walk into a death trap. Plus, the women had a pretty face and clearly had a bit of spunk to her, she didn't deserve what would happen to her if the group did capture her.

And that's how Levi met with Mikasa and Armin, the three making a truce together as they walked towards the bookshop.

Levi checking the library out and killing any unwelcomed dead guests before giving the all clear to the two. Mikasa glancing around, listening for groaning bodies before turning to Armin who was more like a second brother to her now.

The last of her family, someone she couldn't lose and Levi knew it by the look in her eyes.

Levi watching Mikasa slipped the leash hoop off her wrist, giving to Armin before nodding her head for him to explore the library and pick out a new book he wanted.

He wasn't the best person at making a chit chat and decided to keep with the content silence before Mikasa spoke up. Both passing on intel over the area, what they've seen and the rumours they heard during their travels. Mikasa mostly giving the gossip while Levi warned her over the nasty group of assholes hiding deep in the city.

Both enjoying the strange conversation together, they felt human for a moment.

But than a gun shot echoed through the air making them both rush towards the doors and seeing a jeep turning round the corner they both had unwelcoming met.

Both turning to each other before sharing a knowing nod, Levi looking for a new exit for them while Mikasa rushed to find Armin and grabbed his hand before hurrying back over to Levi.

They had to leave .. NOW!

Armin whispering over the book he had picked up, a geography one but falling into a silence as Mikasa whispered to him over having to stay really quiet since bad men were close by. Armin may have only been ten but he was rather grown up before the zombie apocalypse and since it started, he had grown up even more that most would assume he was an adult or even a wise old man with his mind.

Levi kicking the door open, knowing the two of them only held a fighting knife and the other holding a survival knife. Unknown that Armin had a pocket knife folded up in his pocket for last resort if Mikasa couldn't reach him in time.

But even then, both adults knew they wouldn't win a fight against those driving a jeep and holding guns.

He froze as he noticed someone screaming out desperately for help, the jeep engine being told up as the patrol group of assholes laughed. Mikasa freezing up as something slamming their hands against the glass door, crying out for help as they spotted the three inside.

"M-Mikasa" Armin whimpered and Mikasa quickly lifted him up, cringing as the book fell from his shaking hands and landing with what felt like an echoing thud.

One of the assholes stopping behind the person outside, tilting his head as he wondered who they were calling out before spotting the three inside.

"Shit" Levi hissed out, rushing over to Mikasa and grabbing her arm, yanking her along towards the fire exit.

"Mikasa, I'm scared" Armin sobbed making Mikasa just silently push his head into her shoulder, trying to hide him up from the world around them as she started running towards the exit, flinching as another gunshot filled the air and the glass doors were soon shattering.

"Look, I'm sure you're pretty badass but you'll be running with a boy whose a little old for piggy back rides. Run towards the east rode, this alley way will lead you out not far from it. A red skoda fabia car is parked with the keys hidden under the seat. Sit inside and get ready to drive off but don't drive off without me, if I don't reach you in ten minutes .. than drive without looking back" Levi ordered as he tried shielding the two with his own bodies as they took over behind a bookshelf but knowing it won't give much protection.

"Thank you and if you don't show up, I'll turn the car around and pick you up" Mikasa snapped back, a look warning him that he better reach the car no matter what.

"Like I'd miss the chance of someone driving me around, now go" Levi smirked back, patting her lower back and nodding towards the fire door.

He gave a reassuring look as she glanced over her shoulder to him once more before running out the door and ran straight towards the car, not looking back as she had faith in the strange little man who just five minutes ago, she held a knife to his throat.

"What's a skoda fabia?" Armin innocently asked, his voice muffled by her shoulder.

"No clue but he said it was red, look out for a red car" Mikasa answered without a second thought as Armin lifted his head, leaning it sideways but making sure he could see a little in hopes of helping to find the car.

Mikasa letting a breath of relief out as she did find a random car parted on the side of the road, it was right before the leaving sign of the city and she wasted no time in rushing over. Sure, she wasn't doubting Levi skills of escaping the assholes but she knew he was still nothing but a human.

He could only last so long and gain so much escape time until he'd lose. She couldn't waste a single second he was giving her to get Armin to safety and she was thankful for his hidden kindness.

