part v | a new mission
Rey walked slowly to the Falcon where Ben was wiping off his hands. She took him by the jaw and pulled him down for another kiss. "Can you believe it!" she asked.
He shook his head no. "All those Jedi archives saved? I don't think I do believe it. Surely Darth Vader would have found something like that. The emperor spoke of Ahsoka Tano. He said the Vader killed her."
Rey bowed her head in sadness. "His own padawan."
"We still have to look," Ben assured. We have to build our sabers first.
"Where are we going to find Kyber Crystals?" Rey asked surely the archives would have that.
"The Crystal Caves on Illum," Ben told her. "That's where I found mine. I won't have been destroyed. The Sith needed the kyber too. If they found it that is. I don't think they knew. They couldn't get in."
"So what do we do? Mine the crystal ourselves?"
Ben nodded, limping over to the crates of supplies provided for their trip. "Yes, that's it. It's harder than it sounds. You're not mining a crystal. You're mining your crystal. The force must guide you. The force with deceive us and test us. That's why you're not a Jedi until you've contrasted your own lightsaber." He used the force to guide four crates into the falcon. Rey decided to help.
"Can we fail?" Rey asked him as they boarded the Falcon. Ben shrugged as they stacked the crates in the number 2 hold. "Luke warned us that it could happen. Only one of the apprentices under Luke failed. She went crazy. She was afraid she'd fall to the Dark side after that. Killed herself. It won't happen to us though. We can't fail."
Rey sat down on one of the boxes, catching her breath. They hadn't moved in months. Her chest ached with every inhale and exhale. "Should we wait? Are we going to have to fight for these crystals?"
Ben took a deep breath, squinting through the pain Rey knew he had in his chest. "No, no. It's all mental."
"Good." He held her hand out to her.
"Let's go grab the pathfinder and Senator Organa's message."
Rey smiled and took his hand.
✺
The blue silhouette of a young Alderaanian man dressed in expensive clothing. His black hair was slicked back and he wore a neat goatee. He had deep smile lines, but his eyes conveyed the fact that he had seen terrible, terrible things.
"My daughter, Leia. If you are seeing this, then you know now that it is not exactly true, while I still love it as one. You know now that you are the daughter of my closest friend, Senator Padmé Amidala, the strongest, smartest woman I have ever known, and her husband, Jedi Knight Anakin Skywalker. You are more and more like your true mother every day. You are fearless like your father. Your father, Anakin, was a man I held utmost expect for. Never once let it get to you that Vader Maybe a part of you. It was a tragedy, and you must not let it get to you..."
Ben speeded through Bail's message to Leia and stopped when he was addressing the Jedi. "During the fall of the Republic, with Jedi Master Obi-Wan Kenobi's help, I salvaged nearly all of the Jedi archives and artifacts. In this chest, I have placed a Jedi Wayfinder built by Master Kenobi that will lead you to the hiding place of the archives. If you are watching this, the Empire has likely fallen. I don't know how long it is been. Perhaps this is Luke. Obi-Wan and Yoda spoke of your importance to your father's destiny, but they never spoke of the possibility that you may find these archives. I am no Jedi, but I have loved many. Jedi that I have had the pleasure of calling friends, family, and my heroes.
"You, the receiver of this message, shall rebuild the greatest order that ever existed, and hopefully will not repeat the same mistakes of the council before. I say that on behalf of the last Grand Master of the Jedi High Council, Yoda. When you find this place, you will find Anakin Skywalker's apprentice, now Jedi Master, Ahsoka Tano. She has been tasked with keeping these archives and updating them. I don't know how long it has been, or if this message is even in the right hands, but...
"May the force be with you." The message flickered swag and Rey picked up the Wayfinder and looked at the life within it. "A Jedi created this," Rey said with a smiled. Ben took it from her and looked at it for himself. "Ben Kenobi."
"He trained Anakin and Luke," Ben told her. "That's who mom named me after."
Rey patted him gently on the back. "She saw that you would be worthy of his name. You will be a brilliant Jedi."
A smile tugged at the corner of his lips. "So will you." She giggled and turned to Chewie, who was her copilot.
"Hit it," she instructed. "On to Kashyyyk."
Chewie roared in delight and the Millenium Falcon blasted into lightspeed. Rey left it on autopilot and stood up to go to the outpatient bag. Out of it, she pulled her medication and took and a couple more.
"Let me have a few," Ben said, holding his hand up for her to toss it. Rey reaches in the bag and tossed him his pain killers.
