Part 6: Accident
"Curse the coffee!" She sighed under her breath, wiping the coffee drops that had spilt on her dress, with a tissue.
"I'm sorry Ma'am." The staff member continued to apologise and she looked up him.
"It's okay, don't panic, it was an accident." She responded politely but he wasn't convinced, he mentally cursed himself for accidentally dropping the coffee on the table, which had resulted few drops splatting out on Gauri's dress.
"Go get me another cup please, in the meantime I'll go to the washroom. . ." He nodded, placing the wet tissues onto the tray along with the glass while she stood up, heading towards the washroom with her handbag.
**
Omkara was continuously tapping the steering wheel with his fingers impatiently, gluing his eyes to the car monitor which displayed the time. He frustratedly sighed, glancing up at the traffic in front of him.
"Why can't it move!"
His phone began to ring and he stared down at it, picking it up and answering it.
"Yes, but I have an important work to finish off so I'll meet you in the evening." He spoke, responding to the caller.
"Okay, take care and don't forget to munch on lunch!" Shivaay's voice exclaimed with a small chuckle from the other side of the phone and Omkara hummed, disconnecting it afterwards.
"Gauri must be waiting." He mumbled to himself, worriedly glancing at the traffic and then at the time.
**
Gauri was sat on a different table this time while sipping from the coffee, she glanced at the clock and then at her phone screen to confirm if the time on the clock was correct and it was. There were only 8 minutes left till 3 and Gauri impatiently stares at the entrance, hoping to see Omkara walk in.
Her heart had started to send her nervousness as it thumped against her chest slowly. She was fearing he might not turn up.
"No, I said TEA!" A loud shout grabs her attention and she turns her head to the side, seeing a costumer argue with a member of staff.
"No sir, you asked for a Cappuccino with Victoria Sponge Cake." She responded back in a normal tone, not wanting to retaliate as she knew her job could be at risk due to this.
"I SAID TEA!" He roared, now grabbing everyone's attention with his anger, making the other costumers, including Gauri a little startled.
One of the other staff member walked towards the two, standing next to her colleague, facing the costumer.
"Sorry for the mistake sir, we will correct it. I'll go bring you a tea, what would you like in it?" He politely asked with a small smile.
"I want her to get it!" He exclaimed, pointing at the girl who had brought him a Cappuccino. She forced a wide fake smile, nodding at the costumer.
She reached out for the mug of Cappuccino but was stopped by the costumer. "Why are you touching this?"
"To exchange the order and bring your tea." She responded and he looked down at it.
"I'll take it."
"No sir, it's okay, we will take it."
"No no I'll take it."
"Sir, we will take it you don't need to worry." The male member of staff uttered, but the costumer shook his head negatively.
"NO! I will TAKE it!" He shouted, making everyone feel uncomfortable.
"But sir, it's okay, you don't need to take trouble." The girl politely uttered but the costumer started fidgeting with his fingers and picked the mug up.
"I will take it!" He exclaimed and threw the mug on her face.
"Ahhh!" She screamed, stumbling back.
Everyone stand up from their tables, except Gauri, shockingly intaking what had just happened.
"Shh shhh! I don't like noise!" He shout, standing up abruptly and pushing the plate of cake on the floor.
The male staff panics and swallows his spit while looking at the costumer while the girl finds blood dripping down from her forehead. The other staff rush there and start worrying, the costumer picks the table knife up, looking at the staff members.
Hearing the girl cry, he pushes the knife onto the male staff that served Gauri, and the knife pierced inside his skin drilling through with full force and he screamed.
"Ahh!" Gauri let out a small screech, dropping her mug while witnessing the scene while the other customers ran out screaming for their lives.
The costumer turns his head towards Gauri, who covers her mouth with her hand. That male staff falls back and is grabbed by the other staff members while one rushes inside to phone the police.
The costumer started to head towards Gauri, who started at him in fear.
**
Omkara had started speeding as soon as he slid out of the traffic and sighed disappointedly, finding himself 2 minutes late. He prayed she was still there and tensely drove as fast as he could. All that was on his mind right now was Gauri.
While loosing focus, he moves his eyes towards the monitor, failing to see what was in front of him and feels a thud against the front of his car. He shockingly looks forwards, stopping the car with a jerk. As it screeches, he hears a thud on-top of his car and widened his eyes in shock. His heart began to batter against his chest and he immediately opened his seatbelt, stepping out of his car and heading towards the back, seeing a lady figure roll down onto the floor.
He covered his mouth, then running his down his head, panicking.
'Gauri. . . But I can't leave this lady. . . What should I do?' He asked himself, now stuck in a dilemma.
At one side, it was Gauri and on the other side it was this lady that he had accidentally ran over, if he doesn't take the lady to the hospital, the he would be guilty for her death, and if he doesn't go to meet Gauri then he would be guilty for leaving her again. He slammed his hand against the bonnet, but he knew he had to make a choice.
He swallowed his spit, making his choice after a lot of thinking, but he had to do what he thought was right in his opinion. He headed towards the lady that was continuously bleeding, picking her up in his arms in order to drive her to the nearest hospital.
**
Police Station:
Gauri was terrified, sitting on the bench, thinking about the incident and glances up at the costumer who was behind the bars, yelling and shouting.
"Let ME OUT!!"
The staff and Gauri had been lucky that the police were patrolling nearby the cafe, if they hadn't then there would've been another accident which would've involved another person being injured. The male and the girl were taken to the hospital by the Constable while the remaining people present there were brought to the police station for enquiry as they were the witnesses.
