Thirty Three
Why did everything hurt? And why did it feel like my head was about to explode?
I groan in displeasure and turn onto my stomach. I bury my head into my pillow in hopes of drowning out the pain but, it only made things worse.
"Fuuck."
Twisting my head to my side it took much needed effort to open my eyes. The task itself was taxing and made everything hurt twice as more. I found myself lazily staring at a crème-colored wall and dark wooden floors.
The window before me was open allowing the sunlight to be casted inside. I hissed at the brightness and turn away. I was on my bed, that much I knew.
I stare at the tousled white sheets and pillows. I realized I was not covered in them as they were kicked to the right side of the bed. When I smacked my mouth all I could taste was bitterness and the smell a foul of alcohol crinkled my nose.
God, how much did I drink? With much effort I rose to a sitting position. I take a good look around the room.
The bed was a mess, I figured it was the way I was sprawled upon it. I grazed my eyes to the right side of the bed. On the floor there lay my knee high boots.
They were placed neatly by the foot of the bed. I quirk a brow, I don't remember placing them there. On top of that, I don't even remember coming home.
The memories of last night were hazy and when I try to remember it just made everything hurt even more. A loud clanking sound interrupts my thoughts and I cringe at the pounding response my head gave.
"The hell?" I stare at door in confusion. Was I not alone? I linger on the bed for a moment before stumbling towards the door.
I wasn't sure what to expect, or who to expect. Slowly, I twist the knob and push the door. Everything was so bright, it hurt my eyes.
I squinted them and groan at the aching pain. I even could feel a small breeze coming from the windows on my right.
"So, you're finally up? Took you long enough, brat."
Hearing that deep, scolding voice brought a cool chill down my spine. I knew all too well who it was and yet, I didn't want to know. With my vision finally adjusting I see a short man standing in the kitchen.
He was pouring something into a cup. He wore his uniform but discarded the leather jacket. I swallow thickly with one thing ringing in my mind; why was he here?
Levi finally puts down the kettle and looks at me. His hair seemed disheveled and covered a part of his forehead.
"Deemed it wise to sleep till two in the afternoon after the fun you had last night?"
I couldn't understand his words, they jumbled all the thoughts inside me. It even brought dread to my core.
"Wha-what are you talking about?" My voice was hoarse like I screamed a lot. Even my throat felt dry.
Grabbing a cup he crosses his arm underneath the other while leaning against the counter. I wasn't sure what he was implying. I guessed my puzzled state amused him. He gestures his cup to me with a smirk slowly taking over his lips.
"I suggest you cover yourself," he suggests. "I'm in no mood to stare at your body today."
Confused, my eyes immediately dart down to my body. I gasp in horror at the sight. Thankfully I still had my pants on but my upper body was exposed.
My shirt was unbuttoned completely allowing Levi to stare at me with his heart's content. It brought a sickening feeling to my stomach.
"I'm surprised a woman like you wears lacy undergarments," I hear him muse. I violently turn around and frantically button up the shirt. Embarrassment starts to drown me making me wish I could find some hole to die in.
"P-pervert!" I shout angrily. "Why were you staring?!"
I glance over my shoulder as I muster any amount of strength I had to glare threateningly at him. To my surprise, he only smirks. He was enjoying this.
"First of all, I never wanted to see you without a shirt," he states with a small gleam. "Second, you're the one who started it."
"Started what exactly?"
"Oh? You don't remember?" He feigns concern, raising a brow with a small frown. It boiled my blood.
"Don't be a smart ass." I snap. "I'm obviously asking because I don't remember anything. And shouldn't you be at work?"
Levi waves off my question with a sigh. He takes another sip. "You took up my time."
"Took up your time?? What do you--" A loud gasp abruptly escapes my lips. Everything started to click.
I was half-dressed, Levi's in my apartment and, he says I took up his time. Horror greeted my core leaving me to feel mortified before Levi. However, he seemed unfazed and watches me with a simple stare. If everything added up exactly then that means--
"Wait---did we--did we. . ." I found it hard to ask such a simple question. Those two words were spluttering out of me like that's all I could say.
My face reddens terribly, my eyes becoming bigger than before. Levi simply smirks before gesturing at the table beside me.
"Sit," he instructs. "We need to talk."
Like an obedient dog I do as he says. I pull out a chair and sit. I refused to look his way and set my nervous gaze on the window.
My heart pounded relentlessly inside me while my stomach started to churn. I swallow thickly with my hands trembling.
"So, um, we didn't do it--right?" I finally ask. I listen to Levi make his way to me. He pulls out a chair and sits across.
"What? Have sex?"
"Don't be so blunt about it!" I exasperate with my body burning. How could he be so damn casual?
Hearing that one word come out of his mouth was enough to put me into a flustering mess. He rolls his eyes and pushes a cup of coffee towards me. I eye it in suspicion.
"Relax, nothing happened last night."
It took me a long moment to process his words while I stare blankly at him. I didn't understand. How could we not?
Everything I saw in just these short minutes pointed to that conclusion.
"Huh?"
"You really don't remember." He said it more as a statement than a question. He leans back with arms crossed.
With his cool eyes upon me I felt like I was a criminal than a stupid woman who got drunk. I wish he looked away or at least stop staring at me with such firmness. It did no good on my thunderous heart.
"Just tell me what happened," I mutter. "I can barely remember anything."
Levi doesn't respond immediately and simply releases a soft "Tch". I would be lying if I said that didn't tick me off. But I was in no mood to argue due to the fact my hangover was worse than I can imagine.
