Chapter 6
Joseph's POV
Kris was acting strange. Like, he was a weird kid, and it was adorable, but he was acting really weird lately. It was unnatural. I tried talking to him, but he either ignored me or talked to me as little as possible. I asked Xavier about it. "He's not talking to me either. What do you think is up with him?" he asked back. I leaned on his shoulder. "I have no idea." He put his arm around my torso and kissed the top of my head.
I figured I'd catch Kris after school. Just as I had thought, he was outside, sitting on the bench behind the gym after the last bell rang. "Hey," I said. He didn't say anything. "Kris, what's wrong? You haven't answered my texts, you've been plain ignoring Xavier and me. Is something going on?" I asked, taking his hand. He didn't take it back, but he still didn't speak. He rested his head on my chest. "Everything's going downhill," Kris mumbled into my shirt. He hugged me tightly and said, "My sister isn't going to be around us anymore. At all. She's abandoning the group for good," his brows furrowing as if he was just hearing the information himself. "Why not?" I asked. He shrunk lower. "I don't want to talk about it," he said.
I stood up, letting Kris's arms fall away from me. "Okay, let's go then," I reached out a hand and he took it. We both looked at each other for a second too long before something needed to fill the empty space. Kris leaned in and kissed me to fill said space. I felt my brain go numb, the only thing in there was "Kris is kissing me Kris is kissing me Kris is kissing me" and I felt like it was the best moment of my life as I kissed him in return. "That was my first kiss. My first real kiss," I confessed as soon as he pulled back. His eyes widened. "No way it was."
"It was."
"You didn't kiss like it was your first."
"I'm full of surprises, I guess," I said, smiling at him. He smiled back, the first real smile I'd seen from him in a while. I decided I would both kill and die for that smile.
Later that day, I called Xavier to let him know Kris was our fully functioning boyfriend again. Kris promised us he'd make up for not showing up at the park. "No, it's fine, babe-" Xavier started. "Even if it was fine, which it's not, I still want to be around you two," Kris responded, "So how about a movie? Just us three?" he asked.
After watching a movie together, we all spent some time at the park. Xavier got us ice cream and we all sat on a bench with my legs on Xavier's lap and Kris's legs on top of mine. We didn't say a lot, but it was understood between the three of us that there wasn't anything to say.
