Forty Two
Credits to kfreak19 & Rae-ChanSempai for the wonderful ship names! >.<
"Neither." I reply a tad too terse. I say nothing more and take a sip of my drink.
A tense silence fill between the three of us as Hanji and Nifa gape at me like a bunch of fish. I put my cup down with a sigh and set my eyes back on them. They didn't seem all that happy by my answer.
"What?" I question with a frown. "Why you staring at me like that?"
"How can you say neither?!" Nifa answers with a question. "Just—how?"
I was puzzled by her question, not understanding what was so upsetting. Even as I glanced at Hanji I could she didn't like my answer too.
"Because I'm not attracted to them. . ?" My words came out as a question for I wasn't sure how I was supposed to answer. Nifa scoffs in disbelief before drowning herself in a fourth cup of ale. Hanji follows suit but slams her glass on the table afterwards.
"You got two, good-looking guys around you and you say you're not attracted?" She shakes her head as though I already answered her question. "That's some BS right there."
"Look, I just don't seem them that way." I sigh. "How can you not?" Nifa suddenly demands hotly. "Edward is sweet and funny and Levi is just—well, hot."
I splutter out the remains of my drink, showering the table with alcohol. I was taken aback by her one word description of Levi. Yet, her nor Hanj seemed bothered by it and looked at me as if I was having a seizure.
"H-hot?" I stammer with bulging eyes. "You think he's hot?"
"Emma, almost every woman in the regiment thinks so," Nifa states with a deadpan look.
"Don't forget some guys too," Hanji adds with a wink.
"But, this is Levi we're talking about!" I exclaim. "A short man with a stoic attitude!"
I was shocked, truly. But it was difficult for me to find ways to disagree with their words.
Did I find Levi hot? Yes, most definitely. But I couldn't let them know that. That would surely betray Levi's and my secret.
"Believe or not, many find that sexy," Nifa grins. "Explain Petra, for god's sake! She's been pining over the Captain for almost three years now!"
A sudden bitter taste abruptly greets my mouth. I quickly despise having their names mentioned in the same topic. It was utterly annoying.
"So? Doesn't mean I do."
Hanji snickers before pushing her glasses to the bridge of her nose. A dreadful feeling suddenly fills my core. "Oh, I beg to differ. After all, I got the facts right here!"
Shoving her hand into her jacket she pulls out a damn notebook. I groan at the sight before slumping down in my chair like a frustrated child.
"Not that bloody notebook!" I groan.
"Yes, indeed, Emma!" Hanji cackles evilly. "You want to keep denying the truth, then I'll just throw back facts!"
She opens the book, landing on her desired page. Her and Nifa smirk deviously while I roll my eyes in utter irritation. I regret telling them anything that night.
"Right here," Hanji announces. "You said you like a guy who doesn't take shit from anyone and is sexy! That describes Levi!"
"It doesn't necessarily have to be him!" I declare with red cheeks. "He just so happens to have what I like!"
"Just so happens, my ass," Nifa snickers. "Just admit, you at least find him attractive."
I hesitate for a moment. Their piercing gazes were solely on me, it felt like they could see through me. I swallow thickly, no matter how much my mind was telling me to just lay everything out, I couldn't do it.
"N-no," I mutter thickly. "He's not my type."
I could sense their rising anger yet, I wasn't sure why this made them so worked up. When I glance at the two once more I knew they weren't entirely irritated by me.
Seeing the red tint on their faces I knew they were quite intoxicated. That somewhat settled the raging waves inside me.
"Alright, fine. Forget about him," Nifa spits with a look. "What about Edward then? He definitely likes you."
I had to think for a moment, her words were slightly slurred. I watch her carelessly swing her hand that held her glass, causing some of the liquid to land on Hanji.
"Hey! What the hell, Nifa?" Hanji bellows it as drunkenly. I shake my head at the two, maybe we should head out soon. "Answer the question!" Hanji suddenly whines. "If you don't then—then, I'll throw up on your boots."
I sigh in defeat at her weak threat. Setting my glass down, I lean back on my chair. "Same deal," I reply. "He's my friend, that's all."
"Don't give us that shit!" Hanji exclaims. "Were you not there earlier when he hugged you?! Clearly, you two got some chemistry."
"Yeah! He even gave you a nickname!" Nifa pouts.
"Nifa, he gives everyone a nickname," I deadpan. "Yeah, well, I'm still waiting for mine!" She cries before drowning herself with another glass.
"I'm with you, Nifa!" Hanji joins and wraps an arm around her shoulders. "That little jerk hasn't even tried to give me one!"
God, this was going to get worse if I didn't stop them. We were already getting questioning looks from the locals. I grit my teeth, damn it all. I have no choice after all.
"Fine! If you two shut up then I'll tell you the truth!"
They abruptly stop their crying and blubbering. A sudden gleam sparkles in their eyes. They lean close with stupid grins plastered on their faces. I cringe at the stench of their breath.
"But, if this leaves the table I'll personally hunt you down and shove a stick up your asses. Get me?"
They nod eagerly, completely disregarding my threat. I scoff at their excited faces. They were really drunk if they can't take me seriously. I shake my head, I was stupid for doing this. God, I hope nothing happens.
