Chapter 11: Pitch Taking the Fairies
They made it there to see Tooth Palace overrun by Nightmares.
"What?" North questioned.
They zipped past some, seeing exactly what they were doing.
"They're taking the tooth fairies!" Jack realized.
This kept going until Jack noticed one about to be captured, so he quickly flew up and saved her before returning to the sleigh.
"Hey, little Baby Tooth, you okay?" Jack asked, to which Baby Tooth nodded thankfully.
Cupid took some out as North prepared himself.
"Here, take over," North said, holding the reigns out to Jack.
"Huh?" Jack asked, but took the reigns.
"Oh man," Cupid commented.
"Yah!" Jack yelled, yanking the reigns.
North took out some as well with his swords. Cupid took out another, the little boxes of teeth falling into the sleigh.
"They're stealing the teeth!" Bunny said.
Sandy then noticed black sand, which confused him.
"Jack, look out!" Cupid warned.
Jack stopped the sleigh in time. Tooth then flew out in a panic.
"Tooth! Are you all right?" North asked.
"They...they took my fairies. And the teeth! All of them! Everything is gone. Everything," Tooth said sadly as the others except Jack and Cupid went to her.
Then Baby Tooth came out from behind Jack and flew up to her.
"Oh, thank goodness. One of you is all right," Tooth smiled, holding the fairy in her hands.
"I have to say, this is very, very exciting. The Big Four, all in one place. I'm a little starstruck," Pitch remarked, appearing above them, then added, making North realize what he did, "Did you like my show on the Globe, North? Got you all together, didn't I?"
"Pitch! You have got 30 seconds to return my fairies!" Tooth threatened, flying at him.
"Or what? You'll stick a quarter under my pillow?" Pitch mocked from another area of the palace.
"She gives you a quarter without taking a tooth, you don't take the quarter," Cupid said to Jack, making him nod.
"Why are you doing this?" North asked.
"Maybe I want what you have. To be believed in," Pitch answered, making Cupid and Jack silently gasp, then Pitch continued, "Maybe I'm tired of hiding under beds!"
"Maybe that's where you belong!" Bunny remarked.
"Go suck an egg, rabbit," Pitch retorted from below them, disappeared before Bunny could grab him, then asked with a chuckle, "Hang on. Is that Jack Frost and Cupid? Since when are you all so chummy?"
"We're not," Jack answered.
"Oh, good. A neutral party. Then I'm going to ignore you. But you must be used to that by now," Pitch said then wondered, "But what about pretty little Cupid over here?"
"Don't call me that and proud to know them," Cupid snapped.
"Well then, why aren't you one of them? Oh of course. I can taste your fear of disappearing and no one remembering you," Pitch smirked.
"Pitch, you shadow-sneaking ratbag, come here!" Bunny yelled, charging at him before he disappeared.
He then reappeared above them. Tooth grabbed one of Bunny's boomerangs and advanced to attack him, but stopped when a Nightmare appeared in front of her.
"Whoa! Hey! Easy, girl, easy," Pitch eased then replied, "Look familiar, Sandman? Took me a while to perfect this little trick. Turning dreams into Nightmares. Don't be nervous. It only riles them up more. They smell fear, you know."
"What fear? Of you? No one's been afraid of you since the Dark Ages!" Bunny scoffed as Tooth handed his boomerang back to him.
"Oh, the Dark Ages. Everyone frightened. Miserable. Such happy times for me. Oh, the power I wielded. But then the Man in the Moon chose you to replace my fear with your wonder and light. Lifting their hearts and giving them hope. Meanwhile, everyone wrote me off as just a bad dream! 'Oh, there's nothing to be afraid of.' 'There's no such thing as the Boogeyman!' Well, that's all about to change," Pitch explained.
Then they noticed parts of Tooth Palace dissipating into dust.
"Oh, look. It's happening already," Pitch chuckled.
"What is?" Jack asked.
Tooth gasped a bit in shock at what was happening.
"Children are waking up and realizing the Tooth Fairy never came. I mean, such a little thing. But to a child..." Pitch said.
"What's going on?" Jack wondered.
"They...They don't believe in me anymore," Tooth answered.
"Didn't they tell you, Jack? It's great being a Guardian. But there's a catch. If enough kids stop believing, everything your friends protect, wonder, hopes and dreams, it all goes away. And little by little, so do they. Which is why Cupid isn't ready to become a Guardian. The irony," Pitch explained.
Cupid hugged herself in nervousness, which Jack noticed and put a comforting arm around her in response.
"No Christmas or Easter or Valentine's Day or little fairies that come in the night. There will be nothing but fear and darkness. And me. It's your turn not to be believed in," Pitch continued.
Bunny then threw a boomerang at him, but he dodged them. The others attacked him as he rode on a Nightmare to escape them. Bunny even threw Easter egg bombs while Cupid shot some of her arrows at him, but he escaped. The Guardians landed at a small creek, looking around for any sign of Pitch.
"He's gone," North said.
