Second chances

Seastar was a completely different dragon. She tore through the rainforest, screaming her parents names. Ripcurrent broke off in a dead run after her, Coral on his tail. About a mile into the forest, he heard footsteps behind him. He whirled around, but it was only Glory, flapping her wings to catch up.

"I heard it too," she panted. "If either of them die..." She shook her head, and, seeing her scales, turned them from green to camouflage, and soon all you could see was a ripple of air in the trees. They came to a clearing and all four of them stopped dead. In the clearing was Riptide and Tsunami. They were surrounded by Skywings.

Tsunami had chains covering her whole body. He could barely see any of the blue, because where the chains weren't there were horrible burns. She was barely conscious, trying desperately to get to Riptide, who was standing in the center of the clearing.

Riptide made Tsunami look like she was in good condition. He was being circled by Skywings. One eye was swollen shut, and he lay on the ground, panting. His breathing was raspy, and he could hardly move. Through the dried blood on his scales you could see long claw marks. His talons shook as the Skywings hissed at him, uttering words they could not hear from their current position. Then, one took in a breath for what would be a fatal burn.

Ripcurrent ran to him. Tsunami hobbled as fast as she could. He knew Glory would be trying to get there too. But she got their first. Running in front of him, Ripcurrent watched in horror as flames engulfed her and she collapsed in a heap on the rainforest floor.

The Skywings were flapping away as fast as they could, as Glory had materialized in the air, teeth bared and ready to strike at anyone who got near the family.

Tsunami bit back a sob. Seastar had collapsed on Riptide, who was unconscious. She wasn't breathing.

"Do something! Save her. She's my daughter, she can't... She can't... You can save her!" She pointed to Coral, trembling. The same thought had occurred to Ripcurrent, but it couldn't be the only way.

"I can't, I'll go mad!" She said, hysteria seeping through her voice.

"I don't care! She's my daughter fix her!"

"Tsunami, think about this, she's just a dragonet," Glory interjected. "She's someone's daughter, too. Your sisters. You can't do that to her." Tsunami's eyes cleared.

"You can't save her," Glory whispered.

Tsunami let out a wracking sob and shook over her daughters body. Ripcurrent couldn't see her face. He fell into Coral. He heard her sniff, trying to hold back tears. In that moment, Ripcurrent was sure that nothing ever again would be all right.
