Chapter 4: New Alliances
The group woke up in Area 51, a vast, complex, underground facility. All of the energy shard users were taken to a top-secret base hidden several miles below the surface.
While still unconscious, they were put in tanks, hooked up to different wires in various parts of their bodies, and submerged under water. The four victims were separated into different rooms. Each person had a specific test conducted in their room. Scientists from around the world were brought in to observe each test subject closely, so that they could learn as much as possible.
The group of doctors that were selected were considered the world's most intelligent doctors. Frank Lakers was an American doctor known for his space travels to other planets and alien life studies. Lu King was from China. His space pods had traveled to other galaxies, allowing scientists everywhere greater access to the secrets of the universe. A Russian doctor named Wilson Mikhail was the first doctor to start mixing nuclear chemicals with machinery weapons. Luigi Pierre, from Italy, was most well-known for his incredibly successful and enlightening trip to Saturn. Isabella Green, a British doctor, had made a name for herself by traveling to space multiple times and studying the plant life on other planets.
The first test subject was a woman named Diana Rose. The doctors already knew that Diana could grow plants from the palms of her hands. This allowed her to control the growth of plants around her.
Doctor Green stepped into the room and observed Diana from a distance. She'd been amazed when she heard about a woman that could grow plants from her hands, and had studied everything she could find out about Diana since then.
All of the doctors stopped and gazed at the woman in the tank, hooked up to an air mask with various wires around her body. They couldn't look away as they watched plants growing on all of the wires. The plants danced together in perfect harmony with the water as it moved around her.
"Why do you think this is happening?" Dr. Lakers asked, turning to Dr. Green. They all knew she was most interested in this test subject.
"I don't know yet," she said, as she examined the body with a magnifying glass. "But I have my suspicions."
They watched her, as she narrowed her focus on Diana's stomach. It looked like she wore a diamond bellybutton ring. Yet there was a slight glow to it.
"A shard," Green said. "I think it gives her the ability to grow anything she wishes with her touch. We'll need to extract a plant from the tank for further testing to try to figure out how all this works."
A short while later, Dr. Lakers brought out a small drone. He sent it in through the top of the tank and submerged it under the water. It propelled itself down the tank and cut a small piece off of the first plant it neared. Then it returned to the platform in the middle of the room.
All of the doctors were anxious to get their hands on any new information, but Dr. Green took the lead. She snatched up the sample and brought it under a microscope. All of the other doctors crowded around her.
"It's certainly something I've never seen before in my life," Doctor Green said, shocked as she wrote down her findings. "Not on any planet I've ever studied."
"I prepared for something like this," Dr. Mikhail piped up. "I've been working on different chemicals to narrow down the best ones we can use to get more information during these tests. Why don't I try a simple one out?"
Everyone looked at the doctor with alarm. They all respected each other, but there was no one they trusted more than themselves. Colleagues included.
"I wouldn't advise it," Dr. Green said. "This is all so new and she's already showing exceptional power. Just look at her rapid plant growth! We can't be sure yet of what she's capable of."
Mikhail ignored them, used to being the leader in his own lab. He was far too smart to have people doubting him like this. They just didn't understand the extensive testing he'd done.
He grabbed a tube from his coat pocket and walked up to the tank.
"Just a little bit. It won't hurt her, I promise."
Before he could drop the liquid into the tank, Diana's shard started to glow a bright green that lit up the whole room. It was so bright it temporarily blinded everyone in the room for a couple of seconds.
"Is everyone alright?" Lakers asked, as he stumbled and tried to catch his balance.
Once everyone could see again, all eyes turned to Dr. Mikhail who was on the floor. His tube lay broken near him, bubbling and melting a hole through the tile. It looked like some kind of acid. Something deadly.
"Why would you do that?" Green yelled. "Look at that poison! I told you it was dangerous!"
"I'm sorry," Mikhail said, as he got up from the floor. His face paled and his body shook. He looked as surprised as the rest of them. "I didn't know it'd do that. I must've grabbed the wrong tube."
"The wrong tube!" That sent Green off on another tirade.
But since he looked so distraught, no one really questioned what was in the tube melting the facility floor. They assumed he made a mistake. A horrible, stupid mistake.
As soon as the scientists finished their tests on Diana, they moved onto their next test subject. She waited in another, secured room. Trapped in a big, glass tank. They all walked up to the tank so that they could examine Erika Snipe.
After so careful observation, Dr. Mikhail left Erika to set up his things on the workstation at the opposite end of the room. He laid out the different tubes he'd brought with him.
"Which one should I use?" Mikhail said aloud. "The most obvious choice clearly wasn't the answer.
"Hey, doctor don't you think we should try a different approach to this subject?" Doctor King suggested.
"You're right," Mikhail admitted. "I've been working on a new invention that can send an electromagnetic chemical pulse. Her reaction should be enlightening."
"This guy really is a mad scientist, isn't he?" Lakers mumbled under his breath.
Yet none of the other doctors had any better ideas, and Mikhail was the most experienced in the group. Plus of course, outward confidence does wonders. He quickly set up his instruments before anyone could object to the test.
As Mikhail was preparing, Dr. Pierre noticed two small diamonds on Erica's wrists that had a light purple glow.
"Hey," he said. "You guys should come take a look at this."
"They look like the shards that were on Diana," Dr. Green noted.
"Yes," Pierre said. "But all of the other cases we've seen have possessed one shard. She has two."
Before the doctors could finish examining the shards, Dr. Mikhail finished completing his pulse machine. He set it up to the tank and ran to the back of the room.
