Chapter 1

Robbinkit looked out through the crack in the brambles on the roof of the nursery. The light of the moon shown through the crack glimmering across his red pelt turning it silver. He forgot about his clan for a moment closing his eyes listening to the whispers in the shadows. He sighed. He would be six moons the next day then soon an apprentice. And their leader, Cloudstar was ill and on his last life. Ironically, a rouge who had just joined the clan was taking his place as leader for the next few days till he was better, Though Robbinkit doubted he would be. The rouges name was Jake. He despised him as did multiple others in the clan. But not enough to vote against him. He looked around the nursery at the other kits and queens already sleeping. He lies his head on his paws closing his eyes falling asleep.

He sat in the clearing. Jake had called a meeting and was telling the clan that Cloudstar had died in his sleep the night before. The clan mourned him. Jake looked sad but he still knew he was now leader. "Who will be the deputy?" a black and orange cat named Willowshade called out. "Honeytail will be deputy." Jake said nodding to the young she cat. The clan chanted her name as she went to sit behind jake on the wet rock. He wondered if Jake would even bother to get a leader name or nine lives. He glared at the gray tom and betted he would not. he is no leader! He thought his gaze full of hatred as he stared at Jake. "Clan dismissed." Jake said and all the cats scattered. "Robbinkit." He heard Jake call to him. He stopped and sighed turning around. "What?" he asked. "it's time for you to be an apprentice. Honeytail has agreed to be your mentor." Jake explained. Robbinpaw glared at him but nodded. He did not even think to make an apprentice ceremony. He hissed under his breath but did not say anything allowed. Honeytail saw his frustration and gestured him forward. "it's ok. Jake just does not know the full ways of the clan and the warrior code. He'll get used to it don't worry." Robbinpaw doubted it highly. Jake did not know anything about the clans and never would. He tried to agree but he could not. "Sure..." he said. "Now Robbinpaw, go to the apprentice den. Find a nest, get settled then meet me by the camp entrance for our first day of training." She said a smile on her face. He smiled back and nodded, "Ok." He padded off in the direction of the apprentice den. He squeezed inside. Gingerpaw looked up, "Robbinkit what are you doing in here?" He asked. "It's not Robbinkit anymore. Its Robbinpaw." He said the anger showing in his eyes again. "What-? Did I miss your ceremony?" he asked confusion in his eyes. "There was no ceremony!" he snapped. "Jake doesn't bother to do anything right! He has no respect for the warrior code!" Gingerpaw looked taken aback at his outburst. Robbinpaw flinched. "Sorry... I didn't mean to snap- I am just angry. Jake is no leader. I wish Cloudstar were here..." he said quietly. Gingerpaw nodded slowly. "I get it. But Jake will turn out to be a great leader if Cloudstar chose him." Even Gingerpaw was starting to like Jake! How could he? Jake would never be a good leader. He huffed turning his back on his fellow apprentice and sat down in an empty scentless nest. He claimed it as his and gave his pelt a quick groom. He sighed and got to his feet. Padding out of the apprentice den he stopped when he heard familiar cats talking. He looked towards the direction of the sound. He saw Honeytail, Jake, Volcanicstar and Daperclaw. Dapperclaw and Volcanicstar were the leader and deputy of WindClan. He could not hear what they were saying but by the looks on their face it was not good. He sat by the entrance and waited for Honeytail. Finally, he saw Honeytail coming up. He stood ready to go but Honeytail stopped him. "Robbinpaw wait!" Robbinpaw turned around expectantly. "What?" he asked a slight edge to his voice. "We can't do training today," she started, and he had a feeling it had something to do with why the WindClan leader and deputy were here. "We have to prepare for war against WindClan." She told him. "What? War?" Robbinpaw asked surprised. "Yes, war. We have to get the other apprentices and warriors ready." She explained. "I'm sorry Robbinpaw. Maybe tomorrow." He sighed. He watched Honeytail leave and soon stalked into the camp after her. He was just in time as Jake called a meeting. He barley listened. All he did was sit in the shadows of the bushes staring out the entrance of camp longingly. He heard only slight words. He caught the words war and new apprentice. At those words he looked up. "Robbinpaw step forward." Jake called. Robbinpaw sighed and stood up stepping a few paces ahead of the clan cats surrounding the leader's rock. "Robbinpaw! Robbinpaw!" the camp chanted loudly. He looked around proudly and saw green eyes watching from the shadows by a rock. He blinked and then saw the eyes were gone. He stared at the rock confused but then shook his head and looked back up at the rock. He bowed his head in respect though he did not mean it and went back to sitting in the shadows. He glanced up at the sky. The sun was setting, and he caught himself yawning. My first night in the apprentice den. He thought still not feeling very enthusiastic. He kept his head down and padded out from under the bush. He settled down in his next. The moss was softer than the nursery. He curled up tiredly. The den was empty now, but he knew it would not be like that for long. There were many nests and many apprentices. Before he could close his eyes, he heard a rustle in the brambles in the back of the den. He jerked his head around. He saw to his relief Ravenpaw. His brother Ravenpaw was made an apprentice earlier then him even though they were the same age. "Robbinpaw!" he exclaimed. Robbinpaw smiled. He had missed his brother in the nursery with him. He stood up and went to nuzzle his brother. Ravenpaw purred. "I'm glad your finally an apprentice." His brother teased. He shoved him playfully. His brother laughed. He shoved him back. They were acting like kits again. He closed his eyes remembering the memories they had had. Sadness flowed through him. If he followed through with the decision, he had made earlier then he would never be like this with his brother again. He pulled away. His brothers smile faded seeing his face. "Whats wrong?" Ravenpaw asked with a worried expression. "N-nothing..." he stammered. Ravenpaws face grew serious. "Whats wrong?" he repeated. Robbinpaw looked up. "It's Jake. He is nothing like Cloudstar. He's no leader." he finally spat. Ravenpaw looked at him directly in the eyes. "I know. I feel the same way." he said. "Really?" Robbinpaw asked surprised his brother shared his feelings. "Yes." "Jake has no place here in this messed up clan." Ravenpaw said as Robbinpaw nodded. "So, I've been thinking about something... what if we snuck out of the clan and asked to join WindClan?" Ravenpaw asked him. Robbinpaw almost gasped but then thought about it for a moment then realized it was a good plan. "Ok. When do we leave?" he asked. "Now." Ravenpaw answered. "Then we should get going before the other apprentices get back. Come on!" he led Ravenpaw out the crack Ravenpaw had come in through and the swam across the river out of camp. They bolted through the forest jumping over fallen trees and jagged rocks. The pair soon got worn out. Robbinpaw heard Ravenpaw call him over. He padded to Ravenpaw panting. "What is it?" he asked. "It's getting late and were getting tired. Let us sleep here for the night." He said pointing his muzzle in the direction of a cozy abandoned fox burrow. He nodded and they walked inside. They curled up together like how they used to be when they were kits and fell asleep.