While Gauri wiped her sweat from her neck, she realised that Omkara was supposed to meet her. 'What if he's there waiting. . .' She trailed off in her mind, instantly looking up.
'Urghh! I don't even have his phone number to tell him I'm at the police station!' She sighed in her mind with a frown, she pulled out her phone from her handbag and checked the time, it was 3:39pm.
"Excuse me Miss. . . Can you come and tell us what you saw." The inspector snapped her out of her thoughts and she stared at him for few seconds, not understanding as she hadn't heard him.
"Come say what you saw!" He exclaimed with a sigh and she stood up, nodding while heading towards the desk.
**
"It's good you brought her on time. She survived, but has unfortunately fractured her leg bones and spinal cord." The Doctor informed and Omkara looked on, he felt guilty as soon her condition was said by the Doctor, he couldn't even think to breath after knowing that he's the reason that lady had fractured her bones and spinal cord.
"Doctor, please cure her, I'll pay for her treatment but please make sure she becomes normal again." Omkara responded and the Doctor nodded at him.
"Can we talk to you Mr Oberoi?" Omkara and the Doctor turned their heads to the side, finding a police officer standing there with a Constable.
**
"And then he stabbed that boy with a table knife even though that boy didn't say anything at all." Gauri told while the inspector started writing it down.
"Okay, everyone has said this same thing, there has to be something wrong with that man otherwise why would he get angry over such a small thing?" The inspector asked while talking to the Constable.
"You're right sir." The Constable agreed and the inspector then looked back at Gauri.
"Please sign here." He uttered and she nodded, taking the pen and signing where she was instructed to.
"Thank you." He says and takes the pen back, closing the book. "We have recorded your statement, now can you please wait on the bench until you're called and just give your contact details, after that you're free to leave." He added and Gauri nods at the instructions, standing up and heading towards the bench, where few of the cafe staff were sat, waiting for their turn.
"Call a Psychiatrist and a Doctor for an assessment." The Inspector instructed and the Constable nods, walking towards the phone. He opens the drawer and pulls out a phone book, starting to flick through the pages.
Gauri plays with her finger tensely, worried and unsure about Omkara's arrival at the cafe.
**
"Her name is Suhasini but our police team have named her Suicide Sadma." The Inspector revealed, confusing Omkara.
"We call her that because she never leaves any opportunities to kill herself, she keeps on jumping in front of peoples cars, sometimes she's lucky and the other time she's successful in harming herself."
"Also, she lost her son few months ago and couldn't handle his absence, we even sent her to the asylum but they won't accept her saying she needs to go to a bigger one where she could be more safe." The Constable added and Omkara nodded with an '0' formed.
"We didn't have enough money to send her to a good one and neither is the Government supporting. We did inform our senior and he said he would talk to the higher authorities, but they have been investigating this case for nearly two weeks now and this is the 26th car she jumped in front of." The Inspector sighed, shaking his head in disbelief.
"Didn't you give her to an NGO or an old home?"
"We tried but they couldn't keep her either cause she was causing stress to other vulnerable adults." The Constable responded and Omkara began to think, starting to make a decision.
"I would like to cover her expenses, that's the least I can do to feel less guilty." Omkara uttered after thinking and the Inspector and the Constable looked at him.
"You don't have to, we would've made you pay the fine if we didn't know her case, but we know she likes jumping in front of other people's cars and what can we charge you for, you did hit but you didn't run." The Inspector says but Omkara was keen on his recently made decision.
"I would like for her to get better and out of the trauma of loosing her son, I will still feel guilty no matter what because it was my car that had hit her, please don't say no." Omkara requests and the Inspector looked at the Constable who nodded.
"Okay fine, search for a mental asylum and get her admitted after their treatment." The inspector says and Omkara nods.
"You wait here, I'll go inside to get the file." The Constable says and Omkara nods again, waiting by outside the door to the police station as the Constable and Inspector entered.
"You're back early, who's case was it?" One of the other cop asked and the Inspector sighed. "Suicide Sadma."
"Ohh, again?" The Inspector nodded.
"I forgot to take the statement file to the hospital, now that gentleman is waiting outside to give his statement and he's also willing to bear the expenses of a private mental asylum for her." The Constable revealed, surprising the other cops.
"That's one great hearted gentleman."
"He is, he even paid for her care in the city hospital." The Inspector uttered, impressing the others.
"Here's the statement file." The Constable took it and headed towards the exit.
"Next!" The cop at the desk shouts and Gauri stands up, heading towards him.
"What'a your case about?" The inspector asked and the other one sighed, staring at the man/customer that was behind bars.
"This man abused two of the staff members in a cafe shop and I suspect he has mental illness, that's why I called a Psychiatrist and a general Doctor for an assessment."
"Oh, did they come?"
"Not yet, they should be here. . ." He stops after seeing them walk inside the police station, "There they are."
The other one turned around while the Inspector in charge of this case heads towards them. "Right here." He instructs and points at the man/customer.
"Can you write your name, address, the company you work for and your contact number right here please." Gauri nods at the cop and takes the pen, starting to write her details on the paper.
"We will call you if necessary, in case we need extra witnesses to go to a court hearing or if we find any other clues during this investigation." The cop explained as she wrote her details and nodded, handing the pen back after finishing.
*
"Just sign here now please." The Constable instructs and Omkara takes the pen, signing the statement paper.
After signing, Omkara hands the pen back over to the Constable. "You're free to go."
"Thank you." He says and turns around, heading towards the exit.
Gauri steps out of the police station, zipping her bag and starts walking away.
