Chapter 22

Desmond's POV

We change back into our regular clothes and walk out of the changeroom.

"Finally! Time to go home!" Connor says happily, throwing his gym bag into his locker.

"Yeah, let's go," I reply.

We get into my car and drive home, all the assassins talking about their dodgeball victory and Leonardo listening.

"I missed Malik because he doesn't have an arm!" Ezio says. Malik smirks and playfully punches his arm.

We arrive at the house and walk in, all laughing. Rebecca, Shaun and Lucy look up from where they're sitting and Rebecca grins.

"What's with you guys?" she asks.

"We played dodgeball in gym and demolished everyone!" Altaïr laughs.

Lucy and Rebecca grin at each other and Shaun just nods and goes back to his computer.

The assassins walk into the living room and talk quietly or do homework and Lucy calls me over.

"Desmond, I need to talk to you," she says.

"Yes?" I ask, leaning on her desk.

"The Animus is almost fixed," Rebecca whispers, sliding her wheeled chair over to Lucy's desk.

"Oh..." I mumble. I look into the living room to where the assassins sit laughing and Leonardo draws the scenery from the window.

"We'll tell you a day in advance when you need to say goodbye," Rebecca says. I nod and walk to my room.

"Desmond, is everything alright?" Edward asks.

"Yeah, everything's fine. I just need sometime to myself," I reply. Leonardo looks at me with concern in his eyes and I look away.

I walk into my room and sit on my bed, looking at the ceiling. I try to fight them back, but hot tears form in my eyes. I wipe them away quickly, but they keep coming.

I've grown so close with all of them. I don't want them to leave.

There's a soft knock on the door and I regain my composure.

"Come in," I say quietly. Leonardo pokes his head in and walks over to me, a sketchpad in his hand.

"Desmond, I want to show you something," he says. He sits on the bed next to me and opens his sketchbook. On the page he shows me is a drawing of all of us, Altaïr, Malik, Ezio, Connor, Edward, Leonardo and I in a group hug. We're all smiling, and it makes me want to cry even more.

"I want you to keep this. To remember us after we go back to our own times," Leo says, tearing the page from the book and handing it to me.

"Thanks Leo. I'll treasure this," I reply. Leo grins and pats me on the back before leaving the room.

I tuck the picture into my bedside table and lie down on my bed, letting the tears flow freely.

These guys mean so much to me.
