One

<Three Years Later>

"There's two on our left and one on our right!" Petra yells aloud. It was near dusk and we were almost at Wall Maria. We figured if we left at this hour no Titans would be at our heels.

It seems were were wrong. We rush through the plains on our horses. Not only the hasty clopping of our horses filled our ears but also the loud stomping of Titans behind us.

"We got to take them out before we reach the wall!" Erwin orders from up front. "Squad Levi you take the ones on the left! Hanji's squad the right!"

I watch everyone steer their horses to their direction before flying up in the sky with their ODM gear. Only Erwin's squad remains in the center as we run forth towards the walls. I was part of his squad, I was the one they relied upon after Erwin when it came to strategy.

Both of us barely get to fight the Titans when we're out on expeditions but when the time came, Erwin was willing to do it. For me, that time was rare itself. No matter how I proclaim this matter to my Commander he would refuse.

"Emma, how many more miles till we reach Wall Maria?" I hear Erwin question. I sped up to him, matching the pace of his horse. Quickly, I do the calculation.

"We're going about fifty miles right now so I would say in estimation ten miles we would reach Wall Maria," I reply. He mutely nods and observes the land around us.

I do the same and notice how quickly Levi's squad takes down the two titans. The way his squad members fly through the air was so graceful. Even he was, despite how much I refuse to admit it.

"It seems I picked the squad leaders well," Erwin sighs after the last Titan falls to the ground.

My eyes linger on Levi's squad as I listen to their loud cheers. All except Levi gave each other high fives. He meets my gaze and smirks.

He knew I wasn't always allowed to fight alongside my squad. He knew I was only here for my brains and not my strength. He reminds me of that everyday. I click my tongue at his cocky ass before turning away.

"Damn it."

I catch Erwin's curious gaze. His posture easing a bit now since we're in the clear.

"Is there something wrong, Emma?" I shake my head and kept my eyes forward.

"No, sir," I reply bluntly.

He watches me a moment longer before speeding up his horse. I don't bother and allow most of my squad mates get in front of me. I was too busy in my thoughts to even realize even both Hanji's and Levi's squad passes me up.

As perusal we were welcomed back by a swarm of people in the Shiganshina District. The center of the road was empty for our horses but with many civilians on the sides with desperate looks on their faces. We left with thirty in our midst.

We came back ten less.

I knew who we lost and the family they belong to. I knew most were here in the crowds. A deafening scream was made.

It was sound of a mother's broken heart, her cries shrieking through the air. I bite my lip to keep from looking. I knew better than to get involved.

"Where is she?!" I hear her wail. "Where's my daughter?!"

I knew who she was talking about. Sylvia Gold, a member of Levi's Squad. She was the only female who died during the mission.

"You tell me where she is, you monster!"

Someone stumbles off their horse and everyone stops. I pull my horse to a stop and force myself to glance over my shoulder. Just a mere few feet behind me I see a wrinkly old woman who wore a simple purple dress with a white apron over it, grasping the collars of a short man.

She was yelling at Levi. As she screamed and yelled he doesn't say word. Instead he stares down at her with his dull silver eyes, saying nothing.

No expression laid upon his face, however there was an icy aura radiating off him. I grit my teeth at his coldness, was there any emotion in him? Couldn't he just simply apologize to her about her loss?

Two soldiers hurry to the two and gently pull the old lady off Levi. He straightens himself before jumping back on his horse. Everyone continues their walk as though nothing happened.

Fuming in anger, I rush past them all. For the past three years I couldn't understand the little empathy the Regiment gave to the casualties's families.

No one comforted them whenever we returned. Always ignoring the cries until two soldiers waltz into their homes to deliver the news in a few days. It made me sick.

I make it back to the barracks. It was a large townhouse consisting of multiple rooms for our stay. I gave the place only a simple glance before steering my horse.

I take my horse to the stables and jump off to see everyone following suit. When I notice Levi, he still had the same expressionless look on his face. It pissed me off. When he jumps off his horse I stomp my way to him.

"The hell's your problem, Levi?!" I yell as I grab his collar. He didn't seem startled by my outburst and stares at me blankly. "She was asking about Sylvia and you couldn't tell her?! What kind of Squad Leader are you?!"

"You're yelling at a superior, brat." He warns with a look. "I'm one rank higher than you."

"Does it look like I give a shit?!" I slam his sorry ass against the stable wall. He grunts at the impact, everyone else surrounds us with shocked expressions.

No one stops us, they never did when we fought. Levi's gaze becomes dark, I wasn't sure what he was actually feeling. His hands wrap around my wrists and he roughly pushes me away.

I stumble a few feet back with my lips pulled in a snarl. I watch him click his tongue at me, his nose scrunching in annoyance.

"That's none of your damn business, Wolfram. And don't you ever lay your hands on me, idiot."

"Excuse me, but she was on your squad!" I shout. "The decency thing to do is tell her mother about her death and how honorable she fought!"

