Chapter 1>The Big Four
Jack Frost-
I'm sliding over tree branches and letting the wind carry me towards the ground from time to time so I can blast a sheet of ice or a blanket of snow. Then I hit the ground and run at super speed across a big pond, frosting it over. I'm about to speed over another set of trees when I see a hole open up beneath me. Before I can curse Bunnymund, I fall through the darkness.
{*}
"What's wrong with you? I have a job to do, Kangaroo!" I yell the second I see Bunnymund when I pop into North's Globe Room.
" 'Ey mate, this is serious business."
"I'll be the judge of that!"
"No, I will," North's voice boomed above me. I look up and only manage to catch the ends of his beard in my nose. I instantly double over in a sneeze.
"Bless you!" Tooth chirps.
"Thanks," I mutter. Then I stop myself and look around. I notice Sandman walking behind North toward the Globe. "Wait, everyone's here. What's wrong?"
North gives me a sad look. "Good news or bad news first?" he asks.
"Bad news."
"Pitch is back."
"What?! How?"
"He had reinforcements. It's not just him, Jack. There are other dark forces at hand."
"Who?"
"We don't know yet."
"Okay," I say slowly. "The good news?"
Now North seems to smile. "The Man in Moon sent a message!"
"What message?" I'm a little startled by his joyous expression. North holds up a finger and starts digging through one of the big pockets in his overalls. Finally, he produced a small, folded up piece of paper. He unfolded it and handed it to me. I give him a curious look and then looked at the paper. It seemed to be a letter written in silver ink. It said:
'Dear Guardians,
There are three new Guardians joining you. One of you will be bonded with them to make The Big Four. You will know who when they arrive. They are powerful enough to stop the new evil that is threatening the children of the world. They will be opening their own portals at nine pm tonight.
Good luck.'
And then there was some type of silver stamp that looked like a full moon. Man in the Moon's signature probably.
"I don't get it. I thought you guys were the big four."
"Apparently not, mate. Moon Man made it pretty clear that there are three new guardians who will be joining one of us. They'll be arriving in half an hour." Bunnymund said. I looked up at the giant clock and realized he was right.
"So now what do we do? Wait for them to arrive?"
"Yes," everyone said while Sandman nodded.
"Okay." I propped myself on top of my staff, placed my hands in my hoodie's pocket, and began humming some tunes. Everyone did their own things.
{*}
After about a while, the full moon glowed brightly and cast its light over the Guardian sundial on the floor. I stepped off my staff and stared as it began to shimmer.
"This is it."
Rapunzel~
I was just singing to myself in my room while I brushed my hair and reread one of my books (again). My mother left a while ago and now I was stuck brushing my overlong hair, trying to sort out tangles all by myself.
It was like deja vu with us today. She came, talked about her travels, warned me about the world again, made hazelnut soup, made me sing the song to activate my hair, I told her about the floating lights again, she refused and lectured again, and then she said sorry, promised me more paint seashells, said goodnight, and left me in my tower, all by myself.
Again!
I mean seriously! I kept telling her that she can come along and protect me, but she still refused. I think she's hiding something from me. I don't know what, but her excuses are old news and I'm old enough to realize that something bigger was out there. Something she-- for some reason!-- can't have me see.
Tired, I sit on the floor, strands of my hair falling on top of painting of the full moon. Something seems to tell me to sing. I don't know what, but I do anyway.
"Flower, gleam and glow. Let, your power shine. Make the clock reverse; bring back what once was mine.
Heal what has been hurt. Change the fate's design. Save what has been lost, bring back what once was mine.
What once was mine..."
As I sang, the moon painting my hair was on began to glow. Suddenly, a bright red panel of light sparkled in front of me. It morphed and seemed to portray a picture of a workshop. I grabbed the frying pan I always keep under my bed for protection and slipped it into the panel of light. It looked like it was reappearing in the picture.
Hesitantly, I stepped through.
Merida~
It was dinner time. My brothers were fighting over the honey buns again while I just ate hickory ham, mashed potatoes, and sautéed vegetables.
My dad was complaining about the Vikings from Berk again, who kept riding their dragons in and almost burning up the forest. However, their leader Stoik was with them today.
"I already told the man I wasn't interested, and neither was me daughter, about the marriage alliance with his son," my father fumed. This got my attention.
"WHAT?!" My mother and I yelled in unison.
While I was saying, "Why would he ask such a thing? He knows I'm not getting married!" My mother was saying, "Why would you say no? His son is the first suitor since Merida has said no to marriage!"
Then I turned on my mother. "What is that supposed to mean? I thought we agreed on no marriage until I'm good and ready after that witch turned you to a bear!"
