Forty One
Levi's question lingers in the air. No one possessed the courage nor the energy to answer him. All, except Hanji of course.
Even though I couldn't see her face since her back was turned, I could feel slight tension looming over her. I still didn't understand why both Levi and Hanji possess an awkward tension between them.
"Yes," she replies curtly. "As you can see, we were reconnecting. Does that make your angry ass happy now?"
I stare at her with my jaw dropped. It was quite rare for her to speak in such a vulgar way. But it wasn't that that shocked me. It was who she said it to. Not once had I heard her speak to Levi in such a way.
"Hanji!" I hiss with narrowed eyes. She glances over her shoulder. She stares innocently at me.
"What?"
I give her a look as to say, What the hell?, but it didn't seem to sink through. She only shrugs simply before looking back at Levi. He was glaring at her with such anger I thought it could kill her.
"Whatever, Shitty Glasses," Levi spits just as venomously. "I need to talk to Emma."
Hanji makes a mocking gesture with her hand at me as if to say, go on. My face was twisted in confusion as I bite my bottom lip. I knew she was pushing his buttons, it wouldn't be a surprise if he blew up right here. But instead he takes one step in my office with his face stoic as ever.
"Alone." He said that word wth such emphasis, it caused Nifa to nudge Hanji in the arm.
"Let's just go." I hear her murmur. "Whatever you're doing, is not worth it."
For a moment, I thought Hanji was about to refuse. I thought she was going to keep going till Levi's temper was unleashed. But, she only takes in a deep breath with a look of defeat. She suddenly whirls to me.
"After work," she orders. I couldn't say a word for Hanji had stomped out of the office and past Levi. Nifa was on her tail, she bid me a sweet goodbye before running down the hall.
All that was left was Edward, and it didn't seem like he was leaving any time soon. Levi possibly got the gist and narrowed his eyes into a cold glare.
"Cadet," he warns lowly. "There's dirt downstairs that isn't going to sweep itself."
Edward wavers for a second but only tighten his hold around me. Levi's eyes suddenly dart down to my waist. His lips forming a sort of scowl.
"Are you going to let go of your lieutenant?"
Immediately I look up at Edward. He too was also glaring back at Levi. It was a surprise to see him do such a thing, I thought he looked up to the Captain.
But that wasn't as important as the radiating anger I felt from Levi.
"Edward," I whisper calmly. "You should go." He looks down at me with eyes wider than ever. He quirks up a brow and doesn't speak for a moment.
"But I want to stay," he whines softly. It was low enough for only me to hear.
"Captain's orders," I answered solemnly. "What he says goes, Edward. Don't push him." Edward stares at me for a moment, I wait earnestly for his answer.
"Fine," he sighs loudly. "I'll go." I nod with a small smile. At least he didn't lose his skill to listen to orders.
I attempt to pry myself out of his hold but it only made him tighten it further. Confused as I was, I didn't make any complaint just yet. He brings me close, my body abruptly colliding with his.
"Um, Edward? What're you—"
"I'll see you tomorrow then." He planted a kiss on my temple. My eyes widen at the touch. I stare at him in question but, he simply smiles and let's go.
I watch him head towards the door. I didn't fail to notice how he and Levi share a haughty glare though. He lingers for a minute to hold Levi's stare.
But just as I ordered, Edward then briskly walks out the office and closes the door behind him. A sigh escapes me, my heart finally beating normally again.
"What the hell was that?"
Blinking once, I finally look at Levi. His eyes were set on an irritated glare while his lips were downturned into a frown. He had crossed his arms as he awaited my reply. But I only just shrug before turning back to my desk.
"What was what?" I question lightly. "They only came in to set some things straight."
"You mean Hanji and Nifa, right? Or do you mean that dumbass-looking fool who just left?" His voice was layered with bitterness and despise. I wasn't sure what he had to be so displeased about. I wondered if he just came here to irritate me.
"That dumbass-looking fool happens to be on your squad," I remind tiredly as I pick up a paper. "And he has a name."
"Does it look like I give a shit?" I listen to Levi huff loudly as he kicked the side of my couch.
I glance over my shoulder to see him glaring down at the furniture as if it did him some personal wrong. I watch him curiously as he starts to mumble to himself. From what I was able grasp was bits and pieces of curse words towards whoever he was talking about.
"So, you two a thing or something?" He whirls his head to me to set his death glare on me.
It was like small daggers into my soul. I wanted to looked away but knew he would scold me for it later on. So instead I straighten my shoulders and stare blankly back at him.
"You mean Edward and I?"
"No, I mean you and the chair. Yes, I mean you and that idiot!" He rolls his eyes with a scoff. "You're so stupid sometimes."
"Damn it, Levi, what the hell? Did someone kick you in the balls or something?"
He sends me an exasperated look. He glares at me in way to say I was stupid. "Why the hell would you ask that?"
"Because you're being weird!" I exclaim. "You've been here for only ten minutes and you've been yelling at me."
"At least someone's doing something," he grumbles childishly. He leans against the armrest and glares down at the floor. "You didn't answer my question," he mutters. "Are you and Edward a thing?"
I was skeptical about his question. I wasn't sure why he was making a big deal and I wasn't sure why he was so angry. But the more I stared at his pout and sensed his irritation the more I understood what was going on.
"I see now," muse with a smile. "You're jealous."
"Tch, jealous of what exactly?" Levi scoffs coldly. "I'm just asking a question."
"Yes, in an angry way." I make my way towards him until I stood before him. He still didn't meet my gaze and that made it all the more amusing. "Is the captain jealous of a cadet?"
I place my hands atop his knees. Levi refused to answer as he sets his lips together into a firm line. I smirk and slowly slide my hands up his thighs.
