Chapter Two- Promise to Protect
Frisk ran far and fast, their heart pounding out of their chest. Their breath was labored as the fear of Undyne catching them built within their stomach. They passed the sign saying "Welcome to Hotland," then escaped to Hotland, where up ahead they saw a familiar figure... Sans.
He was looking directly at Frisk, grinning. When Frisk reached his booth out of breath and with panic written on their face, he saw Undyne, chasing the little human, with a spear in her hand. Sans stepped out of the wooden booth and slowed Frisk down. Frisk hid behind him, their whole body shaking, fearful tears falling down their cheeks, watching Undyne get closer... and closer... and eventually, stop dead in her tracks.
"Sans!" yelled Undyne, her fists curled. "You're a sentry! You're supposed to let ME handle the human!" She seethed at him, anger basically fuming off her head.
Sans just looked at Undyne, his characteristic grin never faltering. "Heeey Undyne," he said, his eye glowing faintly blue, "You seem pretty heated..." he winked at the fish monster.
"I'm NOT in the mood for your jokes, Sans! Hand over the wench this instant!" She narrowed her eyes at him.
"and what if i said...no?" he said, challenging her with his comical grin, stretched wide across his face.
"Sans... That's an ORDER." She fumed. " I'm your boss, not the other way around, hand them over now, by the order of King ASGORE."
"okay, seriously, now," Sans said, his demeanor somehow different. "this kid, even though they're a human, is still a child. And they're kind, and sweet, and you can't just... come in here... and kill them. over and over. that's not fair. that's murder, Undyne, and if our King says that too, he's a murderer." The skeleton's left eye glowed faintly blue. "i'm not going to let you get away with this!"
She looked at the skeleton, taken aback, "You...You dare to defy me? The leader of the Royal Guard... do you even know what I'm capable of?" She snarled at him.
He smirked summoning a bone and balancing it on his finger, "nope, but i can take a pretty good guess."
Frisk gulped, they didn't want a fight, they didn't want that at all, but they were too scared to move a muscle and just stayed tucked away behind Sans.
"You draw your weapon... to me!? How DARE you?!" She summoned spears behind her, "Last chance, Sans! Hand over the human, or pay the consequence of going against our King!"
He put his hand in front of the child protectively, "heh, i made a promise. i'm not gonna break it now." His grin seemed to grow as more bones appeared behind him. "but why should i pay the consequence? i'm not the one trying to murder an innocent child."
He flicked his wrist and they all went hurdling towards Undyne. She quickly jumped out of the way of the majority of them, but the last one nicked her in the side of her cheek.
She checked her HP, her face scrunching up confused.
"One damage?" She looked towards him before bursting into laughter, "You really think an attack with one damage will stop m--"
Her HP dropped again, making her freeze. She felt it continuing to drop, before halting, "... what the hell was th--?!"
Sans winked, "karma seems to be catching up on you, undyne." he chuckled, waiting for her attack.
She growled at him, wiping her cheek with her arm, "Fine, we'll play your way," she sent her spears directly above the skeleton and child. She then threw her arm down, watching the spears rain down on them. They impacted the ground creating a cloud of dust.
When the dust cleared, she jumped when she saw no one there, but instead a paper on the ground where they had been.
She blinked before approaching it, she picked it up slowly, mumbling what it said out loud, "roses are red, violets are blue, i'd turn around, if i were you.....!!!??"
She whipped around, a second too late, feeling a burning blast collide with the back of her armor, knocking her on her feet. She quickly jumped up from years of training and turned around to find just the skeleton standing there.
"wow," he began, generally seeming shocked, "didn't think you'd fall for that."
She growled, looking for the human, but Sans picked up on it before she could ask, "you're wondering where the kiddo is, aren't ya?...well," he said looking toward the top of the rocks behind him, "they're safe."