"Well," Levi starts finally. "Let's start with what you remember, Emma."
I told him what barely stuck in my head and it seemed what I remembered was a minuscule of the events that occurred last night. He called it pitiful when I could only remember raiding the liquor basement and maybe yelling at someone but don't know who. Levi told me it was him I yelled at before explaining what truly happened.
I cringed tremendously as he spoke. I began to wonder if a person can truly die of embarrassment. I had my face buried in my hands in fear of meeting his cold gaze. I release a muffled scream.
"I can't believe I did that," I whine helplessly. "Why do I get so stupid when I drink??"
"Because you're stupid in general," Levi mutters. "Who raids Erwin's personal stash then makes a bold move on their superior?"
"I'm sorry, okay?!" My hands drag down my face before I stare at Levi with a guilty frown. "I didn't mean to take my shirt off in front of you!"
He becomes unresponsive and takes a sip of his black tea. He only shrugs with a small, hmph. I groan in frustration despite how relieved I was nothing happened.
Still, I was still i had to confirm something. I turn my attention back to Levi who's staring out the window.
"You at least rejected me, right?"
My question lingers between us. I could sense him contemplating on an answer or even if he should even. He fidgets slightly in his chair as though the question bothered him. The mere movement caused my face to pale.
"My god, did you say yes?"
"Of course not, idiot!" Levi booms almost instantly. "You passed out before anything happened!"
I notice how his lips purse together into a small pout while eyebrows furrow together. Even his cheeks were glazed with a bright red tint. I could only stare at him, seeing his flustered face had me doubting his answer.
But I couldn't help but think his reaction was somewhat adorable. Levi suddenly clears his throat. "Anyway, don't bother getting dressed. You're not going to work nor am I."
I raise a brow at this. Does everyone know of my situation? And why the hell is he not going?
"Why?"
"Obviously, you got one hell of a hangover," Levi replies bluntly. "Erwin's giving you today to rest."
"Okay, fine. But what about you? Why aren't you going? And how the hell does he know?"
"You're just bubbling with questions today, aren't you?" I roll my eyes at his sarcasm. Levi only smirks in response before releasing a sigh. "I went there this morning to check up on something."
"Check up on what?"
"None of your damn business, brat."
I frown at his response and cast my gaze down to my cup. I wasn't sure why he got so defensive. It's not like I asked about his personal life.
Awkwardness greets us like a friend and I pretend not to notice it. Even Levi surprisingly does the same. He tries to clear up the air.
"I'm also not going to work because your damn apartment is a mess." He spits in displeasure. My eyes widen and shoot my head up. I was bubbling with confusion.
"Excuse me?" I gape. "Messy how? There's barely anything here!"
"Dust, Emma," Levi sighs as though this was tiring him. He wipes his index finger on my table, picking up grey fluff in the process. "Your place is full of them and I'll be damned to leave a place like this without cleaning it."
The nerve of him. He's only been at my place once and he has the goddamn nerves to say my place is messy. What mess is there to be made if there's barely any furniture?
A little bit of dust means nothing especially when I barely visit this place. I click my tongue in disbelief, isn't he overstaying his time here?
"Look, Levi, I appreciate you watching over me last night but I can handle it from here," I cross my arms and send him a pointed glare. He matches the glare but pulls his lips downwards.
"You're still recovering, Emma. There's no way you can clean all this by yourself."
"Oh, I know. That's why I'm not doing it."
This caused Levi to narrow his glare. He even has the decency to rise from his chair and lean towards me with such intensity.
"I'm cleaning this damn apartment and you got no room to say anything. Who's the one who flashed their bra at me?"
Immediately I tense at his words, my stomach doing some sort of tumble. I narrow my eyes at him. Damn him. The mere fact he aimed for the jugular just so he could clean was truly irritating.
"Fine!" I snap before standing. I felt myself wobble a bit but I manage to keep myself together. "Do whatever the hell you want. But stop bringing that up."
I twist my heel to head back to my room. I was done for today, exhaustion was starting to kick back in. At this point I'll let him do what he wants. There's no use in arguing if he's going to throw those embarrassing moments back at my face.
"Oi, you're forgetting something." I throw my head back like an annoyed child and stop walking. With a loud groan I look back with a deflated expression.
"What now?"
Levi now stood behind the couch with a jacket and cloak in his hand. He gestures them at me. "Your clothes."
My eyes remain in the cloak. I stare at it as thought it was foreign to me. Confused as I was I instantly knew that it wasn't mine. And I gained the urgency to snatch that a way from him.
"Crap." I rush towards him despite the pain and snatch them out of his hands. Levi doesn't seem all that surprised. In fact, he was staring at me in speculation.
"I thought you said you left your cloak in the castle ruins?" He questions curiously.
I nod vigorously, "Yeah! But you know, Hanji found it for me."
What a dumb lie that was. Even I don't believe it. But it'll have to do, I wasn't ready for my ass being kicked.
Levi nods thoughtfully. His eyes were narrowed yet nothing showed upon his face. It only made me feel all the more anxious.
The longer he stared the more I had the urge to scream the truth and throw his damn cloak back at him. However, to my surprise he pokes his inner cheek with his tongue and looks away. "Alright. Take it to your room."
That was his only response before he he stalks back to the table. I took it as a chance to flee. I scamper back to my room and shut the door behind me.
A shaky breath escapes as a wave of relief washes over me. Lying to someone like him wasn't my forte. But I wasn't ready to give back his cloak.
Releasing a frustrated sigh I clench the fabric. I know I'll have to sooner or later though. Oddly enough, that didn't sit well with me.
