"Okey Vale it's time, do you have everything?" Uncle Flavio said, when both of us returned to the tent, followed by Angelo who was keeping his distance behind us.
Angelo's cheeks had blossomed when he realized that I had been in the trailer with Valentino. "Err, we have to go." was all he said when Valentino finally opened the door.
Uncle Flavio began handing Valentino his racing gear.
"Wow, look at you, my biggest fan." Valentino spotted Etienne.
Etienne was wearing a cap with Valentino's racing number on it and over his jacket he wore an oversized t-shirt also carrying the same number.
"Alicia, surprised to see you here, but I'm glad you could come support me too." Valentino smiled, as he noticed Alicia holding a small pennant with his racing number on.
"I'm here for business." She said, the pennant withering in her hands.
"Wish me luck." Valentino said, fitting the last glove on his hands.
I assumed he was referring to everybody, but his eyes were on me.
I discreetly shook my head, no way I was kissing him in front of Alicia, she would freak.
Valentino shrugged his shoulders and turned to his uncle instead. "You got this." Uncle Flavio said and handed Valentino his helmet. "I'll give you five dollars if you make it to the finals." he laughed.
I rolled my eyes.
"Ready?" Valentino said and turned to Angelo, who had been creeping in the back., Angelo nodded and they both put on their helmets and headed towards their bikes.
"Okey let's go!" Alicia joyously erupted, throwing Valentinos pennant in the bin. "Who's up for some sushi?" she continued
"What do you mean?" I stuttered, Etiennes hand in mine.
Alicia looked to me with wonder, "well we're done here aren't we?"
I looked to the ground in disgrace.
"Aren't we?" she repeated, now with her hands on her hips, which made her look like this giant pink teddy bear, in her fur coat.
"We wanna see the race." I mumbled.
"Why would you wanna see the race after...." Alicia paused as she looked to ponder. "Did something happen between you and Valentino?"
"What do you mean?" My cheeks were on fire.
"In the trailer, you were gone for a long time, did something happen between you two?"
I didn't answer, instead I looked to Etienne, he was gazing across the motor park, he was in his own little world.
"Oh, Lessy." she sighed, she wasn't angry she just looked at me with remorse.
My head dropped, "I really like him." I mumbled "And I know he likes me too, he's not like Dario, he won't hurt me."
Fury warmth serenaded me when Alicia slowly embraced me. "I know." she whispered.
Grabbing my shoulders she held me arm length, "Who wouldn't like you Alessia, you're the most amazing person I know." Her eyes began to water, "I still don't believe that getting in a new relationship this soon is a good idea."
"What about our double date?" I joked.
Alicia smiled.
"Can we go now, It's about to start." Etienne whined and removed some fur that was caught in his hair.
*******
Loud cheers filled the grandstand, the races began.
The quarter final consisted of 4 heats, where the five best times from each heat made it to the final race tomorrow. Valentino wasn't on until the last heat so for the moment we were cheering for Angelo who was racing in the first heat.
"Go Angelo!" Michelle, Angelos his little brother shouted, we had spotted him and his family when we made our way up the grandstands and decided to join them.
"He's good." I said. Angelo had a rough start falling behind a hive of other riders, but as the race went on he made up a lot of places and controlled the race from there. Angelo made it to the quarter finals, finishing second best.
"When is Valentino racing?" Alicia shouted over the noise from the shredding engines and loud cheers.
"In the last heat." I shouted back.
"Let's get something to eat then." She said.
"They won't have sushi here." I joked.
"Etienne are you hungry." She asked. He nodded.
"Were going to go get some food, you stay here." Alicia said, grabbing Etienne.
"Why do I have to stay." I whined
"Because someone has to guard my coat." She threw the coat off her shoulders and they made their way down the stands.
"Aren't you cold in that dress of yours sweetie." said the lady next to me, it was Angelos mother, a plump lady with wrinkly red lips and white short hair that curled around her ears.
I gave her a light smile and shook my head.
"Angelo told me you were here yesterday, Leonard and I could not believe It. We haven't seen you here for ages."
I nervously laughed in response, no one was supposed to see me here, especially not today, Uncle Flavio, I wasn't to worried about, he could barely remember where I lived, but people like Angelo's family, who knows my mother, they were a problem.