"Yes, but are you honestly still not ready? Who knows! You might like the boy!!!"
"But mum-"
"No! I will not hear of this any longer!"
I slammed my palms against the table, making dishes rattle, and stood up so fast, my chair roughly slid back and hit the wall on the far end of the dining room.
"FINE!" I shrieked and ran out, grabbing my bow and arrow quiver. I heard my mum yelling at me to come back, but I kept stomping toward the stables. I let Angus loose, jumped on top of his ready saddle, and told him to start going for the woods.
{*}
Angus and I reached the Callanish Stones. I walked into the middle of the circle and noticed that the stone that broke from my mother's attack was somehow repaired.
"Will of the Wisps?" I called. Nothing. "I could really use some help in my fate right now! Please?" Still nothing. I sat down in a huff. I looked back and noticed Angus staring at something. I followed his gaze and saw a Will of the Wisp floating between two pillars on the other end of the circle. I then stood up and walked toward it. I waited for it to disappear and then reappear further away, but it didn't. Confused I walked closer. I reached my hand out and it still didn't disappear.
Then it became even more confusing when I actually touched it. It glowed brighter and grew bigger. It seemed to be showing me the image of a workshop. I put my hand in the image and it suddenly began pulling me further in. I couldn't scream. I looked back and saw Angus running toward me.
The last thing I saw was the full moon glowing big.
Hiccup-
Toothless and I were sailing through the skies. The breeze picked up my hair and sent a nice forest smell to my nose. I turned my metal foot forward as we dived down. When we landed, I cheered and Toothless bounced happily. I then slid my way down to the ground and petted Toothless's side. When I settled Toothless into his barn, I walked toward my mansion/house/castle (I still don't know what it is). I got inside, and before I could call out that I'm home, I hear Astrid's angry voice.
"--wrong! Your son loves me, Stoik! Why would you tell King Fergus about a marriage between Hiccup and his daughter?!"
"Astrid, my son does not love you! You two are barely courting each other!" I agreed with my dad the same time I wanted to punch him. I'm sure I love Astrid, but we only shared one kiss, and it didn't look like she wanted anything serious.
"How can you say that? Hiccup and I are together!" No we weren't. "What do you mean we're not dating?"
"For one there wasn't one time that my son has told me, 'Dad, I'm going to meet up with Astrid!' And he always tells me the plan for his days before stepping out of this mansion!" So it's a mansion!
"But--"
"No! Please leave my court, Astrid."
"BUT--"
"NOW!" My father boomed at last. And I heard stomping footsteps coming towards the hallway, where I was standing. I quickly backed up a little and then began walking at a leisurely pace when Astrid stormed out of the courtroom.
"Hey, Ash! I just got back. You wanna--"
"Not now, Hiccup." Astrid muttered angrily and shoved her way past me. Honestly, after that fight she had with my father, I thought she would kiss me and tell me to pack my bags so we can run away together. But that didn't happen. And it made me angry. Before I can say something snappy, Astrid had left the building.
My dad walked out of the courtroom and looked at me. His usual scowl turned to a smile.
"Hi son! Is the metal leg working any better?"
"Hey dad. Yeah actually. I'm a lot more used to it now."
"Good! Ready for dinner?"
"Yeah sure. I'm going to stop by at my hut first."
"Alright, I'll see you at the table."
"Okay." I walked back out and went to my hut. In there were my inventions and drawings. I sat down at my chair and looked at my surroundings. It's been a while since I was in here. It got a little dusty over time. Boy, have I missed it!
When I opened my tiny window, the full moon let in some beautiful light on my drawings. Suddenly one of my drawings glowed. It was so strange, I leaned in closer.
And fell through.
Jack-
Next thing I know I'm being thrown across the Globe Room. All I know is that there was weight and bodies on me.
"Get off!" I yelled, and weight began shifting instantly.
Rapunzel~
My hair was being tugged here and there. It was painful! I sat up when I heard some boy yell, "Get off!" I tried tumbling away as soon as he said it. When I got space from the dog pile, I noticed I was now standing in the workshop I saw.
And there was a pale boy with piercing, icy, blue eyes and white hair. He was handsome! But the weird thing was, he was floating in mid air and holding a hooked and crooked, wooden staff at us. And by us I meant a girl with big, bushy red hair and passion-filled blue eyes and a boy with shaggy brown hair, forest green eyes, and a metal leg. The pale boy noticed a strand of my hair caught in the hook of his staff. He looked at it with curiosity and picked it up.