He takes in a sharp breath yet, he still doesn't speak. Interesting, I thought. I guessed this wasn't enough.
I then opt towards leaning towards him, till my face was inches from his. But I wasn't leaning in for a kiss, I made sure my lips brushed against his ear instead.
"Answer me, Captain," I purr seductively. "What was it that you didn't like? The way he held me? Or the way he kissed me?" I squeeze his thighs and small, shaky breath escapes him.
"Emma," he breathes. "I swear to god, if you don't stop I'll—"
"You'll what? Punish me?" I scoff lightly, allowing my breath to coat his skin. He shivers in response. "I think I'll do that to you if you don't answer my questions."
Levi sucks in a breath, his cheeks coated with a fury red blush. And all I could think was how damn adorable it made him look. I couldn't resist so I kissed the lobe of his ear. Then I bushed my lips against his skin till I reached his neck.
"Answer me, Levi," I say. "I'm not a patient woman." Pressing my lips against his neck sent him to unconsciously grab my shoulders.
"F—fuck you," he grunts huskily. "I'll get you for this." I smirk unresponsive. If he wasn't willing to play along then I'll just force him.
He was already becoming putty in my hands. Latching my lips upon the spot, I began to suck on his neck. A low grunt escapes Levi and he squeezes my shoulders.
He cranes his neck to the side to give me better access. I move my hands up to his hip and hold him down to keep him steady.
I gently press my tongue against the mark I made and that suddenly sets Levi into a moaning mess. God, it was like music to my ears.
"C'mon, Levi," I urge as I feel myself to lose control. "I'll do it again if you don't comply."
I lick the spot again for more emphasis and the man has the audacity to moan again. When I glance up to see his face it took all my willpower not to push him down on the couch. Eyes closed and biting his lower lip, he had the look of pleasure.
It suited him quite well. I was amazed, I haven't done anything worthwhile yet. I went back to peppering his neck with kisses.
"Damn it, fine," he breathes. "He kissed you and I didn't like it."
"Why?"
"Don't fucking make me say it, Emma," he growls.
"Oh, that's fine," I smirk. "I am in control here." I found another spot worthy of my time and suck on his skin once more. Levi pulls me close, spreading his legs in the process.
"Fuck—because I was jealous!" He blurts out. I huff in satisfaction and press my tongue once more again this skin. Levi moans a little louder.
"Good," I praise as I pull away. "Now I can answer yours."
Levi finally looks at me. His blush betraying him completely as he tried to seem angry. I only rolled my eyes before pecking his lips. "We're not a thing."
When I turn back to my desk I could only imagine the befuddled look that befallen his face. I counted the seconds before he demanded answers out of me.
"Then what's with the kiss and him holding you?" He seethes. "That's nowhere near friendly."
I knew he was right but I've been doing my best to ignore Edward's intentions and feelings. It was easier for me to stay friends with him.
"It's just what he does," I shrug simply.
"Tch, just what he does, my ass," Levi scoffs before leaning against my desk. He doesn't look at me as he attempted to calm his demeanor. I was glad when he finally dropped the subject. "Hanji and Nifa?" He questions.
"Were only here to apologize to me." I glance to my side and give him a small smile. "I'm going out tonight with them."
"Why are you telling me?" Levi mutters. "Because you'll miss me."
I set my eyes on to his neck. Two small love marks marked his ivory skin and it brought a sense of satisfaction to my core. Sensing my gaze, Levi hastily covers them with his collar. A rosy tint greeted his cheeks once more.
"After what you did, I'll be glad you're gone," he snips. I release an airy chuckle and look away. We both knew that was a lie, but I don't make no indication of that.
"Sure," I murmur sarcastically. It was silent once more and I try to refocus on my previous task.
As I skimmed through reports I listen to Levi shuffle beside me. I knew he was watching and I do my best to ignore his intimidating gaze.
"Don't tell them about what we've been doing," he warns. "It's none of their business."
"Why would I tell them?" I inquire.
"Look, I'm just giving you a warning," Levi says firmly. "See to it that no topic includes you and me."
Oh, I was sure Levi wouldn't come up in to tonight's conversation. Seeing the way Hanji and Nifa eyed Edward and I, it was obvious their minds would be set on that. I wasn't worried like Levi nor did I feel the need to heed his warning.
"Relax, " I sigh with a mocking smile. "The world doesn't revolve around you. There's many things we'll be talking about instead. Trust me."

Oh, how wrong I was to believe they wouldn't bring up Levi. Who was I fooling? They've been set on our odd relationship since day one.
Sitting in our usual spot in the back of the tavern, I watched Nifa and Hanji holler in laughter as they clank glasses. I sit across them with a small grimace.
"We know something's going on," Hanji grins. "You—You're too close with them."
Nifa nods vigorously, her lips spread into a devious smile. She takes another swig from her glass before sighing heavily.
"Admit it already, Emma!" She whines. "You got thing for one of them!"
I eye them both suspiciously. I had to tread carefully. Not only would I betray my secret with Levi but things could stir up between Edward and I.
I desired for none of these but they trapped me in a corner. Sweat beaded my forehead as I force myself to laugh loudly.
"What are you talking about?" I ask.
"Levi and Edward!" Nifa sighs. "Something's going on and we know it!"
"Yeah! Now spill! Are you interested in both of them?" Hanji sets her curious gaze upon me.
"What? No, of course not!"
"Then who??" She pried. She slams her glass atop the table. "Levi or Edward?"
I chew my bottom lip. Damn them, they're making me choose now? Seeing their eager expressions and prying eyes only set my stomach to churn.
I had to choose, they wouldn't leave me alone if I didn't. But I wasn't sure who.
Levi or Edward?
