Chapter - 16
The next morning, Anamika woke up early, determined to get back to her routine. She knew that immersing herself in work was the only way to distract her mind from the storm of emotions she was battling. After getting ready in a simple yet elegant saree, she headed to the dining area where her in-laws were already seated for breakfast.
"Good morning, beta," Aarnav greeted warmly. "Are you heading to the office today?"
"Good morning, Papa. Yes, I have some pending work to finish," Anamika replied, forcing a smile.
"Take care of yourself. You don't have to push yourself too much," Sakshi said with concern, glancing at her daughter-in-law's slightly pale face.
Anamika nodded. "Don't worry, Ma. I'll be fine." She didn't mention anything about her trip to Delhi-meeting Ashok or Vineet was something she didn't want to talk about. She knew it would only bring back painful memories for her in-laws, and she didn't want to burden them with unnecessary worries.
After a quick breakfast, she left for her office. Once she arrived, her assistant greeted her with a warm smile. "Good morning, Ma'am. Welcome back."
"Morning, Neha. Bring me the pending files, please. I need to review them before the client meeting."
As she settled into her chair, she took a deep breath, trying to focus. Her office was her sanctuary-a place where she had built her identity, independent of anyone else. It reminded her of her strength, of how far she had come despite the odds. She opened her laptop and dived into work, pushing aside the memories of Delhi.
But no matter how hard she tried, Vineet's face kept flashing in her mind-the way he had looked at her when she was leaving the hotel, the elevator incident, the unspoken emotions in his eyes. Her hands trembled slightly as she tried to suppress the wave of pain rising within her.
"Stay strong, Anamika," she whispered to herself, clenching her fists. "You've made it this far. You can't fall apart now."
Anamika worked through the morning, keeping herself busy with back-to-back meetings and paperwork. Every time her mind drifted toward Vineet, she forced herself to focus harder. But it wasn't easy-his gaze, filled with something unspoken, kept haunting her.
By lunchtime, Neha entered her cabin with a tray of food. "Ma'am, I noticed you didn't take a break. Please have something. You need to take care of yourself."
Anamika offered a small smile. "Thank you, Neha. I'll eat in a while."
As Neha left, Anamika stared at the food absentmindedly. Her thoughts wandered back to the past-to the days when Vineet used to insist she never skipped a meal, especially during their busy schedules. His constant care and concern used to make her feel cherished back then. Now, the same memories felt like sharp thorns in her heart.
She sighed and pushed the tray aside, unable to eat. Just as she was about to return to her work, her phone buzzed. It was Ashok.
"Hello?" she answered, her voice neutral.
"Hey, Anamika. Just wanted to check if you reached safely."
"Yes, I did. Thank you, Ashok," she said politely, unsure of what else to say.
After a brief pause, Ashok asked hesitantly, "Did you and Vineet...talk about anything important?"
Anamika clenched her jaw. "No, Ashok. There's nothing left to talk about." Her voice was cold, and she wanted to end the conversation quickly. "I appreciate your concern, but I have to get back to work now."
Before Ashok could say more, she ended the call. She leaned back in her chair, closing her eyes for a moment. The conversation with Ashok only reminded her that no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't escape the shadows of her past.
Just then, a knock on the door pulled her out of her thoughts. It was Neha again. "Ma'am, Mr. Raman is here to meet you regarding the merger proposal."
Anamika straightened up and took a deep breath. "Send him in."
As Raman entered, she greeted him warmly, masking her inner turmoil with a professional demeanor. It was time to focus again-on her work, on her future, on the life growing inside her. She couldn't afford to let the past control her anymore.
Raman entered the cabin with a friendly smile. "Surprised to see me, Anamika?" he asked as he took a seat opposite her.
"Yes, I didn't expect you here in Bangalore. What brings you to this side of the world?" she replied, genuinely curious.
"I had a meeting with a client this morning, and since I knew you'd returned, I thought it would be a good opportunity to discuss our project." He leaned forward, his expression serious yet warm. "I want to start it on a special day-my daughter Roohi's birthday, which is in a couple of months. It feels symbolic, you know? Building something meaningful in her name."
