Chapter six (gore warning)
The ground was shaking under his paws, and the choking smell of blood and the acid breath of a roaring filled his lungs. It made his chest feel tight and it hard to breath, as if he was trapped under a giant crushing paw.
He blinked one, twice, dust fluttered in slow motion around his face and before his grey eyes. A large white and grey splotched tom was reaching forth, his claws unsheathed, each shining like a small crescent moon only a mouse length away.
'That's... Stark...he's here, in our home....' he padded away from the vicious tom frozen in mid air, to look down at the swarm of fighting cats. Despite the fact that the ground tremored, they all were frozen in place, as if trapped in invisible ice leaving Hoarfrost to view them all as long as he wanted, until the slight of his cats dying was well burned into his mind.
Twig's body was closed to him, her neck was gorged wide open, the small fluffy stumpy tailed cat stared blankly ahead in shock. Her killer stood over her body with a cruel glint in her eyes. Cinder was pinned by two burly tom cats as another nipped his paws as if trying to bite off his extra toes. Jay was trying to pull the cat away, but she couldn't even see who she was trying to grab, as her eyes had been clawed to bits. Fern was trying to fight off four cats at once, her ginger pelt a shade darker from the waterfalls of blood, her eyes had an emotion he wouldn't of ever guessed possible for her, complete and utter dismay. Finally there was Light, his eyes ablaze and his jaw unhinged wide in a mighty yowl, now only if his head was still attached to his body.
"Stop, stop it! Stop making me see this!" He wailed, eyes shutting tightly, the tom buried his face in his paws. "Wake up Hoarfrost! Wake up it's just a bad dream!" Hoarfrost cried to himself, but the rumbling didn't stop. Then it was all stopped by a soft mew.
"Brother, can you look at me? This is important."
He recognized the voice almost instantly, despite the fact that it had been many moons since he had seen the one it belonged to, and the guilt kept coming.
"P..puddle..?" Hoarfrost jolted upwards, and before him stood his brother, for a moment his heart felt a sure of joy, finally he could see his brother again; only to cringe when he saw the blood on the small cat's mouth, how his whites of his eyes were a coppery yellow, and how his body was unnaturally bent. The kit was as small and as broken as he had been on the day he had died.
"Brother," he repeated, the kit walked over and gently touched his cold muzzle to Hoarfrost's leg to great him, the cold was shocking as a plunge in ice water.
"P-puddle please, why am I seeing this? Y-you need to make this stop," the tabby begged the small cat standing before him. Puddle just turned and limped towards the far edge of their camp, past the frozen cats in war.
"You'll have to stop it for yourself Brother, the roarings are coming to eat this place, they are mad that you were able escaped... if you don't leave this place, both your enemies will come and it will be the end for you and your cats." Despite the fact that the tiny cat only got further and further, Hoarfrost heard his brother's mew as if he was whispering softly into his ear.
"Leave? Wait, don't go! You have to tell me more!" He surged forth to catch up with Puddle. "Puddle tell me more! Please!" The rumbling was there again, and at that exact moment he had reached the edge of the den, and the wall exploded with the snarling jaws of a roaring and their blinding eyes.
"GAH!" He sat up so fast he collided with a very startled Light, both cats stumbled back in shock, eyes wide and fur on end.
"H.. Hoarfrost?" Light looked at the panting tom, for a moment Hoarfrost wondered how long he had been there, how much he had seen and how much he had heard, but the next moment he didn't care, Hoarfrost hastily moved closer and pushed his nose into the other tom's fur.
"You're alright," he breathed, Light's body was warm, warm and alive, not beheaded, his pelt was unmarked, his friend was alright.
"Y.. yes? Hoarfrost what happened? You were thrashing and crying out in your sleep!" Light returned his embrace, and Hoarfrost could feel his uneven heartbeat in his ears. "Was it another nightmare...?"
"No," he finally answered, his dreams had always brought a murkiness with them, but now it was all clear.. "They aren't nightmares, I'm .. I'm dreaming of the future," the tom cat paused, waiting for Light to call him out as ridiculous, but the brindle coloured cat just waited in silence and for him to continue. "Before we even met, I had dreams and later, they'd come true, it's.. it's how I even helped you out of your old upwalker's home, I dreamed of us escaping, and I dreamed of the way here, and I dreamed of finding Jay, and now Light very bad things are coming... Stark's cats are going to attack us, and we'll all be so busy fighting we won't notice the roarings sneak up and eat the den, we need to leave Light, all of us!"
Light stayed quiet for several more moments, each dragging moment filled Hoarfrost with the fear that he was going to be dismissed as crazy. 'It doesn't matter, I'll drag him out if I have to!'
".... ... I believe you Hoarfrost," he finally said, bringing down a crashing wave of relief, he melted deeper into Light's black and orange splattered fur. "I believe you because you're my best friend, and the way we found Jay, it's too similar to that dream you said you had to be coincidence, and you'd only say something this wild if it was to protect us... because you're honestly terrible of coming up with stories."
".... ... that's why you believe me?" Hoarfrost grunted softly.
"Admittedly while very disturbing, it's a better story then Sheer's deathstick story, and actually real... or is going to be real... Hoarfrost you're certain?" He pushed the tom away gently just to see his eyes, as if searching them deeply for something. "The cold days are starting, and soon prey will be scarce, do we really have to go?"
"Yes, yes we do, L-Light I saw you dead, I saw Twig dead and a lot of other cats horribly wounded or dead! I don't want to leave, not when this place has become home, but it's not going to be around for much longer, we need to leave," with that, Light didn't doubt him a moment longer.
"Alright, if you say our enemies are upon us, we'll leave before they can catch us, now all that's left to do is convince the others that we can't stay here." Light turned to look at the cats, who laid dozing in the area Hoarfrost knew would be covered in blood and bodies if he couldn't convince them.
'I have to try, I can't let more cats die, not when I can save them.'