"Have you read the instructions on you antibiotics?" she asked him as she took his other pill bottle out of the bag.
"Uh-uh." Poured a couple of the pain killers into his mouth a swallowed. Rey motion for him to toss it back. He obliged and Rey caught the bottle, tossing his antibiotics back to him. "Thanks," he told her, reading the back of the package.
"What does it say?" Rey asked.
"2 a day until their gone," he answered. "This kind makes my stomach upset," Ben said with a grimace as he dumped a couple into his hands.
"Well, we really need to be eating well right now," Rey said. "We are quite weak."
"Yeah, I know. We should also train. Get our lungs back. Our strength," Ben said. He looked at his arm and picked up his shirt. "I look really soft. I feel it too."
"What about your physical therapy. Have you powered on the droid?"
Ben shrugged. "I'm not going to use the droid. I pretty much already have a grip on it."
Chewie growled a remark as he left the cockpit. Rey nodded, agreeing. "Just like him."
"Well, I suppose he was not an idiot then," Ben defended. "I don't need the therapy." He stood up and did a lighthearted spin on his robotic leg. "See? All fine."
"Alright then, strong man," Rey laughed. Ben took a step forward and lost his balance on his robot leg, catching himself over Rey. She giggled, staring up at him with those eyes. Ben lingered there, over her, feeling powerful, wanting to take her into his arms and kiss her. Wanting to hold her. The smile on Rey's face faded away and was replaced with the same one Ben wore on his face. Her eyes traveled from his and looked him up and down. Rey relaxed as Ben leaned forward, forgetting that they had company. The inside of him burned for her, but the heat between them was short-lived when 3PO entered.
"The lightspeed trajectory path is 25 minutes. We shall be able to enter the Kashyyyk atmosphere at that time," he interrupted. Ben was startled out of his stupor, and backed away, flustered and frustrated.
"Thanks, 3PO," he muttered, turning to look out the window.
Rey sat up and pushed her knees together shuttering. "Thanks, 3PO."
"You are very welcome," he told them. "I shall return to help Chewbacca. I feel it is a shame that our paths are separating."
Rey and Ben didn't say anything back. They waited for the droid to leave before Rey sprang from her seat and pushed a hard kiss on Ben's lips, breaking the tension. Ben's large hand pulled her body close.
"25 minutes..." she told him.
"No physical activity..." Ben reminded her through the kiss.
"It doesn't have to be so much," she said as they closed the blast door to the cockpit.
"That's funny," Ben assured, pushing her against the windowless door with a grunt.
✺
Chewy wrapped Ben and Rey both in a big hug before the boarding ramp shut. "Goodbye, Chewie," Ben told him with a smiled. "I'll see you later."
Chewy roared so loud that it hurt Rey's ears. They all laughed and sent him on his way. When they were back on the Falcon, Ben sat in the pilot seat, and Rey on the copilot.
"We shouldn't have to refuel for a long time."
"Chewie loaded extra stores on Kashyyyk. Also more parts," Ben assured as he fired up the ship.
"I'm going to miss him," Rey said lightly her voice a bit sad.
Ben shrugged. "He wouldn't have enjoyed himself on this mission. We'll see him again."
"I know."
"Have you made the calculations yet?"
Rey nodded. "They're in," Rey assured as they broke atmosphere.
"Alright. We're in orbit. Punch it." Rey smiled and sent the ship into hyperspace.
Once they were going steady, Ben led back in his seat with a smug smirk. "You don't want to go again, do you?" he asked with a chuckle. Rey huffed and groaned, slowly stretching.
"Let me heal, love," Rey laughed.
"Why would we go back to Kashyyyk? Have we left something?" 3PO asked as he entered.
Rey turned back to look at the droid, her face red. Ben lost himself in laughter. His chest hurt from it and his abdomen was still sore, but the laughter felt so good that the rest didn't matter. "We didn't leave anything, 3PO," Ben said through his laughter. He held his stomach where the injury was.
The sight of Ben laughing made Rey start to laugh too, even though she was still a bit shaken from earlier and her chest was still so tender. The pain medication definitely helped it, but laughter shook her too hard.
"I don't know what is so funny," 3PO said.
Ben inhaled deeply, his laughter dying down. "I don't remember the last time I laughed like that," he said, spinning his chair out. Rey grinned and kissed his forehead. "How about some food?"
"Yes, please," Ben agreed, standing to his feet and following behind.
