forty-two.

I just finished editing my Youtube video. I even made a cute thumbnail, and it's ready to be uploaded to Youtube. Now I just need wifi, and it will probably take at the most, thirty minutes for my video to get uploaded.

"Hey, I'm around the hospital right now, can you spot any hotels?" Colby asks, pulling me out of my thoughts.

"Why don't I just google this stuff up?" I ask, taking out my phone.

As it loads, Colby asks, "So, did you finish your editing?"

"Yep, now all I have to do is upload it to Youtube, but I don't have any wifi," I mumble. He nods in understanding. "Oh! The Hilton Garden Inn is like five minutes away. Just take a right, I know for a fact that they're high quality and are good as hell."

"Kay, I'm taking a right," Colby agrees.

He takes a right and the Hilton was on our left. Colby drives in, parks, and we both hop out. We head into the hotel and approach the front desk woman.

"Hello, how can I help you both today?" The woman asks.

"Oh, we would like to get a hotel room for tonight," Colby says.

Suddenly, Kai texts me.

K: Hey. Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner...

K: Sam had a heart attack, then his right coronary artery got clogged in the process of reviving him. I was observing his surgery when you texted. He's stable at the moment, but is just managing to keep breathing... I'm so sorry, Ash<3

I cover my mouth.

No way in hell is Sam dying.

"Ash, are you okay with one or two beds?" Colby asks. He then peers down at me,"Hey... are you okay?"

"Sam had a heart attack," I mumble.

Colby rubs his jaw, "Fuck..." He then turns back to the woman, "One bed please."

She nods and does some typing into her computer.

"How do you know?" Colby whispers.

"Kai just texted me! Whoever hit Sam is going to get it!" I whisper yell, a tear rolls down my cheek.

Colby pulls me into a hug and I wrap my arms around his waist tightly.

The woman holds out a key card and pamphlet, "Here's your receipt, essentials, directions and key card. You room is on the fourth floor, number 410. Enjoy your stay!"

"Thanks," We say, and Colby takes the items. He holds my hand as we go into the elevator.

"So, what's Kai saying now?" Colby asks.

"I didn't reply yet, I'm so shocked that I don't know what to say," I whisper with sadness.

"Tell him we're in Cambria, coming to visit in less than an hour or so," Colby says.

"O-okay," I shake, trying to text him.

A: thanks for the update. Colby and I are coming in an hour:((

A: Means alot that a close friend is watching him xx

K: I owe it to you Ash, again I'm sorry for what happened. Im here always. Im so sorry for sam's accident<3

I smile, he's just really being supportive for Sam. I'm not worthy of such a kind person in my life. How sweet he is for helping Sam get better.

A: Thank you love. cu in 1 hr x

I put my phone in my back pocket as the elevator dings and the doors open. Colby and I step out and find our room, 410.

He swipes the card and opens our room door. It was nice and clean, and just classy as hell.

Colby drops everything and slams face first into the freshly made bed.

I laugh and jump over him and bounce on the bed.

"Yo, don't jump on my face!" He exclaims.

"Calm yo tits, I won't. It's not the plan," I smirk.

"I don't have any tits, perv," Colby groans.

"Have you checked your pecks lately?" I laugh. However, Colby's fucking perfect, I'm just messing with the fucker.

He touches his chest and feels them awkwardly. Someone's self conscious, awe.

He shakes his head, "Don't you have a video to be uploading?" He reminds me.

I stop jumping and hop off the bed, I boop his nose, "Oh smarty pants, you are right."

/////

I just uploaded the video and I was just about ready to bolt over to the hospital. We could be there by five-thirty! Much earlier than we expected.

"Dude, let's go! You uploaded, we can leave!" Colby exclaims jumping on the area near my feet.

"Don't you dare crush my toes," I warn, smacking Colby's leg that was in my face.

"Ow, okay."

After answering a few comments, I shut off my laptop and crawl out of bed.

We turn off all our lights and leave to the hospital. We drive in silence.

Probably too many thoughts were circling our minds.

Sam's alive, and that's all that matters.

We have to make sure we can believe the text.

And let's not forget Ellie, who has been there for him through it all. I wonder how she must've been feeling when Sam had that heart attack...

Poor El, I wish I was with her.

Imagine Ellie was you and Sam was your beloved mother or father.

Fuck, I really can't.

I love my parents too much to think that they almost died.

Now that I think about it, does Sam's parents know what the hell is going on?

Did we contact them, even?

"Colby! Does Mr. and Mrs. Golbach know Sam's terribly injured?"

Colby's eyes go wide, "Um. I don't think so..."

"You need to call them when we get there! PRONTO! They haven't reconciled that their son almost died!" I exclaim.