"How is your mother by the way, I am meant to go by the shop soon enough, I've heard it's going great." She smiled.
"Err, she is alright." I nervously stuttered.
"Where are you going sweetie, the next race is just about to start." Angelos mother asked as I rapidly grabbed Alicia's coat and was headed down the grandstands.
"Just getting some refreshments." I shouted behind me, I ran down the stands.
I was desperately gasping for air at the bottom of the stands. I felt dizzy from the millions of thoughts that were roaming in my head, the recurring thought was that we had to get home now, before someone else see's us.
I gazed through the sea of people, trying to find Alicia and Etienne, I cursed the fact that the fur coat was with me and not on Alicia, I would have easily spotted her then.
They were not in line for any of the food stands nor were they in line for the bathrooms.
"Uncle Flavio, have you seen Alicia and Etienne?" I panted, I had gone back to Valentino's sponsor tent where I found Uncle Flavio selling more merchandise.
"Alicia, yes." He said. "Great, where are they?" I asked, looking behind me like I'd just missed them.
"She was just here minutes ago, looking for your little brother.".
"What!" I shouted, "What do you mean, looking for my little brother."
Uncle Flavio had jumped at me suddenly shouting.
"Yes, she said he disappeared."
My painting escalated.
"Wow!" Uncle Flavio came around his desk and grabbed me as I lost my footing.
"Should we call someone."
"Yeah...call...Alicia." I said, between the heavy breathing. My hand was trembling handing Uncle Flavio my phone.
He dialed the number and soon someone answered. "Alicia...It's Flavio...Where are you?...and Etienne...calm down...okey don't worry...see you soon."
"What did she say?" My voice was shaky.
"She'll be here soon."
"And Etienne?"
Uncle Flavio gave me a serious look, "We'll find him, don't worry."
Minutes later Alicia came running, "I'm so sorry Lessy." she said in distress, tears in her eyes.
"What happened where Is Etienne?" I said angrily.
Alicia explained how she and Etienne stood in line for some hamburgers, she admitted that she had been busy fiddling with her phone and when she had turned around to asked which burger Etienne wanted, he was gone.
"I'll make some calls, I'm sure someone has seen him walking around the track." Uncle Flavio said and disappeared behind the tent.
Alicia and I took it upon ourselves to go look for him again.
We went back to the burger line to see if he had returned. "Etienne, Etienne!" No Etienne.
Back to the bathrooms, "Etienne, Etienne!" No Etienne.
By the time we returned to the grandstands the sun had gone down and bright lights illuminated the whole motor park.
"He's not here either", I whined. Angelo's family was also nowhere to be found.
"Don't worry we'll find him." Alicia said.
"Yeah and when we do I'll kill him, we should have never come here." I said as I took a seat.
I observed as clouds of steam formed out of peoples mouths.
"Do you think he's cold?"
"Who?"
"Etienne, do you think he's freezing somewhere?" I said, my voice was shaky.
"No he's fine, he was wearing a jacket and that t-shirt he got from Valentino's Uncle." Alicia said.
"We should get back to the tent, see if Uncle Flavio has heard anything." I said.
Alicia nodded.
We made our way down the grandstands again and towards the tent.
"Alessia!" A voice was heard shouting.
Looking for where the voice had come from, we spotted Angelo who was by his trailer, celebrating with his family.
We approached them.
"Not too bad huh, second best in my heat after a shitty start." He said proudly.
"Yeah, he's the best." Michelle, his little brother said.
I really tried forcing a smile, but seeing Michelle reminded me of Etienne.
"What's wrong sweetie?" Angelo's mother said, noticing my anxious expression.
"Etienne..."
"Yes sweetie?"
My lips were trembling, "Etienne, he's missing." I said, tears creeping in the back of my eyes.
"Again!" Angelo shouted, which made me want to punch him for a second.
Alicia sensed my tension and threw her arm around me.
"Yeah, we're gonna go see if he returned to Valentino's tent." she said, slightly pulling me away.
"Don't worry hun, we'll keep an eye out for your brother." Said Angelo's mother.
Back at the tent there was also celebration.