Anamika's expression softened. "That's thoughtful, Raman. Roohi must mean a lot to you."
"She's my world," Raman said with a proud smile. "After the storm that hit my life in the past, Roohi became my strength, my reason to keep going. Everything I do is for her."
Touched by his words, Anamika nodded. "I understand. Let's finalize everything so we can start the project as planned. I'll have my team prepare a detailed timeline, and we can ensure everything aligns with Roohi's birthday."
"Perfect," Raman said, visibly relieved. "I knew I could count on you."
As they continued discussing the details, Anamika felt a sense of calm return. Raman's presence, his passion for his daughter, and his determination to create something meaningful reminded her that life goes on, no matter how many storms one faces.
Before leaving, Raman added, "By the way, I'm hosting a small party for Roohi's birthday. I'd love for you to come. It'll be good to take a break from work."
Anamika hesitated for a moment, then gave a small nod. "I'll try to be there."
"Great! I'll send you the details," Raman said with a smile before taking his leave.
As the door closed behind him, Anamika exhaled deeply. For a moment, she allowed herself to think about something other than her complicated past with Vineet. Life, she reminded herself, had to move forward-even if the shadows of yesterday lingered.
........
Anamika returned home, feeling slightly drained but more settled after her meeting with Raman. As she stepped into the house, the aroma of freshly brewed coffee greeted her.
"Aao beta," her mother-in-law, Shakshi, called from the kitchen. "I made some coffee. You must be tired from work."
Anamika smiled softly and walked toward the dining area. Shakshi placed a steaming cup of coffee in front of her. "You work too hard. You should take care of yourself, especially now," she said with concern, glancing at Anamika's barely visible baby bump.
"I'm fine, Ma," Anamika said reassuringly as she took a sip of the coffee. The warmth of the drink spread through her, comforting her after the long day.
"Still, you should slow down a bit. Let me know if you need anything. And remember, I'm here to take care of you," Shakshi added with a motherly smile.
Anamika nodded, grateful for the unexpected support. These were the same people who had once rejected her, but time had changed them, and now they welcomed her with open hearts.
As the evening rolled on, Anamika found herself momentarily at peace. Yet, deep down, memories of Vineet still lingered-his gaze, the unexpected kiss in the elevator, and the way he had let her leave without a word.
But for now, surrounded by warmth and care, she chose to push those thoughts aside, focusing on the present and her unborn child.
.....
At the dinner table, Shakshi placed a bowl of warm dal on the table while Anamika quietly served herself some rice. As they began eating, Anamika decided to share her plans.
"Ma, I need to let you know-I'll be flying to Singapore tomorrow evening for an important business meeting," she said, trying to sound casual.
Shakshi and Aarnav exchanged surprised glances. Shakshi put down her spoon, a look of concern clouding her face. "Singapore? Anamika, you're pregnant. Traveling this far isn't safe. Can't the meeting be postponed or done virtually?"
Anamika smiled gently, appreciating the concern but determined to explain. "Ma, I understand your worry, but this meeting is critical for finalizing a major deal. It can't be delayed. And don't worry-I'll be careful. It's just a one-day trip, and I'll have my team with me."
"But still..." Shakshi began, her voice laced with hesitation. "Your health should come first, beta. You've already been working so much."
"Ma, I promise I'll take care of myself. I won't exert too much. It's important for me to be there personally, and after this, I'll take it easy for a while," Anamika assured her, placing a hand on Shakshi's arm.
Aarnav spoke up, his tone supportive but concerned. "If you've decided, just be sure to prioritize your health. We trust your judgment, beta, but remember-nothing is more important than your well-being."
"I will, Papa," Anamika said softly, feeling touched by their care.
The conversation shifted to lighter topics, but Shakshi remained thoughtful throughout the meal. Later that night, as Anamika packed her things for the trip, she reflected on how life had taken such unexpected turns-once rejected by her in-laws, now lovingly cared for by them.
Still, despite their warmth, a sense of loneliness lingered. Anamika knew that no amount of support could fill the void Vineet had left in her heart, but for her unborn child, she resolved to stay strong.
To be continued...
