Forty Six
To my displeasure, we did have a talk. And it wasn't something I was overly happy with. Levi had informed me of his meeting with Erwin and to quote him it was, 'A fucking waste of time.'
Despite his information of last night's incident he claimed Erwin didn't seemed fazed in the slightest. And I knew that pissed off Levi. On top of that, Levi has placed Edward as a suspect but, Erwin won't comply that assumption.
Even I was having a hard time thinking of Edward as one. Hell, that boy was sweeter than candy, how can he be an accomplice of the murderers? But then again, I did see a new side of him earlier, Levi might not be wrong to accuse him.
So, now Erwin knows of my work that I did behind his back. But Levi didn't mention if he was displeased or not. But other than that, Levi didn't gained any vital information.
Only with the order to sit back and wait. I still sat on desk while Levi had outages himself on the couch. He looked troubled and glared at the wall in front of him.
"You deserve to work on this case," Levi grumbles. I was stunned by Levi's claim. I don't think he ever sided with me on any matter of topic. Somehow, it brought my heart to skip a beat.
"Should, shouldn't who knows?" I sigh. "It's Erwin's choice and even if you said I was important to solving it we both know it's his decision."
"Fuck that!" Levi spats. He sends me a deadly glare. "He's being a stubborn old man! He doesn't know when to accept help when offered."
"But he's Commander of the Survey Corps," I remind. "You can't just order him to do something."
Levi keeps his glare on me a moment longer. I watch them narrow with a frown appearing over his lips. I tried to read his face but, like always I couldn't tell what he's thinking.
His gaze was causing me to squirm and my stomach to churn. I wasn't sure why he was looking at me like that.
"What?"
He doesn't respond immediately. He blinks slowly before furrowing his thin brows together.
"You're different," Levi mumbles. I wasn't sure if he was answering my question or talking to himself. But nonetheless, I cock my head.
"Different how?"
Levi takes a stand, he shuffles to me but doesn't get too close. He keeps a decent three feet between us.
"You're too—timid," he observes. "And it's fricking annoying." A little irk forms over my temple. I set my lips to a frown as I narrowed my eyes.
"Cheapshot," I mutter. "What did I do?"
"It's not what you did. It's what you didn't do. Shouldn't you be throwing a fit or something?"
"Why would I do that?"
Levi sets his face into a 'is it just me or are you dumb,' look. He scoffs while crossing his arms. "I just told you what Erwin and I talked about," he reminds hotly. "And I said Erwin has to consider your position on this case."
I wasn't sure why my reaction was a big deal. So what if he told me everything? I don't need to make a big deal out of it. Hell, I wasn't even there. It's like Levi expects me to say something.
"Okay, so you told me. Why do you want me to make a big deal out of it?"
I jump off the deal finally gaining strength back in my legs. I frown down at the Captain while he does the same.
"See, this is a perfect example of being annoying," he snaps.
"I'm not being annoying!" I exclaim. "I haven't even done anything!"
"Yeah, that's annoying! Usually you would scream and yell about something like this for who knows how long! But, you're over here acting as if you don't want a position to handle the case!"
"Acting calm and collected isn't a bad thing, Levi," I fume. "Maybe you should try it some time."
He scoffs while turning his head. "Calm and collected, my ass. You're never calm and collected."
"Tch, don't act like you know me."
"Want me to make a list?! You hate tea and rather drink alcohol or coffee. You like to read and will do it for hours if you could. You're terrible at cleaning and cooking with no sense of improving. And you got a ridiculous fear of rats."
He held out his fingers as he listed them all. To be honest, I was surprised by how much he actually knows me. I never thought Levi observed the things I liked or disliked. I was taken aback, a large lump clogged my throat. I was gaping at him like an idiot.
"And lastly, you got a temper," Levi adds. "Which means, by now you should've cussed out Erwin or threaten to give him a piece of your mind. But you haven't."
When I don't give an immediate answer, Levi smirks. He lowers his hand while cocking his head.
"Aren't you going to deny it?" He says coyly. "Or, am I speaking the truth?"
I curse him in my head. Damn him and his perceptiveness. No matter how much I wanted to bite and snap at how wrong he was, deep down I knew he got me cornered.
And it pissed me off. I hate how he can easily read me like an open book while I have trouble understanding what he's even thinking. How can he know so much about me when I never opened up to him like I would with Hanji or Nifa?
He took my silence as good enough answer. Triumph takes a glint in his eyes.
"So, what's the problem now?" He questions. "Did you just make me go and yell off Erwin's head to make me look stupid?"
"No one asked you to do that," I grumble.
"Tch, talk about ungrateful."
"Look, just because I'm not reacting the way you want doesn't mean I don't care," I sigh.
"So, you do care." Levi states with a huff. "Then why isn't it bothering you?"
"I—it—Argh, I don't know!" I explode in frustration. I turn away from him and rub my head vigorously.
Having Erwin to only consider me truly brought a tingle in my core but, I've realized it wasn't like before. I wasn't angry or insulted but instead, I felt smoothed out. Like I avoided a mishap or something.