The table where all of the Valentino merchandise had been, was almost cleared, only a few broken pennants laid abandoned. Flashing camera lights were seen flickering under the tent, a handful of kids were lining up to have their pictures taken with Valentino, who was happily posing with them. He was sweaty and still dressed in his race suit.
"Good racing today Valentino, we are rooting for you tomorrow." A father with his son said, they were leaving after getting their picture taken. "Thank you, I'll do my best" Valentino chuckled.
"Your gonna make me go broke if you keep betting me money." Uncle Flavio laughed and handed Valentino some money.
Valentino looked to answer his Uncle when he suddenly spotted us.
"Lessy" He shouted and pushed pass some people in his way.
Without hesitation he embraced me and planted a kiss on my lips, he caught me by surprise I hadn't even closed my eyes.
I could feel Alicia stiffen beside me, she let out a forceful cough and Valentino broke the kiss.
He wore a huge grin.
"Ey, you fooled me." Uncle Flavio exclaimed. "You never told me she was coming because she was your girlfriend.
Valentino mockingly waved the money infront of his uncle, who rolled his eyes.
Uncle Flavio seemed to have forgotten all about Etienne, I thought.
"Did you guys enjoy the race?" Valentino asked.
It suddenly hit me that because we were out looking for Etienne we had just missed Valentino's heat.
Valentino suddenly leaned towards me. Not another kiss, I thought as I closed my eyes, preparing for the impact.
"Thank you for the good luck kiss" he whispered.
A lump started swelling in my throat as I looked for words. "I...I'm sorry." I mumbled
"What?" he said, not hearing my words.
My mouth went dry, "I'm..."
"Hallo!" Alicia suddenly shouted, everyone turned to her.
"We have other things to focus on, have you heard anything about Etienne?" She said firmly.
Uncle Flavio who looked surprised by Alicia's sudden outburst, nervously shook his head, "No one seen anything." he said.
Valentino looked to Alicia then looked to me."What's going on?"
"Etienne is missing, he's been missing for a while now." Tears began running down my cheeks.
A approaching voice interrupted us, "Alessia, Alessia!" It was Angelos mother, she was struggling as she was running towards us, her ballon hips dangling on each side.
"Alessia they got em!" She said, finally approaching, her face was heated and tomato red.
"Etienne?" I shouted.
"Yes and the police are on their way!"
"Police?" Alicia repeated.
My heart began to pound heavily in my chest.
"Some man had him by the side of the track, we spotted them when they were on their way out of the park."
"What!" I shouted
Angelo's mother led the way as Me, Valentino, Alicia and Uncle Flavio followed. And by the bottom of the hill that led up to the gate that exited the park, Angelo and his father were seen holding on to a tall skinny man with a dark scruffy beard. The old man was cursing heavily as he fought to get out of their grip. "Let me go you fucking idiots, let me go!" He was heard shouting.
Many people that were on their way out the park, stopped to watched the bizarre scene that took place at the bottom of the hill.
"Let him go!" Etienne cried, he and Michelle was standing a bit away from the scene.
"Etienne!" I shouted.
"Boys get away from there!" Angelo's mother shouted and waved for them to come to us.
"Lessy!" Etienne cried and ran into my embrace. "Tell them to stop they are hurting him." Etienne cried.
Alicia suddenly gasped, the old man managed to set himself free and immediately used his free arm to punch Angelo in the face. Angelo fell onto the ground covering his nose that had begun to bleed.
Valentino quickly ran towards the scene where he helped Angelo's father pin the old man to the ground. Half of the old man's face was covered in mud as they dipped him in the ground.
Families that had stopped to watch, quickly grabbed their children and moved towards the gates as the fight escalated.
Despite the mud that covered half the old man's face, I could never forget those fading eyes and husky voice.
"Nooo!" I shouted and ran towards them.
"Let him go!" I began pounding on Valentino's back for him to let go of the old man.
"Ah, Lessy what are you doing!" He shouted in pain.
"Let him go, that's my grandfather!" I cried.
Valentino looked to me and then to the muddy old man before letting go. Angelo's father let the old man drop to the ground where he fell to his knees.
"That's my grandfather." I mumbled and dropped to my knees beside him, tears were flowing down my cheeks.
In the background the wailing sound of police sirens became louder.
