Chapter 2
My teacher let me leave class early to go get ready for the practice match. "Thank you, Sensei!" I said as she handed me the homework.
"Of course, I used to play volleyball myself and I understand the feeling of wanting to beat your rivals." I laughed. It's funny to think of my teacher playing sports in high school. "Anyways, wish everyone good luck for me!" I nodded and began to make my way to the gym. When I got there I was surprised to see Hinata and Kageyama already inside practicing.
"Oh, hi guys," I said slightly confused. "What're you doing here?"
"We left class early to warm up. Kageyama set against the wall as Hinata stretched.
"Wow. I wouldn't think your teachers would let you leave early given your grades."
"Well," Hinata said standing up, "our teaches didn't let us go." I looked back and forth between them confused by what he meant.
Kageyama caught the ball and turned around. "Don't tell anyone but... we skipped class." He whispered.
I shook my head. "As assistant manager I have to advise against it. You know if Sensei or Daichi finds out-"
"Please don't tell Sensei, (f/n)-chan!" Hinata begged running up to me.
"Ugh, I wont."
He calmed down and thanked me, but I warned them they shouldn't skip class again, even for a match. Their grades couldn't afford it.
I went to the equipment closet and got the net, poles, and other equipment out. Hinata and Kageyama helped me put it up and they started practicing their quick. It was truly amazing. Kageyama's inhuman accuracy combined with Hinata's crazy reflexes and height made up something no one's ever seen before. A couple times before, I'd notice a person or two who pass by the gym, and when they see the monster quick, their faces are priceless - awe and shock take form.
And now here I was, feeling the same emotions as those bystanders as I watched the duo practice. It's one thing to see it, and another to grow up knowing the sport but never seeing anything like it in any game watched. "One more!" They kept saying. I continued to throw the balls into the air, Kageyama continued to set them, and Hinata continued to spike them. I giggled as Hinata missed set and fell. Hinata made a a face at me.
"Sorry, it's just funny."
"I'm trying." He said.
"I know. Another?" I asked holding up another ball. Hinata and Kageyama glanced at each other and smiled.
"We wanna see you play (f/n)-chan!" Hinata smiled, Kageyama coming up behind him with a smirk.
"M-me?" I felt my face get warm.
"Yeah. You're always talking about how you love volleyball, and your face is really weird when you see us play. So do you want to practice with us (f/n)-san?" Kageyama picked up a ball off the floor and help it out to me. I smiled and walked over to him. "Hinata will toss, I can set to you. I 'll set it lower for you, okay?"
I made a face at him, but answered, "Sure, okay!"
Hinata ran over to the side of the court. "Ready?" I nodded.
He threw up the ball to Kageyama and I began to run toward the net. I watched the ball go up from Kageyama's fingers, and jumped as I reached the net. Everything slowed down as though the world was moving in slow motion, and my arm swung forward. My hand made contact with the soft texture. My body began to fall below the net. I watched the ball slam straight down against the gym floor. I landed on my feet and turned to Kageyama. "Nice toss!" I said excitedly. My whole body was shaking with energy, but he didn't reply. His face was pale and shocked.
Finally he said, "What was that?"
My face fell. "W-was it really that bad? I guess I'm a little out of practice, plus I-"
"That was totally wicked!" Hinata yelled out, throwing his hands into the air. (If you don't get that reference i'm disappointed.)
"(f/n)-san, why aren't you on the girls' team?" Kageyama asked.
"Well, um-"
I was cut off by a single person'd clap.
"Tobio-channn!" He hummed. "Maybe if you had her on your team, you could've beat us at the interhighs." I looked from Kageyama to Hinata. They looked stern. The boy walked into the gym. "What? You're not going to say hello to your old teammate? And honestly, it's a bit rude to call a girl by her first name, she even looks older than you, too. How rude." I noticed he had an Aoba Johsai logo on his shirt as he came closer.
"Sorry, but you're early and we're practicing. And by the way, I asked Kageyama to call me by my first name." I said, trying to give off as much attitude as possible. I could tell both of the boys behind me were annoyed, so I'd have to talk for them.
"Oh, are you the new manager? You're very cute you know? I bet these boys just pesker you all day." He walked up to me until our faces almost met, although he was about five inches taller than me.
"I'm the assistant manager, and I happen to enjoy the company of my friends. The only person peskering me is you, you pervert!" I snapped.
His eyes widened and he looked embarrassed. "Uh, well then, I guess I should leave you guys to practice then." He stiffened up and turned to walk out. "See you soon! And you too assistant manager!" The condescending tone in his voice was strong as the three of us watched him walk down the path. Hinata breathed a sigh of relief and his body and mood relaxed.
"Boy, that guy is scary! Thank you (f/n)-senpai."
I cringed at him calling me senpai, but said your welcome. "Who was that guy anyways?" I asked.
Kageyama, who had been quiet since the odd boy left stepped forward. "Oikawa Tooru. He's the captain and setter of Aoba Johsai. He was my senpai in Junior High, I learned everything from watching him."
"Well, all he seems like to me is a huge jerk."
"He is," Hinata grumbled, "and he has a bunch of fangirls too! But you didn't even seemed fazed by his looks (f/n)-chan, are you okay? He seemed to be hitting on you." He made a worried and angry face.
I laughed. "Yes, Im fine. And don't you worry Hinata I'm sure you'll have fangirls in your third year, too. You should be tall by then at least." I laughed again at his dreamy-eyed face.
"But you should be careful (f/n)-chan! I'm pretty sure he uses some kind of alien brain waves to seduce girls!"
"Hinata, that's not possible." Kageyama and I said together. He looked up as if the Oikawa guy actually had powers or not.
I turned to see Daichi, Sugawara, and Asahi outside the door. They came in and helped me collect the balls scattered around the room. I didn't bother to tell them about our encounter with Aoba Johsai's captain. Soon after, Yu and Ryu arrived with Tsukishima and Yamaguchi not far behind. After everyone else arrived, Daichi called a quick meeting.
"Okay guys," He started. "This is our first match with Aoba Johsai since the Interhigh prelims. We may have lost to them, but even then we almost beat them. Even if we stuggled, we were innocent as a team. But now we know more, and we've practiced harder. Today is the day we'll beat our rivals, Aoba Johsai!"
Everyone yelled and cheered. I loved seeing them hopeful and happy. This was my family, and this volleyball court was our home.
