Twenty Three
For the first time I was not tormented by my memories. I was drifted off into a peaceful slumber dreaming of nothing but a dark abyss. When I awoke only a few hours later I felt regenerated.
I don't think I slept that well in the past few weeks. It was nice. However, I wasn't sure I could say the same about Levi and I.
No matter the amount of comfort he provided me the night before, our usual bickering returns. But this time it was with more bitterness, each insult he would throw was like ice pricking my skin. I didn't mind though. I gladly throw my own insults back at him making sure each one was a hit.
"Damn you! You know that bread was for me!"
"Shut up! Your name wasn't on it, pig!" Levi yells in hot anger.
"So what? I'm the one who's hungry!"
"You brat! I'm a higher rank than you!"
"What's that got to do with anything?" I exasperate with my eyes wide in irritation. "What's the point of you eating anyway? You already look like a corpse!"
I could tell I landed a hit. I watch the way Levi's eyes widen in surprise before narrowing with his lips curled into a snarl.
"I'm going to turn your body into a corpse if you don't shut that mouth of yours, Lieutenant."
I smirk deviously, underneath that cool exterior he was a loose cannon like any other twenty-year-old guy. Insults weren't something he enjoyed taking. But I sure as hell enjoyed giving them to him.
I place my metal mug on the desk with a thud. I take a step towards Levi who sat on his bed. Bread in one hand and a mug in the other.
His glare sends daggers into my core but to my surprise it doesn't bother me. Instead, my smirk widens in challenge. I lean down with my hands placed on the sides of my hips.
"I like to see you try, Captain," I drawl. "After all, I think I have the upper hand."
Levi slightly cranes his head upwards, it amused me knowing he had to look up to meet my playful gaze.
"Oh? And what makes you so confident, Emma?" His warm breath fans over my face sending an electrifying sensation all over my body.
The way my name falls out of his lips was just breathtaking. My insides twist and turn, my heart racing tremendously inside of me. My previous playfulness disperses twisting into balled up fury.
This was so damn annoying. Why do I have to suffer over the way he simply says my name? It just pisses me off more knowing I was letting him get to me. My nose scrunches as I hook my fingers underneath his cravat. I pull him close, my nose accidentally brushing against his.
"The fact you're pissing me off," I growl lowly. "Is giving me the urge to slap that arrogant smirk off your face."
Despite my threat I watch Levi's lips spread into a devilish smirk before turning it into a frown. "You're acting real bratty, you know that?" He says just as lowly. My heart jolts into my throat at the sound of his husky voice.
"Just because you couldn't have your way you decide to throw a tantrum just like a spoiled child. Didn't your parents teach you any manners?"
"Tch, I don't need them teaching me shit."
"Then shall I whip some sense into you?"
Somehow my body began to drown in hotness. I couldn't understand the immediate sweat that formed over my forehead or the lack of breathing. I felt as though as I was going crazy.
My body couldn't take this anymore. I push him roughly to the bed. He drops his bread and cup in the process.
"Shut up," I snap. I tower over Levi, it was amazing to feel such dominance over him. He glowers up at me with such intimidation.
"Did you just push me?" He questions in such awe. I was sure he disliked the action. I huff in response, my chin held high while I glare down at him.
"Don't ever look down on me. I'm not some thug."
"Tch, you act like one." His glare holds mine. Nothing was friendly about it and I never expected anything less from him.
That brought my temper to a boil. It surges through me so hotly I was sure my skin would melt. I would make it my goal to show him who really was the thug here.
"Am I interrupting something?"
A curious voice breaks us out of our nasty gaze and causing me to flinch at the sound of another person. It's been awhile since I heard anyone else's voice besides Levi's. We both turn to the cell door to see Hanji standing in the hall.
Awkwardly she puts up a hand and waves with a strained smile. "I never thought you two would get along this well."
I cock my head, I wasn't sure why she said it like that. I watch her gaze drift down to my left side, I follow it. Levi was laid atop the bed, elbows supporting him and with his shirt disheveled and cravat undone around his neck.
Strands of his hair were tousled over his forehead from the rough push I gave. I wasn't bothered by his looks but what bothered me was the position we were placed in. I hadn't realized I stood between his legs with a hand on my hip and one reached out to grab him once more.
From Hanji's perspective it was something you wished you hadn't walked in upon and something you would indeed use as ammunition for endless teasing. Noticing her sneaky grin I blush madly in embarrassment. I roughly kick Levi's shin in response to that.
"It's not what you think!" I shout hastily while listening Levi's pained curses.
"What the actual hell?!" He yells. I take a huge step back without sparing him a glance.
"I was about to teach him a lesson, that's all." I attempted to create a calm facade but feared that I failed hopelessly.
My mind was screaming endless curses while my blush fails me miserably as I feel it turn into a hot scarlet tint. I couldn't find it in me to take my eyes off Hanji. Not only have I not spoke or seen her in weeks but she now thinks Levi and I were doing something.