If my child was with his or her friends and they got hurt, almost died, and I didn't know, I would be fucking pissed off and sad as hell.

"Okay, I will, geez," Colby replies.

Soon, we park and walk inside.

I run straight to the front desk and ask the nurse for Samuel Golbach.

"And you both are?" She questions with suspicion.

"Colby Brock and Ashlyn Neil," Colby says in a duh tone.

"No, what are you to Mr. Golbach?" The nurse retaliates, like Colby's an idiot.

"Uhhh," I murmur.

Then, an arm gets wrapped around my and Colby's shoulders.

"They're cousins, Miss Poala."

"Ah, okay," The nurse responds sweetly.

I turn and see Ellie, tired out of her mind, and straight up looking weak as hell.

"El!" I exclaim, hugging her tightly.

"Oh, thank god you guys are here," Ellie sighs, embracing me.

I let go and she hugs Colby. Colby kisses the top of her head, "Baby, are you okay? We were worried. Did you eat, you look pale!"

Ellie smiles, "I'm okay now, and I guess I should eat. But I must take you guys to see Sam, first."

"Please!" Colby grins.

Colby and Ellie hold hands as she leads us down the hall into Sam's room.

He was asleep peacefully, and all you could hear was the beeping of his heart rate monitor.

"Oh my damn," I whisper.

It hurts me to see Sam like this.

His leg in a white cast, and elevated by a sling.

His head wrapped in white gauge and bandages.

His face covered in bruises and scars.

Him, sleeping there, just fucking kills me.

I can't help but to want his injuries so he doesn't have to have them.

It'd just be easier if Ashlyn Neil wasn't around, ya know?

No drama for everyone, no heartbreaks for anyone, nothing.

We hear a knock on the door and I spot a familiar face.

Kai Brooks.

I rush to give him a big hug.

He hugs, back, but I can feel his body tense up at my touch.

Another weird thing.

"Hi, Ashlyn," He mumbles.

He waves to Colby and Ellie.

"Hey, thanks so much for taking care of him," I smile.

"Yeah, thanks dude," Colby adds.

Ellie comes to stand by me and grins, "If it wasn't for Kai, Sam wouldn't still be breathing."

"Really?" I gape, "Kai, my god we owe you!"

"Yeah, man you're a life saver. Literally," Colby smiles.

Kai shifts awkwardly, "Guys... it's really, uh no big deal." He manages a flashy smile.

Ellie laughs, "Shut up and take our gratitude, you fucking saved our best friend! You're amazing, unlike the guy who hit him."

Kai begins to speak. He mumbles,"Yeah, okay, thanks, um I'm going to go now, my attendee is paging me so uh-"

"Look! Sam's waking up!" Colby exclaims, pointing to him and running by his side.

I couldn't believe it! Sam was waking up! He's better than stable then, and that's the strong person I know Sam is.

Ellie and I push over to get on the empty side of Sam's bed.

I drag Kai, so he can see how great he's doing.

"H-hi guys, what's going on?" Sam sleepily murmurs. "Ow, my head hurts."

We laugh. Colby says,  "It's good to see you, man. We thought we lost you."

"You guys can't lose me that easily," Sam smiles. "So what has happened to me?"

"You broke a few limbs and have bruises and cuts... had a heartattack, almost died from having your coronary artery clogged, ya know..." I say, laughing when it really wasn't funny.

"WHAT? Am I okay?" Sam exclaims.

"I don't know, ask yourself," Ellie giggles.

"I mean, I feel fine..." Sam grazes his hands frantically all over his body to make sure his limbs were still in tact, "What are my doctor's saying?"

"Here's Doctor Brooks," I smile, shoving Kai in the conversation.

He doesn't make any eye contact but softly says with his hands folded behind his back, "You're stable, but knowing that you're awake, you should be perfectly fine. At this rate, you may leave the hospital by the end of this week."

"That's great! You can come home," Colby grins, squeezing Sam's shoulder.

"Heck yeah, sounds good. Thanks dude!" Sam smiles widely.

It made me happy knowing Sam was doing amazing. He's well, perfectly alive, and not dead!

"No problem, if you have any questions, just ask your main doctor. Doctor Burke. I'm not your doctor here..." Kai trails.

"Kai! When Sam had the heartattack, you were the first one here and helped him through it! You were amazing! You're as important as his doctor as you are to Doctor Burke! You could've just let him have the heartattack, but you didn't and you revived his ass! Not the other doctor. How many times do we have to tell you that you're a life saver?" Ellie exclaims.

Sam gasps, "You're the one who saved me? Dude, I am forever grateful! You prevented me from death, and that's the biggest gift ever."

"I was just doing my job, and if anything, you should still just thank Doctor Burke," Kai nods. He then exits the room in a very formal manner.