Frisk looked on, behind a boulder on top of a rock formation. They didn't know what to do and they wanted the fight to stop, but Frisk didn't know how. Both of them were stubborn as mules, and wouldn't listen to the human child if Frisk was screaming in their ears.
They looked at their arm where the spear hit, taking out their bandana and tying it around the wound to stop the bleeding, then inhaled a cinnamon roll. They checked their health, to find it back at twenty. They heard another crash of sound, their attention being brought back to the monsters. They bit their tongue, continuing to watch the battle.
"NGAHHHH!" Undyne picked up a boulder and suplexed it high above her head, grunting, then smashed it down onto Sans, just for him to suddenly disappear yet again, before reappearing behind her. He smiled, and he summoned bones, surrounding her. They moved in, and she checked her HP again. "WHY WON'T YOU JUST GO AWAY?" Undyne shot a spear at her opponent, but he teleported away.
She growled, "STOP DOING THAT! IF YOU'RE GONNA FIGHT, FACE ME HEAD ON, COWARD!"
Sans took no heed of her words, not letting them faze him the slightest and summoned a Gaster Blaster to singe the top of her head.
"Not a great shot, are you?" asked Undyne, her hair smoking slightly. Sans just summoned a second blaster and knocked her in the chest with it. She took a swipe at it with her spear and smashed it to bits, hearing it release a strangled whimper before falling to dust.
Sans looked horrified. "you--!" He redoubled his attacks, pulling Undyne's soul left and right. She struggled to avoid his ruthless attacks, her health draining in the process. She checked her HP again-- it was so low, only 120 left and she hadn't even hit him once.
Frisk stood wide-eyed at the fight, terrified beyond belief. They didn't even know that Sans could summon those...things... what were they anyway? They could see how worn down Undyne looked. Even though the fish-woman wanted Frisk dead, she didn't deserve to be hurt like that. Frisk built up the courage, before shouting with a tear stained face, "SANS, STOP!"
Sans jerked, whipping around, "kid?" he looked towards where Frisk had came out of hiding.
"PLEASE!" The child begged, "D-DON'T HURT HER!" They whimpered, rubbing their eyes.
"i--"
Undyne jumped at him, pinning him to the ground while he was distracted, putting a spear up to his neck.
Sans looked up at her stupefied, before a humerus grin spread across his cheekbones, "jeez, haven't i taught you anything?" He disappeared, only for Undyne to whip around and see... nothing. No one was there. And no one came. She whirled around, frantically looking every which way like a marionette controlled by a cat, until the truth sank in.
Frisk and Sans were gone.
Undyne squinted, then sprinted for her home. Papyrus was there. She KNEW he could find them.
******
Frisk and Sans appeared in a room Frisk had never seen. It was clearly part of Waterfall, containing a single echo flower and had crystals dotting the ceiling, a river rushing by in front of them. Sans lazily walked over, and sat down on the old bench, leaning back and staring into the water. He reached under the bench and pulled out an already-sliced quiche, taking a piece out of the tray and taking a bite.
Frisk scrunched their nose at him, before signing, "(Do you even know how old that is?)"
"yeah," said Sans. "i put it there myself." He took another bite and offered a slice to Frisk."want some?"
Frisk smiled and shook their head. "(No thanks,)" they signed with a small giggle.
"suit yourself," said Sans, his mouth full.
Frisk frowned at him, "(Close your mouth when you eat!)" They pointed an accusing finger at him.
"heh, kid, does it really matter?" Sans said that phrase with twice as much food in his mouth. He took another bite and said, "ifs juff uh quiffce."
Frisk shook their head, pursing their lips together. "(Not just a quiche, but a gross stale one,)" they signed.
Suddenly, Sans heard something.
"Are you sure he's here?" asked a brash female voice.
"YES, YES! HE COMES HERE A LOT! HE EVEN HID A QUICHE HERE TO EAT." Sans stiffened. Papyrus!
Frisk recognized the voices too, looking to Sans for some sign of advice or what they were supposed to do.