I hope she knows it was wrong through the look I gave. Unfortunately, she didn't. Whistling in surprise she grasps an iron bar.
"Well, I'm not sure what to do now," she muses. "Here I am, ordered to get you two for Erwin but seeing as things are progressing splendidly between you two, I'm not sure if I should give you extra time or. . ."
"It's not what you think!" Levi and I had shouted that in sync, placing much truthfulness into those words.
Levi stands besides me and I wish he hadn't. It only made my skin prick and my shoulders tense. I awkwardly take a step away.
"Keep spouting nonsense and I'll poke your eyes out, Hanji," Levi threatens darkly.
She took it as a joke and bellows a laugh. "I'm finally getting you out of this cell and that's the thanks I get?"
"I got a better threat on your life if that wasn't enough," I grumble. I wasn't in the mood to deal with her teasing.
If we were to leave then she should get a move on. Hanji gives me a playful pout instead while muttering to herself. She places the key into the keyhole and finally opens the door.
"You know, you two are starting to sound exactly alike."
I wasn't sure why she found that quite amusing.

It was nice to see the sky and feel the warmth of the sun again. I missed the fresh air and deemed a farewell to the cell. Despite my overly relief to be above ground my hands tremble by my sides.
Erwin had made an order to see Levi and I. I asked Hanji for more information but she waves off my demands. She claims she wasn't sure why he wanted to see us.
I know all too well she was lying. As annoyed as I was by her I kept a tight leash on my temper. I would save it for Erwin.
I fixed my appearance the best I could in the short time I had during our walk. My hair was out of its usual ponytail and bounced over my back as I walked. Levi had also fixed himself making himself more presentable than I was.
I took a chance and glance to my right. When I see Levi run a hand through his hair my breath suddenly hitches in my throat. He catches my stare that I almost jump out of my skin.
I forcefully turn away. I couldn't ignore the awkwardness that lingered between us. I thought my heart would explode from the harsh pounding it did against my chest.
I couldn't seem to get him out of my head. It angered me, he was making my body suffer. No matter what I did to push him away he would always find a way back.
I couldn't understand it. I couldn't understand the hot anger bubbling inside me along with this giddy, butterfly feeling. Was this a new way he created to annoy me?
Finally reaching Erwin's office Hanji pushes the door open and strides in. "Here they are, Commander!" She chirps rather cheerfully.
Ignoring her I waltz towards the desk before me. Erwin sits behind his desk with eyes of steel upon me. Hands clasped atop the desk he inspects Levi and I without a hint of emotion on his face. I stare back while straightening my spine.
"It's been a while you two," he finally says in a way of greeting. "Was it two or three weeks when I last saw you?"
I don't answer, it only makes Erwin huff with a small smirk. His chair pushes back as he stands before he turns to face the window behind him.
"After your little incident during the mission I was considering discharging you both from the Survey Corps."
Anger instantly ripples through me as my eyes widen in fear. He can't discharge me! I'm the best he's got! That's like committing suicide! I slam my hands atop his desk with teeth bared like an animal.
"You can't discharge me! I'm the brains of this regiment! Without me you all would be in hell!" I yell while narrowing my eyes into daggers. "I won't go! No matter what you or anyone says I'm staying in the Survey Corps!"
Levi doesn't yell like me, I only heard him huff in disapproval. I can only imagine him crossing his arms.
"You really want to go through with that, Erwin?" He questions. "I'm your so called Humanity's Strongest. Discharging me is like taking the strongest wolf out of the pack. The regiment won't survive or win."
I had to agree, Levi is the only one in Scout Regiment history to have the highest solo kills. And he's the strongest I've seen. With him and I gone, everything Erwin has built and the people's lives he sacrificed would be for nothing.
Erwin doesn't answer but simply chuckles in amusement. I glance over my shoulder to share a confusing gaze with the Captain.
"If you two had let me finish," I hear him sigh. "Then I would've said I've decided against it." He turns around with a small smirk and amusement in his eyes. "But your passion to continue in the Survey Corps was quite intriguing. I liked it."
A crimson blush coats my cheeks, damn my temper. I push away from his desk and cross my arms. "Could've said that first," I mutter awkwardly.
"Hm, I could've but I wouldn't be able to hear that little speech of yours. Now would I?"
I hear Levi mutter the word, arrogant eyebrows, and couldn't help but snicker at Erwin's nickname. He seemed surprised by our cool behavior, I raise a brow as if taunting him to question us.
Erwin takes notice with a frown plastered on his lips. But he quickly clears his throat to keep composer and looks away.
"But keeping you two also means the danger you put us in." He shakes his head with hands behind his back. "I will not go through that again. You two must work together whether you like it or not. So, I created a plan."
Seeing that victorious gleam in his eyes only made my insides queasy. I narrow my eyes suspiciously at the Commander.
"Tch, why do I got a feeling it's some sadistic plan?"
"I wouldn't called it sadistic," Erwin snickers. "More like bonding exercises if you will."
