Chapter Five
MAY
I roll my neck from left and right to ease the stramineous tension from constantly staring at my laptop and discarded notes laying around my bed as I work on one of my many assignments.
I crack a yawn from the depths of my soul and blinked a couple of times to check the time. It was only 11:30pm, and I was nearly halfway finished with my assignment, and if I was going to pull an all-nighter, then I was going to need some caffeinated fuel.
Shrugging on my jacket, I turned to my dormmate, who I thought was so engrossed in whatever lousy reality show she was watching to notice me leaving suddenly sits up.
"Where are you going this late in the evening, young lady." Lexi playfully wiggles her brows as she shuts her laptop and puts it on one side. "Visiting a certain male suiter, perhaps?"
I roll my eyes, "firstly, I'm a year older than you 'young lady'." I laugh when she rolls her green eyes, "secondly, do I look like I'm dressed to go hook up with a guy?" I say and gestures to my old, faded navy hoodie and boy-shorts, and the bird's nest on my head some call hair.
She looks me up and down and casually shrugs as she says, "Guys like the homeless man look these days."
I chuck my pillow at her as she throws her head back in laughter.
"No, but seriously, where are we going." She includes herself once she gets dressed and joins me in the hall a few minutes later.
I sigh, "I'm going to look for my will to live."
She hums in understanding and then links her arm through mine as we take the stairs, "to the Café Hut it is."
***
Café Hut was a 24/7 pastry/coffee shop right across our dorm buildings and is known for having late night student customers. The moment we step foot into the Café the girl behind the counter sends us a quick little wave before tending to her customer. The cozy cafe was surprisingly not as full as it normally is this hour. Must be because of the warm humid air inside when it was already such a warm summer evening.
"It's like stepping into a sauna from hell." Lexi huffs out.
I point to the sign plastered on the glass window, "Aircon is broken."
"You're buying, right?" Lexi nudges my shoulder and flashes me an innocent smile, "I forgot my wallet at the dorm, but I'll pay you back. Love you!" She rushes out before scurrying to the table by the window.
For someone who was born with a silver spoon in her mouth and probably shat gold as a baby, Alexis LeRoux was annoyingly humble and never went out of her way to flash and flaunt her old money family name like other snobs.
I make my way to the counter and stand in line, taking out my phone when I feel it buzz against my ass,
Carmen
I need strong alcohol, dick, pussy, a movie night and blueberry ice cream. In that exact order.
Me
What did he do now?
Carmen's boss is the living and breathing definition of horrible. And many of Extrava -the popular local fashion company- ex employees have said on numerous occasions how hard it was working for the Dutch Francisco de Klerk. But the upside to working with asshole was being a paid intern and get better work experience for any fashion designer major future career.
And my dear best friend just happens to be one of his interns this semester.
Carmen
He wants me to tear up the dress I worked on for 16 hours a week. :(
That rat looking son of a bitch...
I'm so engrossed in furiously typing a response that I almost don't notice some guy cutting in right in front of me when I was clearly called up next.
"Hey Kade, long time no see." The waitress greets in a low flirtatious tone that made me cringe.
"Hey Kaylee. Can I have an ice Americano, please?"
I gape in exasperation at the rudeness of it all. "Um, excuse me, you can't just cut in." I jab a finger on his hard shoulder. Kade dryly glances over his annoyingly board shoulder at me as he leans his forearms against the counter.
"Not my fault you too busy typing away an empty threat about a guy named Francis?" He casually shrugs his shoulders and turns back to flirting with the barista.
This guy was unbelievable. "You read my texts?" I move between him and the pretty barista to glare at him. Not giving a damn if I interrupted their little moment.
Again, with his stupid shrug, "It looked interesting. Also, I was curious about Carmen. It's been a while since I've seen her." He smirks, "She single?" He asks not even minutes after he flirted with someone else.
I plaster a sweet smile on my face, "and it seems to me that it's been a while since someone punched you in the face." I don't bother waiting for his reaction as I turned and place my and Lexi's orders.
"Two orders huh? Coffee date?" He asks then lets his eyes roam up and down, "interesting choice of date wear Willson."
"Remember when I asked for your opinion? Me either." I retort dryly.
He lets out a scoff and hangs his head before leaning back against the counter, arms crossed over his chest. "How's the thumb?"
I smile again and mock his pose by crossing my own arms, "How's the nose?"
"Oh, it's good, since it wasn't broken. Not like how you broke your thumb."
I scoff and roll my eyes, "I broke your nose Brown. Just admit it already."
Kade shakes his head, "There's nothing to admit when it's not true." He retorts and starts to walk towards the collection counter, and I follow. "Also, how do you break your own thumb punching someone?" He scrunched his face in confusion. "It's general knowledge to know that you can't hold your thumb when you're going for a swing at someone." He then demonstrates how to hold a fist when punching someone.
I hate how my neck heated with embarrassment, "Well, I didn't exactly have time to go over the basic step by step instructions on how to hold your fist when you punch someone." I'm practically seething at this point.
"Chill there, Mayo. It looks like you wanna go for round two." He raises a brow at my clenched fist by my side.
"Stop calling me that." I snap at the sound of that stupid nickname fall from his mouth.
"No can do Mayo." He shrugs and grins as if to tell me his never going to let it go.
"Real mature, Kayden." This time I get to grin at the sight of seeing his drop and replaced by a clenched jaw.
Thankfully before he could say anything the barista gives us our beverages and I can't help but childishly stick my tongue out at him before almost skipping my way over to Lexi whose eyes couldn't stop bouncing back and forth from me and where Kade probably still was.
"Here ya go." I say, placing her drink in front of her as I take my seat. "You're buying us food tomorrow."
"Bitch. Spill. Now." Lexi's eyes neatly bulge out of her head as she takes a sip of her drink.
I try to ignore her and look out the window, "do you think it'll rain tomorrow because I was kinda hopping I could start the interviews out-"
"May! A.ah no. You're not going to not tell me what I just witnessed with my very two eyes." She frantically points at her eyes for dramatic emphasis. "You were talking to a hot guy."
Sighing as I take a sip at my coffee and glance around to make sure he wasn't close enough for me to talk about him. Not that I wouldn't be telling Lexi what I haven't told him in front of his face before.
"He's on the ice hockey team."
"And..." She motions me to continue. Sighing, I think of all the crap Kade puts me through and how I can't recall us ever having a single decent conversation between us. Ever since we were kids our families and friends thought that we'd grow out of our pranking and childish fights, but we just grew up and those pranks turned into humiliating each other whenever the opportunity was there to none stop bickering and annoying the shit out of each other for the fuck of it.
"He's a pain in my thumb."