"Hair....?" he muttered and followed the hair with his eyes until it seemed to disappear behind a big, metal globe thingy that had twinkling lights all over it. And apparently now my hair too. The red-haired girl notched an arrow in her bow and pointed it at the brunette boy, who was only trying to help her up.
"Where am I?" The girl demanded.
"Welcome to--" the pale boy started to say while a large man with long white hair and beard who smelled like peppermint. I couldn't help interrupting with:
"Santa Claus, you're real? Then how come you're in the book 'Myths & Legends' by Sara G. Quibble?"
"I'd rather be called North," Santa-- oops, er North-- said with a Russian accent. "And what's your name?"
"Rapunzel, sir."
"I'm Bunnymund, the Easter bunny." said a very tall rabbit with an Australian accent.
"I'm Tooth fairy, but you can call me Tooth for short." said a girl who seemed to have green feathers all over her body and thin, fluttering pink wings. Then there was tap on my shoulder. I turned to see a short, yellow-orange man who poured sand in my lap.
"Sand?" He nodded. Then pointed at himself. "Man?" He nodded again. He used more sand to spell 'Sandy' on the floor. "I can call you Sandy for short?" He nodded excitedly.
"And I'm Jack, Jack Frost." I turned my head up to the pale boy-- oops again! Jack-- who leaned down and helped me stand up. "So, Rapunzel. Do you know who they are?" I turned to the unknown boy and girl who were now slowly making their way to the group. I shook my head.
Hiccup-
I stood up quickly and looked around. I saw a big red fluff on the floor trying to get up. Instinctively, I walked over to it and tried to help. When I grabbed it, I realized I grabbed a girl's waist. The girl, with the red fluff being her hair, quickly turned on me having an arrow readily notched onto her bow. I backed away.
"I'm not gonna hurt you," I say reassuringly. She menacingly squints her beautiful blue eyes.
"The name's Merida. I'm not some silly pet you can coo!" Merida snapped in a Scottish accent.
"Sorry. I'm Hiccup."
"Hold your breath then."
"No. My NAME is Hiccup."
"Oh sorry." Back in the center of the room, the other girl and the boy we got tangled with were introducing themselves to some other strange looking people.
The jolly, old man was North, the big bunny was Bunnymund, the flying, green girl was Tooth fairy (Tooth for short), and the short yellow guy who couldn't speak was Sandman (Sandy for short). Merida and I shared looks and walked over to them when the girl-- who we now know as Rapunzel-- in the pink and purple dress, SUPER long, golden blonde hair, big green eyes and no shoes or socks shook her head in our direction.
"And your names?" North boomed.
"I'm Hiccup. And yes that's a name." I added before they make the same mistake that Merida did.
"My name's Merida."
The white-haired boy, whom I have now come to realize was named Jack Frost, turned to North. "So how do we figure out who's the Big Four?"
"The what?" Merida and I asked in unison.
Jack sighed. "One of us," he gestured to himself and the odd looking group,"is connected to the three of you. We are Guardians. We protect the children of the world, own our own holidays or something, and do our part to make the children of the world believe in us. Now the Boogeyman, commonly known as Pitch to us, has returned with some other bad guys. You three were assembled here to fight this band of villains and, like I said, one of the original Guardians is connected to the three of you to make the Big Four. As far as we know, the Big Four are super powerful people joined to fight off the most evil threat. Whose with me so far?"
Merida, Rapunzel, and I nodded slowly with blank stares.
"Cool," Jack said. "Back to my original question: how do we know who is part of the Big Four?"
"Man in Moon tells us!" North exclaimed happily.
"Oh yeah. There's a guy in the moon who chooses Guardians and stuff." Jack explained boredly.
Then the giant clock bonged ten times. We've been here for an hour already? Boy does time fly! That's when I realized the full moon outside shined its light across a sundial on the floor of the workshop. The sundial glowed silver.
"Man in Moon speaks!" North announced and everyone made a circle around the sundial. Glittery silver dust gathered above the sundial. It began to change shape. It formed into a boy with some type of hood on, bare feet, and holding a hooked staff. It looked a lot like Jack Frost. Jack started laughing, then he turned to face the moon.
"This is a joke right? I'm already stuck as a Guardian, and now you doom me to fight Pitch again? Arrrrgh!!!" With that Jack pulled up his hood and flew out of the room.
Jack-
The Man in the Moon had no right to do this to me! Haven't I been through enough the past year? C'mon! This isn't fair.
To anyone anymore.
Merida~
"Well this is a bust!" I say.
"I think this is pretty exciting," Rapunzel squealed.
"Well, it would be, you know, if one of our teammates wasn't a looney!" I point out.
Rapunzel just huffed in defeat. "Whatever."