"It might safer if you guys move back," he warned. No one paid attention to him though and he was getting a little tired of their attitude. So, he just shrugged it off.
As he began the pulse test, the glass on the tank started to vibrate vigorously. Erika's diamonds began to pulsate by themselves. All of the scientists took a step back as the tank began to glow purple. Seconds later, a bright flash of purple light blinded everyone in the room.
Mikhail stopped the test, but not before a second flash could assault everyone's still recovering eyes.
"This is ridiculous!" Dr. Green yelled. "Who let this crazy scientist into this facility?"
"Hey," Lakers said, as he lightly touched her shoulder. "Calm down, doctor. None of us know what we're doing here. Mistakes will be made. He's just as brilliant as everyone else here, he's just has some unorthodox methods."
The doctors did some more tests, made more observations, and wrote down their conclusions. They then moved onto the next test subject, Mark Towers, who already worked with the government. After his capture, he voluntarily subjected to the test so that he could enhance his powers.
The doctors stared in awe at the man that could disappear into thin air. Soon they realized that Mark also had two shards, on each ankle. Mikhail went to the front of the tank, dazed by the blue aura coming from Mark's ankles.
"I have the perfect chemical to mix with his shards," Dr. Mikhail said.
"No!" Everyone shouted.
"Wait a minute," Dr. King said. "He might be onto something. I was recently testing a new chemical with Mark and I told him about the test I wanted to perform on him."
The doctors debated this before ultimately deciding that they should put the chemicals into the tank to mix with Mark's shards. As soon as they let the concentrated liquid into the tank, the water began to bubble rapidly. Marks shards started to blink a bright, royal blue.
All of the scientists stopped and jotted down some notes. They studied and analyzed Mark enough to understand him more than the other energy shard users. So, they were sure this new liquid would enhance Mark's powers. They finished the tests and moved on to the next room.
The next subject was Ace, who the government scientists knew nothing about. They all paused to look over Ace's body and attributes.
"It seems like this subject has one shard right above his heart," Pierre said.
All of the doctors started to notice Ace's shard was a little bigger than the other test subjects so far. They examined his shard with great detail. Dr. Pierre took out different instruments and tools to better examine the subject.
"So, I know you don't like my chemicals, but can we PLEASE try my newest invention?" Dr. Mikhail pleaded.
Everyone stopped and stared at Mikhail. They went through his credentials in their minds. Considered how and why Doctor Mikhail actually got approved to join the elite group of doctors. Debated if they should trust him.
Eventually, he talked them into letting him perform the same pulsating test that was used previously on the last subject to see how his shard would react. They flipped the switches. The tank began to shake. A long pause went off in the room as Ace started to become enraged.
"Oh no," Mikhail said, as if he hadn't caused this. "He doesn't look so happy."
Ace's face displayed a furious scowl and his shard began to glow a bright red.
"Doctor Pierre stop the test," Lakers said. "I think we might have a problem."
A large boom followed his words as a huge, red pulse banged throughout the room and sent everyone flying back. Pierre stopped the machine before things could get more out of hand. The scientists stood in shock and in fear.
"I think it's safe to assume Ace is nothing like the other test subjects," Pierre said.
The scientists came to the conclusion that Ace's shard craved anger, which they hadn't seen in any of the other subjects so far. They decided to postpone further tests for now. Moved onto their last test subject, Christopher Spark.
The scientists entered the room to see a huge man with a large shard. They all stared in amazement at Spark's shard.
"This has to be the biggest shard of all the energy shard users," said Lakers.
"I have the perfect chemical..." Glares cut off Mikhail's big idea.
"How about we try one of my new inventions," Laker's suggested. "It sends out a little bit of electricity in a pulse ray. A bit safer than what we've done so far."
They all got protective gear this time after the last few disasters. They suspected something crazy might happen, but they were also excited to see the results.
Three...
Two....
One...
The counted down in unions and flipped the switch. A light pulsating shock went through the wires and shook the tank.
"It's happening again," Pierre said. "Watch out!"
Spark's body absorbed the electricity as it flowed it throughout his veins. The shard started to shine a white, bright light which blinded everyone for a couple of seconds.
"I can't seeeee," Dr. Mikhail screamed. In a panic, the doctor started to trip over various objects in the room. He tumbled into the wall and fell to the floor.
The glass tank burst open, sending glass flying everywhere. Spark flew out of the tank as all the wires disconnected from him. He fell to the ground in front of the tank.
They all gather around him and stared at the strongest of all of the energy shard users. Spark immediately passed out of exhaustion and was taken to a private room where he recovered after a couple of hours.
He woke up from a terrible nightmare in which he was in a thunderstorm and got shocked by lighting. After a few sleep moments, he realized he didn't know where he was. Saw the general that imprisoned him and his comrades.
"Hey, Spark," the general said. "Relax, I don't want to fight you. I'm here because I know we can form a strong alliance with the energy shard users."
"What do we get for doing this?" Spark asked.
The government offered Spark and the other energy shard users the ability to be free, so long as they form a team and perfect their abilities. This would form a new, breath-taking alliance never seen before. And who better than Spark, the strongest energy shard user, to lead the team?
That night, Spark and the general worked out the responsibilities of the team as well as the freedom that they would receive. Spark was informed that there were other energy shard users alive, but only a few of them could actually control their powers.
Some of the people that got struck by the shards that night were consumed by the shard. Many others were instantly killed. The government brought anyone with a shard here to area 51 and contained them until they could find a better use for them. They came up with a solution and called it a night.