It was so unlike him to be acting all stiff.

"He's a great guy, Ash, but what's his deal? Can't take a compliment?" Colby asks.

"I have no idea..."

/////

We're all laughing at the pointless jokes Colby was cracking and re-telling Sam of our crazy times. We wracked our brains for him.

"You guys are the best friends a guy can have... as cliche and cringey that sounds, it's true," Sam beams.

"We're just glad you're not dead, buddy," Colby chuckles.

"Oh, dude have you called up his parents?" I ask Colby.

"Shit, no. I forgot," He mumbles.

"Nobody called my parents? Oh god," Sam face-palms.

"I'll go do that now..." Colby mumbles, pulling out his phone.

I turn to Ellie, "Girl, have you eaten?"

"No, but I'll eat soon!" She says.

"Don't be stupid, we're going to the cafeteria now. I'll buy you food, don't worry," I smile, dragging her out the door.

"Yo, can you bring me back a pudding cup?" Sam calls out.

"Got it!" I holler, and we go down the hall to the cafeteria.

All we had to do is follow the signs. No problem.

We get into the cafeteria. Ellie goes and buys a sandwich while I buy some mac n' cheese.

"So, how has hospital life been treating ya? How'd you survive by yourself?" I ask Ellie as we sit down at an empty table.

She sighs, taking a bite out of her sandwich. "It's been tough... Being alone kinda makes you think, really. And with Sam, who had still not waken up from his surgery, was scary as fuck. I read in an article that there was a percentage, it was low, but there was a percentage of people who have died from the anesthesia. Ya know that gas thing they put patient's under before surgery."

"El, I don't ever want to think about death. Just tell me, what got you through this mess? You had nobody to talk to," I say.

She points at me with her bread, mid-chew, "Well ya see, I had some nurses who came by and noticed I was alone. I got to know some of them who had night shifts. Including Miss Poala, the woman at the front desk who was being all crabby to Colby," She laughs. "Miss Poala works from eight p.m to three a.m. and she helped me fall asleep, talked to me, cheered me up when Sam had the heartattack... oh god. That was the worst hour of my life." She begins to shed a few tears.

I pat her shoulder, "Hey girl, he's awake and alive now. No need to cry," I pout. "El, you're so strong for being here for him, everyone envies and loves you so much for your kindness."

"Ugh, Ash, I missed you last night. I can't believe I survived a week without you that last month," She giggles.

"Oh, was this Sam's first time waking up at all?" I ask.

"Yeah, I was just as surprised as you when he fluttered those eyes open," Ellie giggles.

I grin, "Damn, Colby and I must've been some good luck charm or whatever."

"Yeah sure, walk into the next dying patient's room and sooner or later their cancer will be cured when you and Colby walk in," El teases.

"Yo, what if that was true?" I joke.

"Dude, you'd be paid millions and millions of dollars. You guys wouldn't have to ever upload another video to YouTube again. You'll be miracle workers!"

"Haha, imagine a life like that," I ponder.

"And you'll still be famous because everyone will think you're descendants from god or some other religious shit," Ellie grins.

We laugh.

"Hey, don't joke about god. He's our SAVIOR," A random woman says, walking by our table.

What the fuck, we ain't hating on no religion, geebus.

Lady, you can believe anything you want. Go for it.

Believe in ducks for all I care.

I'm an atheist or I just believe in Karma. I don't know still.

Ellie and I stare at each other, trying not to burst out laughing again.

Our bad.

"How was Kai yesterday? How long has he been working here for?" I ask.

"Uh, I hadn't seen him leave, and I was sitting in the lobby like the whole time, so..." Ellie remembers.

"Huh, damn he's been working all day? No wonder why he's been so off. He's tired as hell! I should thank him later for all his effort and care put into Sam," I grin.

Ellie nods, "Same. Ya know, they let me see Sam after his surgery?"

"They did? What'd he look like?"

"Just, battered, and bashed, and just awful. It hurt me seeing him like that. They allowed me to see him like, around nine. I sat in the room with him, watching him, for an hour. It broke my heart. I- I've never felt so close to someone like that, even though he was unconscious. I've never really realized how important Sam was to me until these past three days."

Ellie contemplates, taking another bite of her sandwich. "But anyway, they let me see Sam and after that hour, I heard the heart rate monitor going crazy with beeps! Sam was just shaking so violently, the first thought I had was that he was having a seizure or something. I stood, panicked for seconds that were way too long. Then, Kai dashed in and told me to get more help as he worked and helped tend Sam. He was great."

"We're so lucky to have Kai. Thank god he was here, all night for that fact," I laugh.

