When Paige re-entered the Main Society Headquarters, Woojin was waiting at the door for her. He immediately shot up upon seeing her and ran to her side.
Outside, cameras flashed and reporters screamed for her attention but she gave them none. She never did and it was a surprise they still tried.
"How was the meeting?" Woojin asked, voice strained as he tried to focus on carrying a pile of papers and folders.
"Same as always. Anything new on my agenda?" She responded, pulling her hair out of a ponytail and fixing her pantsuit slightly. Her eyes fluttered to him as he searched through one of the files in his pile before pulling out a paper.
"It was an email I got earlier on. I decided to print it out so you could read it too."
Paige scanned the paper before meeting his gaze.
"From an unknown sender?"
He nodded.
"The content is what worries me the most."
Pausing for a moment to read the email, Paige instantly felt perturbed.
"Woojin," she uttered lowly. "Who have you been talking to recently?"
"Huh? What do you mean?"
Paige glared at him.
"Don't test me. Tell me now. Who have you been talking to without my knowledge?"
He gulped, fiddling with the papers in his hands.
"Well, there was a person who emailed me not long ago saying he knew where Lincoln was. I wanted to help you. Why? Is something wrong?"
"What was their name?"
"Their name? I... Uhm... I think it was Tom. Yeah, Tom."
"Full name?"
"He never mentioned."
"And why did you trust this person?"
"He mentioned things about you only someone who had worked beside you would know."
"Like?"
"Like how you play with your nose ring when you're thinking deeply, or tend to distance yourself when you've made a great discovery, and... There was more but I forgot it."
"Darn it!" She yelled, gaining some of the other workers' attentions.
"What? Is there something wrong with him?" He asked as he waved his hands at the workers, letting them know to get back to their work.
"How many times, Woojin? How many times do I have to tell you not to trust so easily?"
"I just wanted to help," he defended himself as they took a step into the elevator. He pressed the button for the fourth floor, the one with Paige's office. "Is he one of the people that betrayed the Society? Is he part of the Rebellion?"
"For starters, it's not a 'he', Tom is female. Thompson. Cassidy Thompson." Even just emitting the name, it was obvious how much Paige loathed her. She spat out the name as if it were poison and her face broke out into a grimace. Her eyes turned dark in fury and disgust but quickly turned back to their normal tired green when she exhaled a deep breath.
Woojin's eyes widened at the name. Paige, as much as she could, avoided speaking of anyone that had something to do with her losing her sister and her ex-lover. She avoided mentioning and contacting all except Kyla. There was something about her that made Paige trust her despite knowing trust is a flaw in the Society and might end up being the death of her.
But Cassidy was no doubt the biggest threat of all. To this day, no one knew what role she played or who she worked for, that is if she wasn't the leader of whatever she was doing.
As much as it killed her to say it, Cassidy, her sister's best friend, had become a bigger threat than Lily, the Head of the Rebellion.
"I-" Woojin started but Paige cut him off as soon as the elevator opened up and she exited it
"I know, you were just trying to help. I have a lot on my place, yes, but if anything comes up, tell me. You are still a rookie at your job and I don't expect you to be able to work on your own case, got it? The Society belongs to me just as much as it does to you. One screw up, and you can send this place down in flames."
He gulped, dealing bad for his actions and going behind her back. Paige had a lot to deal with and with all the people skillful enough to help her, all around the world -- either missing or on missions -- or untrustworthy, she was forced to face it all alone.
Her hand wrapped around her office door handle while she sighed. His footsteps began to fade as he entered his own office with a groan.
"Got it?" She repeated after him, her voice softer, letting him know she meant well with her words and that she really did appreciate him and his attempt to clear her plate.
He stayed silent for a while before his voice came out, weak and full of guilt.
"Got it."
She turned her door handle and stepped into her office. Closing the door behind her, she leaned against it and exhaled a loud, frustrated sigh.
"Good afternoon," a voice came from her office chair. Her eyes snapped open and she stared at the boy who sat at her desk with his feet on top of all her papers.
He wore a light gray hoodie that covered part of his messy, jet black hair and a pair a blue jeans over his long legs. A slight smile danced over his pink, plump lips and the sun shone through the window and directly on his face. His eyes were shut while he wore an expression of utter bliss.
Paige scowled.
"That's a murder case you're using as a foot rest," she stated, throwing the paper Woojin had given her on her desk. "And if you keep your feet there, there may be another murder case.
Donghyun chuckled, pulling his feet down to the ground and opened his eyes. His smile remained.
"Where have you been? I've been waiting ages."
Paige noticed the open window in the corner of her room and a rope that ran out of it. She cocked an eyebrow.
"You can just come in through the door you know. Why bother abseiling?"
"I didn't feel like it. What's the thrill of breaking in if I can just walk in?"
"You aren't breaking in, you idiot. I invited you in."
"I wouldn't use that kind of language to refer to me. I'm not very forgiving but I'll let that one slide because I pity you. For your information, I like breaking into places. It gives me a sense of purpose. Walking into places doesn't do justice for me. Now answer my question."
"Your question?"
"Where have you been?"
"I don't need to tell you that. That is information for the Society and Society alone."
He leaned closer to her, hands intertwined together as he gave her his best superior tone.
"Is it? Is it really?" He pushed the chair further from the desk and crossed his left leg over his right. "Or is it supposed to be Society information that you keep a secret because you no longer trust the Society."
She sighed, glaring at him.
"Get off my chair," was all she managed to say.
He raised his hands up in mock surrender and allowed her to take his place on the chair.
"I'm not judging you, Paige. I would never judge a Head of Society's decisions... At least, not out loud. I find your ways... Impressive, if I may say. You really impress me."
She scoffed.
"Stop trying to get something out of me. I know your kind."
"Just as I know yours. We are two powerful types. Together, we could do a lot."
Paige narrowed her eyes at him in suspicion as she leaned forward. Her eyes searched for an answer in his dark, mysterious eyes. All the intelligence and strength he hid behind the two dreamy orbs that she wished she had the power to see through. Donghyun wasn't just a pretty face as everyone thought of him. Each word, each syllable that slips off his lips are carefully thought out. He was one of the best at investigating and misleading in the area. A skill he possessed that very few noticed.
"Why did you agree to join me? Why did you take up this deal?"
He shrugged.
"How could I say no to such a price?"
"You didn't do it just for the money, Donghyun. You never do."
The grin on this face that faltered slightly seemed to confirm her statement. He exhaled slowly before giving her one of his rare intense, serious stares.
"Let's just say," he uttered, his voice trailing off as if he was thinking deeply about his actual purpose behind agreeing. "I could benefit from the final result too."