Sans tucked the quiche in his hoodie and grabbed Frisk's hand. He then rounded a corner, and Frisk saw Papyrus and Undyne looking confused. But then, they were somehow elsewhere.
Undyne's face turned furiously fuschia, " UGH! He did the thing again! How does he do that?!"
"DO WHAT?" asked Papyrus, raising a brow at Undyne.
"The disappearing thing!" Undyne yelled, throwing her arms up like a five-year-old.
"NEVER ONCE HAVE I, THE GREAT PAPYRUS, WITNESSED MY DEAR BROTHER SANS DISAPPEAR." Papyrus said, matter-of-factly.
"Well then OBVIOUSLY you're missing something, because I JUST SAW HIM!!" She screamed, stabbing her finger into his ribcage to further her point.
Papyrus didn't take her outrage to heart, and shook it off, "WELL, UNDYNE, I MAY NOT HAVE A CLUE ABOUT WHAT YOU ARE SAYING, BUT AS YOU CAN SEE, HE IS NOT HERE, SO WE MUST GO ELSEWHERE, FOLLOW ME!" He happily turned around.
Undyne sighed, following her friend away.
******
Frisk felt themselves be basically thrown into the next room, slamming into a wall. They rubbed their forehead where they had collided, before turning around to find Sans wobbling on his feet, looking like he was dizzy.
Frisk looked to the monster, concerned, before signing, "(Are you okay?)"
Sans put his palm on his forehead, before plopping onto the floor, "magic... i used too much... just dizzy, don't worry."
Frisk sighed before looking around the bizarre room. It had a tornado of papers, socks, and other things in the corner, the bed was not made and had all the sheets knotted into a ball, and there was a treadmill in the middle of the room.
Frisk looked towards him confused, "(Where on earth are we?!)"
Sans continued rubbing his temple, " my room."
Frisk looked at him annoyed, "(You couldn't think of a better hiding spot?)"
He shook his head, "hey, look, i didn't have time to think, they were right there." he sighed, trying not to sound irritated, even though his head was pounding from overusing his magic. "and the door is locked."
"(Couldn't Undyne just kick the door down?)" asked Frisk.
"nah, it's the door of steel. not literally. but it's pretty strong." He smirked, gesturing towards the door.
Frisk half wanted to try to hit it, but knew they'd make themselves look stupid, so they decided not to.
Momentarily, they heard noise downstairs, they both knew exactly who it was, and turned towards the door.
Frisk held their breath, while Sans just hoped the door would stand at least a few blows, for he still hadn't gained enough magic to teleport, and had barely enough to even throw a single attack. He looked over, seeing his window. That would be a good place to go...but they were on the second floor.
They heard a pair of feet run up the stairs. Frisk noticed the window too. They ran over to the mattress and started hoisting it out the open window. Then they untangled the bedsheets and started tying them together into a long rope. The rope wasn't long enough, but the mattress would break their fall.
"good one, kid," Sans said with a smirk. He got up and held the rope as he heard the first blows rain down on the door. Frisk shimmied down the rope and landed on the mattress, quickly rolling off so Sans could go next. Sans knew he had to be a little bit more careful with only 1 HP, so he tied the rope to his windowsill and slid to the end of the rope. He took a breath, manifesting the magic he had, grabbing the gravity around his own soul. Weird, he thought to himself at the strange sensation, as he slowly dropped himself onto the mattress.
BOOM
Both their heads snapped up to the room as they heard another wave of blows. Then they heard a dramatic CRASH and Undyne's signature NGAH!
Frisk felt Sans grab their hand as they ran into the forest by the skeletons' house.
******
Undyne looked around the room, finding it empty... besides a trashnado and a treadmill and a lamp on a box. She overturned the lamp and ripped open the box, but there was nothing. And she was starting to give up. Then she noticed Papyrus staring at the window. She smirked.
Perfect.
