bonjour mes filles i should study for my biology test but i wanted to share some art with u. im honestly the most picky person everrrrr in everything, books, music, movies, boys (unless they're emotionally unavailable :') ) i love reading but i rarely ever finish a book because i always find so many loopholes in the plot, bad prose is so offputting to me, men writing about women, undeveloped characters, arrogant style, etc so lykkk i just wanted to share the few books i do like here we are

1. making nice- matt sumell : my favorite book forever and ever. the diary of a depressed barney stinson who just lost his mother. starring arby, a forever lonely man who lives on a boat (?) and fucks chicks he meets at bars. he loses his mother and he wonders "who are we?" and "whats the point?" with 26 options from A to Z. a collection of anecdotes that include the funniest stories about finding Your Supermarket in adulthood, stories about caring for a bird's broken leg mid-existential crisis, chapters wondering about human nature, who we are and why we do anything we do

2. the perks of being a wallflower- stephen chbosky : the first book i ever read that wasnt in the mary kate and ashley solve crime series. a pivotal point of reference for newly-depressed 13 year old me trying to deal with bad grades, bad friends, getting fat all of a sudden and being depressed. i remember telling my friend i liked it bc i could relate and she laughed at me saying "ur aunt never molested u and u never tried to kill urself" well yeah but :/ a very important book on how to navigate teenagehood. were all sad, weak and vulnerable charlie who only seeks acceptance and is trying to make sense of this newly found world of teenagers and their relationships (platonic and romantic) between each other. how to deal with ur friends' grief :( ur own :( ur family's :( ur gf who u dont really like :( ur crush who will never be urs :( reading a lot of books :(

3. me and earl and the dying girl- jesse andrews : so refreshing !! im sure everybody has read this book and the perks of beinf a wallflower too lol but i love these books deadass. me and earl is fucking hilarious, im like laughing out loud troughout but lowkey crying. i love when teenagers add their voices to things as deep as friendships and death

4. going over- beth kephart : icant believe for Once my school assigned us a book not written by the White Man about White Man endeavours. a love story in the 80s between a 15 year old west berlin punk chick with pink hair and a glittery mole above her lip, who sneaks out at night to graffiti resistance pieces on the berlin wall, and the 18 year old love-of-her-life blue eyed boy who already lost his parents and his grandfather, lives alone with his grandma who has seen too much, will he cross to the other side???? stefan???? . such a good story that switches between these two's povs. being 15 going on 16 and in love, and filled with political range, u want to change the world and help the kids (honestly so much more than a love story! the sub plots are incredible)

5. love is a dog from hell- charles bukowski : yes a misogynist i know ! please crucify me but charles bukowski writes about his breakfast and i find myself in tears because he knows whats up when depression shows itself in ur day to day activities, writers block is a bitch and ur born to be a writer so drink gamble fuck ruin ur life and dont talk to anyone. a lot of real shit that Speaks To My Soul hes dead rn anyway so

6. its kind of a funny story- ned vizzini : (my first instinct was to type nick lenzini ....) ladies, mid summer, ur mid-depressive episode, ur not talking to any of ur friends bc ur convinced everybody hates u, u pick up this book and read it in ur parents king size bed, wyd,? do push ups like the narrator says and lay on ur titties and feel ur heart beat kno ur alive. more teenage boy depression chronicles. evokes the very important idea that ur depression will never undergo the Big Shift and that will never last forever , so just be happy with the small Shifts, they let u know everything will be ok at certain points
