Chapter 4
The sun is slowing fading behind the blooming trees in the distance. The sky is painted with orange and red hues that blur together as stars begin to peak through the blanket of the sky. Me and three cubs sit in an abandoned building just on the outskirts of small country town. Grass is slowly eating at the sides of the roads, I smile. Even in the most abandoned of places, beauty still shines through.
Soon the cubs start to play fight and one thing leads to another and they end up in the corner of the empty room. I chuckle.
They all look at me before they go back to fighting.
I have already set up my 'camp' for the night here, my sleeping bag and pillow lay on the floor, with an empty can of beans beside it. I'm just waiting until the night falls so I can go to sleep. It seems to be secure enough here, I checked every room, set up some cans on strings so if any of the dead do somehow wander up here, I'll hear them. I also barricaded the door with an empty bookshelf, a chair, a small table and a blue vase.
I huff as my mind begins to wander as I blankly stare at my hands. If Phoebe was here, me and her would probably play a card game. My lips quiver thinking about her as I put head my hands. We would be laughing and talking about Georgia too, talking about how beautiful it is. I try to smile but fail. I never been there and neither had she, but she was describing all the pictures she saw online. Her and her partner really wanted to go before the world came to an end. She would always talk about her partner; their name was Dakota. They supposedly made it out with my Dad and Revival.
Tears glaze my eyes, I blink them back before and force myself to get up. I look back at the cubs and they are still having fun. I need to think of names for them.
Names. Think of names. Names are distracting.
Okay, well, the one who has black tipped ears, I want to name him Sid. He's the adventurous one who came and hi to me. I think he will be leader once they all grow up. I don't know what to name the others though.
I look around the room for ideas. I could name one of them Sunset. I nod to myself. Yeah, Sunset sounds nice. The cub with such golden eyes that they look orange will be named Sunset.
And now the last cub, what should I name him? Hmmm. I look around the room again before my eyes fall to my feet. Shoe. Yeah, Shoe sounds right. Sid, Sunset and Shoe. Three S's for my three new sons. I nod to myself again, perfect. I will have to teach them their names, but I'll do that later. They look like they are having too much fun right now.
The sound of engines tears through the silence of the small country town. I drop to the floor. My heart beats up into my throat as I begin to sweat. I hope they keep going. I take my handgun out from my holster and take off the safety. I crawl over to the window and peak out.
My eyes widen. Shit! Shit! Shit! There are three trucks and they all parking in front of the building. Some people begin to get out. Why are they getting out? I checked this place and everything looked abandoned. There hasn't been signs of life her for months.
"Preston, we checked everywhere, we can't find them." A bald man with a voice as deep as the ocean complains.
"You will find Wolf and his people or so help me!" A lanky man with thin blonde hair yells and points to the bald man. "Wolf and his people do not get to fuck us over, they-."
"Don't you think you were kind of a prick though? I mean, from their perspective they probably thought-."
Preston raises his gun to the other man, pulls the trigger and his body falls to the ground with a thud. Blood pools around the corpse. My heart stops. Preston turns and looks at his people, "Do any of you have anything else to say to me about Wolf?"
Everyone is as silent as they are still. I swallow hard.
"Good. Now let's set up camp here. We won't make it home in time for-."
"Preston, there is a town-." A young man tries to voice his opinion. Preston stares him down. "I love this idea, it's great."
"Go take a sweep of this place and make sure there is no one there, if there is, kill them and take their supplies." Preston orders his people before pointing to the building. They all follow their orders without question.
My eyes grow as wide as saucers as my heart pounds against my chest. Every second slows down. They all walk towards the building but it's as if I am seeing everything in slow motion. I-I need to do something. I shake my head before looking back to my cheetah sons. They need to be protected at all costs. They are too precious to be seen by this monster and his people. I can't just run and leave them here, I need to protect them. I can't just pick them up and make a run for it though. I wouldn't make it.
I check how many bullets I have left. Not enough for all of them. There is probably ten of them and I only have six. I take in a deep breath and tip toe towards the door as Sid, Sunset and Shoe continue to play in the corner.
It's me or Preston and his people.
I choose myself. Myself, Sid, Sunset and Shoe.
