Once the two girls were settled in, their mother and father decided that they needed some fresh air and sent them outside.
"But mom" Sophia turned towards the door, but their mother must either not have heard or just simply ignored her daughter's pleas entirely for she slammed the door in her face. Riley and her sister just looked at each other and shrugged, as they began to walk along a nearby beach.
"Man, this beach just seems like it goes on forever!" Sophia said. "I sure hope we find something interesting to do soon," Riley simply nodded. The two kept walking along for what seemed like hours, the hot sand remained rather cool in the shade as they rounded a corner.
Beyond the misty cave that the two sisters entered, it was almost like the gravity had shifted under their feet- Riley struggling to grasp a nearby stalactite to steady herself. Soon the ride, feeling like a turntable had ended- the gravity becoming more stable, and that feeling of motion sickness if anything had long since subsided. The sky at the other end of the cave was a brilliant blue, the fog that had made everything look blue somewhat dreary had vanished. Immediately, when the two girls rushed out they knew that something was different, for the portal revealed to them that now instead of beachy sand under their feet, they were running on soft green grass. Towering topiary-type animals were scattered throughout the vast foliage.
As the two walked up the walkway towards the vast, stunning house/mansion with the blackish door, Sophia, took it upon herself to knock for the both of them; as for Riley, she just stared at the stained-glass picture that was embedded into the doorframe.
"Miss Peregrine, delighted to meet you." A tall woman, dressed in a blue dress or overcoat, said upon answering the door; her hair was black with hints of blue in it. She almost pulled the two inside upon shaking both their hands.
The two followed Miss P. through the house towards the kitchen, one of the children that lived in the home was resting their hands on what appeared to be an old-timey tea kettle.
"That'll do Olive, Nobody likes overboiled tea" the sweet, baby-faced girl simply lifted her head up and smiled warmly in her direction; taking her hands off the kettle rather quickly.
Miss Peregrine handed the two; cups of freshly poured tea, only to be met with both of the sisters staring in utter shock and amazement. "Your- your hands?" Riley exclaimed.
"How is this possible? This tea's scalding hot, yet your hands aren't singed or burned," Sophia questioned, looking from the girl to their headmistress.