He rolls his eyes, "Unbelievable." He scoffs and pushes his way past the formed crowd.

I stand there perplexed, did he just walk away from me? What right did I give him to show me that amount of disrespect?

"Oi! I'm not finished, you asshat!"  I only made a few steps in my advance until someone grabs my shoulders firmly.

"I think that's enough yelling for one day." I whirl around to see Hanji frowning. She keeps her hands atop my shoulders, her eyes conveying more conversation than her lips.

I knew she hated me picking a fight more than anything. Especially with her comrade. The anger seeps out of me and what was left was only exhaustion.

"Fine," I cave to her muted plea. She nods and gives everyone a look.

"Don't you all have something to do?" And with that everyone scurries inside the barracks. They keep their voices to a minimum until they reach inside. When it was just us two I shake off her grip.

"Why did you stop me, Hanji?" I demand. "I was about to give him a piece of my mind."

"That's why," she sighs. "Look, you can't always pick fights with Captain Levi. You know he can request your demotion."

"I don't give a shit," I snap as I kick a pebble. "That man has nothing better to do than slay Titans and be a pain in the ass."

"And whose ass is he being a pain to?" She questions curiously with wide eyes. My response was hesitant. I couldn't think of anyone besides me. Everyone loved him, praised him like God blessed us with hope.

Humanity's Strongest. That's what they call him now. No matter how I try to look at it, he would always be the pain in my ass and no one else's.

"I just hate how he acts, Hanji." I sigh, hoping to change the subject. "He's just too. . .cold."

Hanji shakes her head, a smile sweeping up to her face. She wraps an arm around me and walks me into the barracks.

"And you aren't?" She challenges with a chuckle. "Both of you are cold as ice ever since our training days. Don't act like you're an angel sent from heaven."

"I'm better than him, though!" I defend.

I couldn't let her compare him and I like we're the same sides of a coin. He wasn't nothing like me nor am I to him. He's colder than any person can be.

"How can you be?" Hanji laughs. "You're rude, he's rude. You're cold and he's cold. Where's the difference?" I shrug off her arm, irritated by this nonsense talk.

"Go mock someone else for a change."

We reach the stairs and I leave her on the main floor. As I trudge my way up the stairs I hear her laughing. Rolling my eyes, I knew she just enjoyed teasing me. But, she always says the same thing.

Too lost in my thoughts I hadn't realized I reached my room. Nor did I realize the person leaning against the wall beside the door. I notice a few people stare and whisper.

When they notice me they sped walk towards the stairs. I was puzzled by such acts and wondered what I done now. I look up to see Levi leaning against the wall.

His arms were crossed with a visible frown upon his face. He glares at the wall across, not even noticing my presence. I scoff at his attempt to look intimidating. Swiftly I walk past him and open my door.

"Shouldn't you be sucking up to the Commander or something?" I snap irritably.

I push my door open, intending to go inside but, an ivory hand reaches for the knob and pulls it shut. I whirl to my left with an angry glare.

"What the hell?!" I explode. "Now you're gonna bother me here too?"

"Shut up, brat!" He orders.

I resist the urge to flinch, my body steeling itself at his tone. Why is he talking to me like I'm some Cadet? I don't loosen my hold on the knob nor does he.

I despised the feeling of his hand over mine, it made me want to vomit. But with the way Levi was glaring at me, I knew something bigger was coming my way.

"What now, jerk?" I growl. He clicks his tongue and takes another step towards me. I smirk at our height. Him being a only two inches shorter than me, I found this enjoyable.

"You got some nerve to grab me like that outside," he observes with a cold stare. "You realize you can get demoted."

"Oh, I didn't realize how petty you can be, Captain."

In the next second I didn't have time to react, I was shocked by the sudden use of force. Levi had grabbed my collar and slammed me roughly against my door. I wince at the impact of my head colliding with the wood. His grip tightens around my shirt with his face inches from mine.

"Listen here, Wolfram," he whispers in a deadly tone. "Put a hand one me again then terrible shit will happen to you."

I couldn't help but scoff. I roll my eyes at his nonsense. He says this now and a billion times more in the past. And nothing happened to me.

"Try me, half-pint," I spit venomously. "Ever since we were in the Training Corps you did nothing. Tch, it seems to me you're a man with no balls--" He slammed me harder and I grunt at the impact.

"Listen here, brat," he growls with his lips to my ear. "You've been getting on my damn nerves for a while now and the reason I did nothing because you're in Erwin's squad," he casts me an icy stare, his mouth tugged into a horrible frown. "Don't think that'll hold me back from now on."

We hold each other's stare, both refusing to back down first. When the sound of loud chattering make its way up the stairs Levi shoves me and let's go. Giving me one last disgusted stare he stomps down the steps leaving me to fume silently. I glare at the way he left with my fists clench tightly at my sides. He waited by my door just to harass me.

"Bastard," I spit before going into my room.