"Okay, enough about that. What'd you and Colby do all day before driving four hours to come see us?" Ellie raises an eyebrow and glares at me with an intrigued expression.

I shrug, "Really nothing..." I lie. "We got home after dropping off Brennen and Nik, and then went straight to bed."

"Ahuh, well you had to of communicated to have gotten here. What happened before you came today?"

"Well, he knocked on my door and asked if I had food because he hadn't bought any," I lie again. "So I made him breakfast while watching The Flash. Later he took me out for Krispy Kreme as a thank you. After, we decided, hey we gotta see Ellie and Sam because they're the best out of everyone in the world!"

Ellie flips her hair, "Yeah we are."

I chuckle, "And so we got packed quickly and since I didn't make a Youtube vid, we filmed in the car as he drove. I edited it in the car, posted it when we got to the hotel, and then came here."

"Nice," El grins. "I'll watch your guys' vid later."

"Cool, we uh, got only one bed tonight and you are not sleeping in this hospital alone, so you and Colby are taking the bed and I'll just sleep on the pull out couch or whatever."

"Sounds good," She cheerily agrees.

"Okay, think it's time to head back?" I ask.

"Sure, we left the guys too long, who knows what they're talking about," Ellie jokes.

We then pick up our food scraps and such and throw them out.

As we're about to exit the cafeteria's doors, I remember that I have to get Sam a pudding cup!

"Yo, I forgot to get Sam his pudding cup! You go ahead, I'll catch up in a second," I smile, running to the desert area.

"Okay!" Ellie hollers behind, pushing the doors open and leaving.

All by myself, cue the music, I grab a chocolate pudding cup from the open displayed refrigerator like, thing. I have no idea what to call it. It was right near a window that lead to another room. That window was open. I couldn't help but to peak through the window.

I'm a real snoop, I know. Hehe.

I spot Kai, talking to one of his fellow medical student friends.

I was about to say 'HEY BUD!' through the window until I heard what he was saying.

"I can't help but feel guilty, dude. They're saying all this nice shit about me when I was the one who put that guy in the leg brace, head bandages, bruises and scars. Damn, I didn't mean to do any of that, but I can't help to think what Ashlyn will think of me. That guy is one of her best friends..."

The other person says, "Chill, you fucking revived that guy, they wouldn't care that you hit him."

"But if it weren't for me, he wouldn't be here. Bro, I should've stayed and see if he was actually okay instead of sped off to get here," Kai exclaims.

"People do that all the time, you had priorities, it's understood. Look, if I was you, just shut the hell up,"

"Ya, sure?"

"Yeah, totally. No damage done," His friend insists.

"Okay."

I step away from the glass frame there and slide down on the wall below the window with Sam's pudding cup in hand.

Sam wouldn't be getting this pudding cup from a hospital if it weren't for Kai Brooks.

I tug my knees into my chest and bury my face into my own darkness.

No way.

You're dreaming.

Kai Brooks?

No.

He wouldn't ever.

No.

He's a nice guy, the sweetest! Saved Sam from a heart-attack.

He's a good person.

That couldn't be false. It was the truth.

Right?

I felt the hot tears stinging my lids, just begging to escape.

Did he- did Kai just-

Kai Brooks almost killed Sam Golbach.

Why must my life just suck.

No way in hell am I letting Kai ever touch Sam again. Yeah, he's a savior to Sam.

But he wouldn't be a savior if it weren't for his dumb, late, ass who hit Sam in the first place!

Suddenly, I hear a girl's piercing scream.

Ellie's piercing scream.

I stand up, grab the pudding cup, and peer through the window where Kai was.

Kai mumbles 'shit' under his breath and barges out the door.

I race out the doors of the cafeteria and I sprint to Sam's room.

I see Sam, puking.

Puking blood.

All over the floor, all over everything.

All over Colby and Ellie.

They are huddled in the corner. Ellie's face buried into Colby's chest. Nurses swarm and who I presume is Doctor Burke is tending to Sam's limp body.

I hear rushing footsteps down the hall and it was Kai, moving people out the way and trying to step into the room.

No.

"DON'T TOUCH HIM!" I scream at him.

Everyone in the room turns to look at me.

Doctor Burke says, "Miss, I am the doctor here to help your friend, I must be here to save him."

"Not you," I mumble, "HIM!" I point directly at Kai. Kai looks over his shoulder and stares at me, but I burn his stares with my own stares. I want to get deep into his soul and make him pay.

Miss Poala, one of the nurses in the room turns to Kai and asks me, "Uh, why Doctor Brooks?"

"He's the one who hit Samuel Golbach," I state.

"He's the one who crashed his car into Sam.

He is the one who almost killed my best friend."

Ya know, I hate liking my rival.

But this time,

I just hate Kai Brooks.