"I guess—I guess you can say I like him a little."
They don't answer immediately and stare at me like a couple of squirrels. Blank as their faces were, I could see something unfold in their eyes. A sudden squeal escapes Nifa's lips and she giggles uncontrollably.
"I knew it! You guys are totally in love!"
"I wouldn't say that—"
"I can finally use those ship names!" Hanji gleams. "Edem and Edmma!"
"Oh my god, that's adorable!" Nifa grins. Yet, I wasn't finding any of this amusing.
What I wanted was to slam my head through a wall. I can only imagine the endless teasing and stupid grins I'll get for days. Why the hell did I dig myself a grave?
"Tell us everything!" Hanji suddenly urges. "I must know everything!" Nifa slams her hands on the table bringing my body into a startle.
"Every. Single. Detail," she demands.
It was like an anvil was being pushed down my shoulders. Their stares held so much pressure, I hated it. I abruptly stand with a look.
"No, I told you enough for one night," I declare. "You two are hella drunk and need to head back to HQ."
"But—we were about to have some fun!" Hanji complains.
"Yeah, interrogating me? I don't think so." I snap my fingers and point at the door. "Let's go."
When I was finally able to walk them out the tavern, I watched them stagger down the street towards HQ. I listen to their drunken chants and scoff to myself. I finally turn to the opposite direction, heading to my apartment for tonight.
The streets were empty with only a few streetlights lighting up my path. I attempted to keep my mind blank but, it kept wandering to Edward. Those two made it clear he likes me.
Yet, I wonder, could I really see myself with him? Sure, he was sweet, funny, and protective but I gained no attraction to him.
My heart doesn't race like it does when I think of Levi. Was that weird?
I was yanked out of my thoughts when a blood-curdling scream greets my ears. Immediately I stop in my tracks. I look frantically left and right wondering where that sound came from.
But I was alone tonight, nothing stirred under the moonless night. When a few minutes passed, I began to think it was only my imagination. Taking in a shaky breath I begin my walk once more.
There was another scream. This time it brought cool chill down my spine. It was a woman, she was screaming for help.
My hands shook, my heart beating tremendously hard against my chest. No matter how much my mind told me to take flight and flee, I instead ran towards those screams. I ran down a dark ally unsure what these scream would lead me to.
A feral cackle started to become clear as well as uncontrollable sobbing. When I make into a small opening between some vacant buildings, I find a young woman on the ground. She was weeping while shaking furiously.
She hasn't noticed me, I quickly scan my eyes down her body. When I see no injuries a small sensation of relief greets me. But that quickly diminishes when my eyes land on her clothing.
Scout uniform. My throat becomes dry, I've got to get her out of here. I reach out to her yet stop midway when a maniac chuckle echoes around me.
"Seems like I'll enjoy tonight," someone muses excitedly. "Two wonderful prey. Each one looking so damn exquisite for me to cut up."
The woman yips in fright and scrambles away. "P-please! I did nothing wrong!"
"Oh, I know, love," the man agrees.
I whirl around to see a silhouette of a man standing in the shadows. When he steps into the light he carried a knife with a heavy, black hood covering his face. He cocks his head, and suddenly points the knife at me.
"It's her that's in the wrong."
I don't respond, instead I take a step in front of the girl. So this is what he looks like, I muse to myself. He's the one who killed the four other Scouts.
I watch him cock his head, "Aren't you going to say something?"
I clench my fists, "You're under arrest."
"Oh? For what, darling?"
"The murders of four Scouts and attempting murder on this young woman."
I wasn't sure where my confidence came from. I was standing before a serial killer, he could attack me any second. But my body doesn't betray me, allowing me to stand tall.
He didn't seemed fazed by my declaration, he chuckles once. Then bursts into psychopathic laugh.
"You—you truly think I killed them?" He laughs. He shakes his head before taking in a deep sigh. "Oh, I didn't kill them. I just used them, that's all."
"The hell is that supposed to mean?" I demand. He chuckles once more as if what I said was amusing.
"I needed to lure you out," he exclaims. "Even that 'woman' you try to protect, was also in on it!"
"What—!?"
A pair of burly arms suddenly hook underneath mine, keeping me in place. I thrash wildly but there was no use.
"Such a sinner you are," the man who held me giggles. "You're a murderer. Just like us."
I attempt to glance over my shoulder but when I tried he would tighten his grip. It made me grunt in pain.
"Now," the man with a black hood sighs. He stalks towards me, knife out. My eyes widen and I try to release myself from the other's hold. "Let us punish you for such heinous acts."
"I—I have done nothing!" I yell frantically. "I don't even know you!"
He quickly shushes me by pressing the flat surface of the knife against my lips. "You will. . . Emma."
Fear devours my mind and body. I shook violently and attempted pull myself away from getting cold knife. I couldn't scream, no one would hear.
I was helpless. I watch him slowly retract his knife, getting ready to stab me. "No—don't!" I beg.
With bulging eyes I watch him attempting to thrust the knife in me. He stops short, a yell started to echo around us.
"Let her go!"
Something suddenly made impact with the man in the black hood. He grunts in pain and stumbles backwards. Someone runs in front of me, fists out ready for a fight. The mere sight stunned me. I stopped my thrashing.
"Edward??"
