Chapter 1: A Child's Wish

When you're a three year old, you don't think of your future that hard. You only care if your crayons still work and TV shows, like Hero's Journey. Now Hōshasei loved watching those shows like any other kid, his smile was just as big as his excitement. He'd watch in awe and admiration of the heroes that came on the episodes to defeat the villains. Beating the bad guys was the highlight of any kid's show. His mother, Kagaku, watched her son in fondness. She was so happy that her little angel wanted to be a hero; she kept encouraging him, saying how amazing he would be! His father, Enmaku, didn't comment on his son's dreams. Enmaku rather focused on his research and work. His job consisted of researching how certain medication effects quirk users; how it can benefit or hurt depending on the medication used on particular users. So far, they have discovered better medication for mutant quirk users. Occasionally, his wife would help by using her quirk to mix certain chemicals. Kagaku was a science teacher at an elementary school since her quirk, Chemical Reaction, was perfectly suited for it. On her days off she'd would help Enmaku with his research.

Kagaku would sometimes wish and ask her husband to play with their son. He would often dismiss her, claiming he was too busy or tired to play with Hōshasei that day.  Enmaku eventually stopped ignoring her requests after one day Kagaku decided to call his work place to ask for time off for him. His boss decided to ask Enmaku to take at least 4 days off so he could connect with his son. While he was angry that his work was put on hold, he fell back in love with his wife. He began to learn to pay attention to his son.

Hōshasei was so excited to turn four. He knew he would get a quirk soon, and he was practically bouncing off the walls of his home. His birthday was held and the family celebrated by inviting a few of his classmates. Some had already gotten their quirk before the age or a little after turning four. He was happy that his father had suddenly started taking in interest in him around 4 months ago; he was starting to bond with his dad well just like his mom said he would! After all his classmates left, his mother gave him a gift that she hid away so Hōsha could open it in private. Enmaku also had gotten him a present, but was a little self conscious about giving it to him during the party. His father never really gave much thought into the presents before. He figured Hōshasei was too young to care at the time and was easily satisfied with simple things. His mother gave him a knitted blanket she had been working on for a year. His father gave him an All Might action figure. Both items were cherished by the mint haired boy; held close to his chest as he thanked his parents. Today was a good day! His father played with him! His mother baked a cake and let him stay up! Ice cream too! Fun birthday games and music! Hōsha tired himself out, he laid in the main room on the floor. His parents tucked him into his room, Kagaku kissed his forehead while her husband watched from the doorway. Afterwards they closed the door and cleaned up before going to bed.

He had made his wish that day.

His wish was to have a strong quirk and make his father proud of him.

A simple wish. A childish wish.

He had received his quirk a month later.

He had gone to school and it was time for a break for kids to talk about what happened over the break. Hōshasei's mouth began to emit a mint green smoke, he didn't think much of it since he didn't feel different. He only coughed as more came from his mouth, though nothing hurt. After about 10 minutes, one of his classmates began to cough violently and tell the teacher they felt sick. Around five others raised their hands in agreement. It was then the teacher took notice to Hōsha in the back corner of the room near the windows. His friend, Akami, fell over after being exposed to the smoke for too long. One by one his classmates passed out, fell ill, or started coughing. The teacher called for help and eventually the heroes and police came.

It wasn't until after everything did Hōshasei realize that he might've killed someone with his quirk. He wasn't sure how to deactivate it, he was in such a state of panic and confusion that he didn't notice the mask that was placed on him. Hōsha was removed from the school grounds, immediately went to see a specialist to mark his quirk in medical recorders.  It wasn't until a few days later when his mom hugged him crying did he realize that, just maybe, he was a murderer. He was only four years old and a month. No child should be arrested at that age, but he was. No kid should have died so young, but his friends were gone in the ground. Akami was gone. Hōsha knew this since he had visited him in the hospital; Akami's parents didn't want Hōshasei to see their son. However after a few words from Akami, they relented.

Akami, he didn't want to die. Though he also held no anger to what happened, his friend got his quirk- he knew that Hōsha didn't understand what it was. No one was a doctor in their classroom. So to Akami, unless there was a doctor to tell them all what Hōshasei's quirk was, it wasn't Hōsha's fault that he was dying. He wanted to let Hōsha know that it was okay- that it was going to be alright. Though in the middle of Akami talking, his heart rate spiked before dropping. Loud beeping was heard as doctors and nurses rushed in along with Akami's parents and Hōsha took this as his que to leave. About four other of his classmates died within that same week as Akami. Within that time, his mother had received a letter in the mail stating that he would no longer be allowed on school grounds. News articles came out, stating that he had been born with a villainous quirk. Claiming he had killed potential future heroes.

His mother quit her job and decided to homeschool Hōshasei.

His father began to be buried in his work once more.

Hōshasei eventually turned seven years old, his mother and father got money together to commission a mask that let his smoke become regular air and release out via the air-purifying element. It worked like a regular mask but with extra features and backwards. His mask tended to let out a hiss of air if too much smoke accumulated in the air-purifying canister on both sides of the mask. This was given to him about a year after the incident, he was given another one to be able to use later when he got older. Kagaku, had tried to coax Hōshasei to learn to deactivate his quirk; telling him it was alright and that they should try. By this age, Hōsha was at a 14 year old's level. So he did try.

His mother died two months later after their secret sessions to attempt to give Hōshasei a normal life. He failed to deactivate his quirk each time, having flashbacks to the funerals and Akami's lifeless body in the casket. Kagaku never was afraid of him, always telling him that she was okay. His mother's last gifts to him were a hug, his baked birthday cake, a card and a newer blanket she made. She told him to check her room to find the last present, but she was always good at hiding things, so Hōsha never found it.

His father, after his wife died, now decided to ask Hōshasei a question that would change everything. How he would see his son, how his son would see his dad- the last shred of normalcy.

Enmaku asked Hōshasei when he turned 10...

"Do you want to make me proud?"

Hōsha- like the lonely child he was now- looked at his father with such hope. He'd do anything to make life easier for his father, for himself. As long as he wasn't alone anymore. What did his father want? It was simple really. Enmaku wanted to do research, continue his research. What better way to test the medication than on someone who's quirk greatly dealt with chemicals? From that moment forward, Hōshasei regretted his birthday wish from those years ago. Half his body turned a black-gray like color as well as his eye. A horrible reaction from a test medication that his father wanted to try with his quirk specifically. Enmaku learned not to mess too much with his quirk from that point forward, now it was only to get notes about side effects. Long days locked in the basement if his father had guests over. It was all to make him proud.

Enmaku got lots of money from his research, he paid his son for 'helping' him. This is what the cycle is day to day. Until he turned 15. The one of many days his father made him go deliver papers to his job. He was on his way back home, he had applied to U.A. and was waiting to hear back. Hōshasei only applied to get control over his quirk, or maybe still try to be a hero. A small part of him was hoping that he was accepted. He took his usual route, however today, he wanted to go down back alleys to get home faster and avoid people. It was also a way to think. There wasn't supposed to be anyone in the alleys that afternoon.

Hōsha constantly thinks back to that day.

Perhaps if he had wished for something else, this could've been avoided. His mom, Akami, his classmates. Being arrested. How could he have known though? It was a child's wish after all.

Maybe he was born to be a villain?

It was a thought that crossed his mind several times. Each time he shook away the thought, no person is born evil. So no one can be born a villain!

Hōshasei hates his wish. It was a stupid birthday wish...but it was a child's wish.