A part of me was somewhat glad he was just considering me. It meant there was a high chance he would refuse my offer to help again. Besides, I wasn't sure if I could run into those two again without shaking.
I couldn't get the guy with the hoodie's words out of my head.
You're a murderer. Just like us.
Simply thinking about that had me clench my fists to resist shaking. He had called me a murderer. And there was only one thing I committed to be called as such.
A dark memory instantly flashed through my mind. Chris was screaming for me but I don't rush to him. I've watched him get eaten. Just like everyone else.
The same cold chill slithers down my back. My mouth suddenly begins to dry up, I could only take a couple short breathes.
"Emma. . .Emma. Emma!"
I jump out of my thoughts, almost yelping at the stern tone. I blink once, Levi was standing in front of me with a deep frown. Why did he look worried?
"Didn't you hear what I said?" He questions. "I asked if this had to do with last night."
It took me only a moment to understand what he meant. I quickly shake my head, I even waved my hands in front of me.
"N-no, of course not!" I assure. "Look, just drop the subject, alright? Clearly none of us are getting anywhere."
Levi only hums to my words. His piercing sliver eyes narrow like they could see into my soul. I did all that I can to hold his uncomfortable stare.
I couldn't allow Levi to know what I truly felt. I could simply imagine the annoyed face he'll make and the bitter insults he'll throw at me. I knew better than anyone he couldn't understand my constant trauma. No one could.
"Tch, whatever then, brat." Levi drops his instead gaze allowing me to release a breath I held. He swiftly twists his heel and marches to the door. "Oi, we're still on for tonight, right?" He asks sternly with a hand on the doorknob.
He doesn't bother looking back as I stare at his back. As much as I wanted to release my stress, I wasn't sure if there was any courage in me to walk home alone at night.
The mere thought had my legs feel like jelly. I shake my head with a deflated sigh. Levi is going to be upset.
"Actually, about that. . ."

"You know, this wasn't really necessary. . ."
"A simple thank you is better than your dumb complaining," Levi snaps from behind. Walking through the doorway and into the apartment I send Levi a wistful smile.
"Thank you, oh kind sir. I'm eternally grateful to have such a gentleman walk me home."
He rolls his eyes at my poor act and screechy tone. Nonetheless, it doesn't fail to bring a smirk to his lips.
"If you're going to be an ass then you shouldn't have whined about walking alone at night."
"Hey, I was just hinting that tonight wasn't a good night for that!" I defend.
I plop down on the couch and cross my arms. Levi still stood in front of the closed door while glaring teasingly at me. He had walked me home despite the constant refusal I gave.
I did tell him of my wariness but it didn't mean I wanted him to tag along. I was attempting to suggest we meet up before sunset. But clearly, Levi didn't want that.
"Are you going to stand there or are you going to sit?" I ask noticing how he leaned against the door. Levi scoffs before pushing himself off the door.
"I'm just about to leave," he sighs. "You're home now so, I did my gentleman duty or whatever crap you've been saying."
A strong flow of panic rushes through me. The mere thought of being alone made my insides twist into knots. Even worse, Levi and I didn't even do anything today. I haven't kissed him once.
"You're leaving?" I gape.
"I just said it," Levi grumbles.
"But don't you think that it's—you know, too early?"
He raises a quizzical brow at me. He studies me for a minute before growing slightly. "Emma, it's almost ten o'clock. That's late."
"O-okay then shouldn't that mean you should stay?"
I hadn't realize I had shot to my feet. Only a coffee table separated Levi and I but, I wished so badly that the gap closed between us.
"Emma, what's gotten into you?" Levi demands. "You're acting like a spoiled brat. I walked you home, what else do you want me to do?"
I couldn't answer his question. Even I wasn't sure why I was panicky and desperate. I couldn't even understand the anxious pounding of my heart. All I knew was that I didn't want to be alone.
"Stay!" I blurt out. "Stay with me, Levi."
Seeing the shocked look in his eyes my panic only increases. Dammit, I didn't word it right.
"I-I mean, just for tonight!" I add quickly. "You did say, you'll give me what I deserve, remember?"
I guess this is what it means when you're desperate. You'll say whatever you think will get you what you want. Even if it was truly embarrassing.
I try to ignore my flamed cheeks and keep my hopeful gaze upon Levi. His stunned expression had disappeared leaving him expressionless. My heart drops at the sight.
"So, that's it, huh? You think I'll let a spoiled brat like you get what you want simply because you're whining for it?" Levi questions with a sigh. "So pathetic."
I couldn't hide the flick that overcame my body. Did I really look that pathetic? Was I too desperate? I avert my gaze, now I really feel like an idiot.
"But. . ."
I hear boots collide with the wooden floor, the sound stopping at my right. I don't bother looking. Shame was eating me up from the inside.
"We are at your apartment now. We don't have to worry about anyone barging in." Levi's hand delicately grasps my chin. He gently turns my head so his eyes met mine. I was surprised to see how lust-filled they were.
"You're going have to earn me," he whispers. "In other words, show me what how much want me."