Most would have just left them to their doom or tried taking their lives.

It was a cruel world before but now, it was just plan harsh as everyone true desires leaked out.

She shook away her dark thoughts, placing Armin in the seat behind the drivers and throwing her bag by his feet. Placing the car seat on him and promising he could take his own bag off once they get a safe distance away before closing the door. She hurried to the driver seat, frowning as she couldn't even get in without pushing the seat back ... a lot for her leg room.

"Not a single giggle towards him" Mikasa warned as Armin laughed over the small action, he was never in a car unless Grisha was driving in before hand but he's understand about what it means when someone has to move the seat back.

"I won't but it's nice I'm not the only little one around anymore" Armin grinned cheekily, giving a cute little giggle as Mikasa shook her head amused before closing the driver door and finding the keys.

They were under the driver seat, she was surprised he left them in the car but then again, for quick escapes it was best to keep the key close to the car.

She soon got the engine running, glancing out of the mirror for the older man to come into view and tapping her fingers on the steering wheel to hold back her distress over the whole matter.

She was trusting some stranger that she's hardly knows and actually tried killing almost ten minutes ago now and yet, he was risking his life for them both.

She was only willing to wait a little longer for him to reach them, she just didn't understand why she would risk Armin life for the man.

She could just drive off right now, leave the unknown man as bait to the bad people and use the gained head start to put as much distance as she could between them and the assholes.

But his name was Levi.

He decided not to kill them, holding back once he saw Armin.

He decided to stop them from falling into any traps laid out by the assholes.

He decided to use his own body to shield them while she held Armin in her arms.

He decided to gain extra time for her to get away from Armin, even when they both knew his chances against the assholes.

He decided to trust her with the car keys.

He was a stranger and yet, he did more for her in the past ten minutes then most have in her life.

He couldn't help the sour feeling in her gut as she thought about leaving him for dead to gain a better survival chance for her and Armin.

"Keep your head low and don't repeat any words I might be saying in the next couple minutes" Mikasa ordered as she looked round her seat, reversing the car as Armin just gave an understanding nod.

And that's how she ended up playing chicken with the assholes driving the jeep, how she ended up doing her first ever handbreak turn and smacking the side of the car into one of the assholes. She's never even driven before, sure, she's watched Grisha when he drove but she never had any lessons or did paper test.

She was rather thankfully for movies and her watchful eye over Grisha, even if her driving skills were a little sketchy right now.

"Get in!" She called out as she spotted Levi inside the library, a couple of asshole bodies limp on the ground while he held his knife.

"Can you even fucking drive!" Levi screamed back in pure shock and horror before still rushing over, grabbing something from the ground before leaving the library.

"I just did .. somehow" Mikasa mumbled back awkwardly, using the wing mirror to check on Armin who had a tight grasp to his car door handle.

"You doing okay, Armin?" Mikasa nervously asked, not even jumping as Levi flung the passenger door open before hopping in the passenger chair and slamming the door close.

"Leave the kid to be terrified on his own and start driving already" Levi snapped back and Mikasa weakly nodded before driving off again.

"Do you want t o swap once we're out of the city?" Mikasa asked with a shameful and cringing look on her face as she knew she wasn't the best first time driver by the two males reactions right now.

"Well, I know you can break at least. Just listen to my directions before I don't think I can pull my fingers out of the car door" Levi muttered back, his grip even tighter on the door handle as he pushed back into the seat as much as he could and already placed his seatbelt on.

"Sorry .. never thought I needed to learn how to drive before" Mikasa guilty answered, keeping her eyes on the road as she couldn't handle anymore invisible punches over her driving skills by the reactions from the two.

"Well, since you haven't killed us .. great fucking job" Levi shakily breathed out, trying to compliment the women since she did come back for him when most wouldn't have. But he was also rather scared for his life and would rather face the assholes alone then be stuck with her driving much longer.

"But I might want to cancel my second driving lesson" Mikasa tried joking, hoping to lighten the mood a little.

"I feel sick" Armin groaned in the background, turning even more pale making both adults panic a little.

"For god shake pull over" Levi grumbled out, he wasn't not dealing with puke in the car.