He awoke to the light of dawn showing through the entrance of the den. He looked around the den, but he saw his brother was not there. he got up frantically and looked around outside. He felt a wave of relief wash over him as he saw his brother padding back with a fresh killed mouse in his jaws. "Here." His brother said nudging the mouse towards him. He and his brother shared the mouse then continued their journey to WindClan. When they got to the gorge, the border between clans, he looked over it in awe. The WindClan plains looked beautiful especially covered in the warm light of dawn. His brother pulled him back to reality when he meowed, "Were almost there." they padded along the side of the gorge towards the twoleg bridge ahead of them. He thought he heard Ravenpaw rasping as he breathed and turned to face him. "I'm fine." Ravenpaw said but his eyes gave away his lie. "Come on. Let us sit down." He urged his brother. "No, it's ok." Ravenpaw said but Robbinpaw knew for sure he was not. "Sit down." He repeated. Ravenpaw obeyed this time sitting down on a soft patch of grass. Robbinpaw looked him over then gasped when he saw a deep cut on the back of his neck. "What happened!?" he asked his brother with a worried look. But before Ravenpaw could answer he collapsed. "Ravenpaw!" he exclaimed rushing to his brother's side. He tried nudging him awake but he did not wake up. He needed a medicine cat, but they were too far from camp for him to leave his brothers side for a second. He tried to remember the herbs Ashfur had taught him for cuts when he would go out with him as a kit to collect herbs then he remembered he needed moss to wipe up the blood and cobwebs to stop the bleeding. But they were near neither of those herbs. He wailed his brother's name over and over tears prickling his cheeks, but he was dead. He knew that deep down but did not want to admit it. He was alone now.
