Chapter 21: Jack's and Cupid's Memories

Once Pitch left, Baby Tooth yanked on Jack's hood to get him to wake up, which worked. She then pointed to an unconscious Cupid.

"Cupid!" he called, rushed to her, and asked as she started waking up, "You all right?"

"Yeah. I'm alright," she nodded as he helped her sit up.

He then gently pulled her close to him, but she shivered a bit, making him pull his arms back a little.

"Sorry. All I can do is keep you cold," Jack apologized.

"I don't care," Cupid smiled.

She gently took his arm and draped it over her before snuggling up to him. Jack smiled a bit before it was replaced by a frown and sad sigh.

"Pitch was right. I make a mess of everything," he stated.

"No. You don't," Cupid remarked, faced him, then continued, "Jack, I've never met someone who was willing to give up something that meant a lot to him for me. I would do the same for you in a heartbeat."

Jack showed a hint of a smile at her kind words.

"Thanks," Jack said.

"You're welcome," Cupid told him.

Then Baby Tooth went into Jack's hoodie pocket.

"Hey," he whispered.

Jack and Cupid looked at each other before sighing and resting their foreheads against each other. But then the two separate female voices sounded.

"Jack?" the first one called, catching Jack's attention.

"Jack!" the other, which sounded like Cupid, did the same, catching her attention.

"Oh!" they exclaimed, jumping back, before Jack reached into his pocket.

"Jack!" both voices sounded as he pulled out both memories.

They looked at each other in confusion before Cupid joined him by his side and he handed her memories to her.

"You got my memories before Pitch gave you yours?" Cupid asked.

"Yeah. You deserved to know more of why you were here more than me," Jack answered.

She smiled then wondered, "Is that why Pitch denied having my memories?"

"Yeah. Sorry," he apologized.

"Don't be," Cupid told him then said, "You ready to see if Pitch was right about our memories connecting us?"

"I am," Jack nodded.

They then activated them, held hands, and relived the memories before them.

They saw themselves, as people, but instead of white and pink hair, they both had brown hair. They were best friends, goofing off, playing pranks on people, telling funny stories, and going ice skating.

Then it showed when Jack and a little girl were on thin ice while a girl around Jack's age was at the edge of the pond.

"It's okay. It's okay. Don't look down. Just look at me," Jack assured.

"You're good," the woman added.

"Jack. Jamie. I'm scared," the girl said as the ice started cracking from under her.

"I know. I know. But you're gonna be all right. You're not gonna fall in. We're gonna have a little fun instead!" Jack assured.

"No, we're not!" the girl, Mary, exclaimed.

"Would I trick you?" Jack asked.

"Yes! You always play tricks!" Mary pointed out.

"She's got a point," the woman, Jamie, added, making Jack give her a teasing glare.

"Remind me why you don't have something useful to keep you warm," Jack stated.

"Remind me why you're barefoot in the winter," Jamie intercepted, making Mary laugh a bit.

"You win," Jack decided then assured his sister, "Well, I'm not playing tricks this time. I promise, I promise. You're gonna be...You're gonna be fine. You have to believe in me."

Mary took a shaky breath.

"You want to play a game?" Jack asked.

"How about hopscotch?" Jamie suggested.

"Yeah! Like we play every day. It's as easy as one...Whoa!" Jack started as he stepped, went off balance to make her laugh, which worked, then continued, jumping to safety, "Two. Three! All right."

He then reached down and grabbed a stick with a hook-like end.

"Now it's your turn. One..." he said she started forward then continued, grabbing her at the end, "That's it, that's it. Two. Three!"

"Whoa!" Mary exclaimed as she was on thicker ice.

"You did it!" Jamie cheered.

Jack laughed a bit until he fell under the ice.

"Jack!" both girls shouted.

And that was when Jack's transformation started happening, to where he went from brown hair to white and from brown eyes to blue.

Meanwhile, the girls went to the hole, looking for Jack.

"Jamie! What are we going to do?" Mary asked in a panic.

"I'll go get him," Jamie assured.

Before Jamie could jump in, she saw a hunter aiming his bow and arrow at a deer that was in their cross range. The hunter let the arrow fly, but it missed the deer, heading straight for Mary.

"Look out!" Jamie yelled, pushing her out of the way and the arrow piercing her heart.

"Jamie!" Mary shouted.

Then the moon shone on Jamie as her hair went from brown to pink and her eyes opened to still be blue.

Then Jack and Cupid gasped and they were back in Antarctica with Baby Tooth looking at them.

"Did you see...Did you see that?" Jack asked, Baby Tooth shook her head, then he went on while picking Baby Tooth up and Cupid let out a shocked breath, "It was me! I had a family! I had a sister! Cupid and I saved her!"

"That's why you chose us," Cupid said as she and Jack looked up.

"We're Guardians," Jack added.

Then Jack and Cupid looked at each other in realization.

"We were best friends," they breathed then hugged.

"You were really brave, saving your sister the way you did," Cupid said.

"You were too," Jack responded, they parted, then he asked, "What was it that you saved her from?"

"A rogue arrow from hunting. I must've been buried in the snow when you were brought back," Cupid answered.

"And you would've gone in the water to save me?" he asked.

"W-Well, yeah," she answered then explained before trailing off, "To be honest, it was more than just friendship that made me want to dive in to save you and your sister. I saw her as a little sister while I saw you as..."

"More than a friend," Jack finished for her.

Cupid nodded, looking away. He smiled gently and got her to look at him, moving stray hairs behind her ear.

"It was and still is the same with me," he said.

"Really?" she asked,

"Yeah," he nodded.

They then started leaning toward each other before Baby Tooth squeaked at them to remind them they needed to go.

"Oh yeah. We have to get out of here," Jack said.

"Okay," Cupid nodded.

He then gabbed both halves of his staff and tried to get it to connect, Cupid and Baby Tooth watched in hope. But the first time, it didn't work, making Jack sigh.

"You two should go on ahead of me," Jack told Cupid and Baby Tooth.

"I'm not leaving you here," Cupid disagreed while Baby Tooth shook her head.

"Alright," Jack shrugged.

He stood up and tried to attach both ends again. This time, the middle glowed a bright blue before starting to mend the staff back together, making them all smile. Then they took off out of there and cheered as they flew.

"Come on, you guys, I owe you both!" Jack told them.

"We'll remember that!" Cupid joked, making Jack laugh, and they flew for Pitch's lair.

A/N Yay! They got their memories back! And so close yet so far on the kiss! AHH! By the way, when I looked up some characters' names for this, it said Jack's sister's name was Mary.
