we mad-dog him
"What the hell was that!?"
Pope threw his arms up, still soaked to the bone and fuming. He paced back and forth in front of the Pogues, minus Kiara. The others watched him with sullen expressions. Their clothes weren't the only thing drenched, but their moods were too.
After fleeing the scene, the Pogues took shelter in what looked to be a dumping ground beside the shore. Surrounded by debris and spare metal parts, they were hidden from plain sight but still not out of the woods.
"Why would they want to kidnap Kiara? It doesn't make any sense-"
"It's called bait," JJ interrupted, leaning against an abandoned shed.
Bianca could feel JJ's glare burning against her skin. Suddenly, the boy shot to his feet and punched the metal shed behind him. Bianca flinched without meaning to. She could tell he was furious, and not just with their unfortunate predicament but with her too.
"I mean, what were you thinking, Bianca!?" JJ's fists balled at his sides, the muscles in his arms taut. "They could've taken you too!"
"He would've drowned if we didn't go back for him, JJ," Her eyes remained trained on her hands in her lap, unable to meet his gaze.
JJ threw his arms up, "Yeah, well, now Kie's gone-"
"Are you saying this is my fault?" She finally lifted her narrowed eyes to match the heat in his.
The Pogues shared antsy looks, thoroughly uncomfortable with being wedged in between their lover's spat. If they interrupted, they risked being burned too but they also didn't have time to sit around and argue.
"No, but we're in the middle of Barbados with no money, no way home, and now, Kiara is missing," JJ exhaled sharply, shaking his head.
Honestly, Bianca wasn't really sure what she was thinking. She wasn't, she supposed. All she knew was that someone was injured and she needed to make sure they didn't drown. But she understood where JJ was coming from because he also infuriated her for the same reason— recklessly throwing his life away.
"I know," Bianca huffed, crossing her arms over her chest. "I'm sorry, I didn't think any of this would happen."
"Exactly!" JJ suddenly burst. The concern in his tone was evident but he could express it the only way he knew how. With anger, "That's exactly my point, Bianca- you didn't think. You weren't thinking! You can't do shit like that, okay!? Don't you get that?!"
Bianca scoffed harshly, "That's rich coming from you."
She turned her chin away stubbornly, refusing to meet her boyfriend's heated glare. She knew she should have listened to JJ and got out of the plane when she could instead of going back for Portis. She could own that. But having him berate her like a child in front of all their friends?
It made her feel small. Weak. Pathetic. How she used to feel when she was Rafe.
Bianca's cheeks burned with embarrassment, knowing the others were watching her every move. She didn't remember the last time she had been this furious with JJ. Probably at the Boneyard when they first met.
"Guys, can we focus, please?" Pope interjected in their brief moment of silence. The awkwardness was like a thick blanket, suffocating the air out of them, "Kie is gone. We don't have time to sit around and argue with each other."
"I am so sick of this," Sarah brushed her soaked strands away from her face while John B rubbed her back in comfort. "Do you think that there's any way we could trust the cops?"
"The cops? You're joking, right!?" JJ snapped and strode to stand in front of the group. "You seriously think your daddy and hers haven't called them already?" He pointed over to his girlfriend.
Bianca's eyes squeezed shut, her shoulders hunched. She knew JJ didn't understand the weight his words held, that he was merely overcome by his rage but she still pursed her lips at the reminder of her father. Her heart ached so much that she could barely find the energy to defend herself.
But Bianca didn't need to because the others did it for her, "Dude!" Pope chastised.
"Alright, enough!" John B stood up, pushing the blond backward by the chest. He lowered his voice only for JJ's ears, "Back off, man."
JJ put his arms up in surrender. His jaw clenched as he rolled his shoulders back, attempting to dissipate all the pent-up anger. Instead, he went and leaned his forearm against a nearby tree, inhaling and exhaling deep breaths.
"I have a crazy idea," Pope piped up again, now sitting on the rock beside Cleo. "Why don't we call my parents?"
"And say what, Pope?" John B turned on his heel.
"And say we're alive," He deadpanned. "I haven't seen my family in I don't know how long. They're probably worried sick about me!"
Bianca contemplated this. As much as she dreaded going home, she knew telling her mother she wasn't dead in a ditch somewhere was the right thing to do. But the moment she did, Bianca knew she couldn't lie and pretend any longer.
"I could call my mom?" Bianca offered softly. "Maybe ask her to wire us some money or something?"
"And put them in danger?" John B raised his eyebrows pointedly.
"Yeah, no, my bad, John B. Let's just keep running around like criminals," Bianca narrowed her eyes to which the brunet flipped her off.
"I got a better idea," JJ whirled back around to face the group. He reached into his back pocket and pulled out a wallet along with some cash attached to the clip, "And faster."
"Whose is that?" Sarah's eyebrows furrowed.
"You seriously think I'm gonna go through someone's backpack and not pinch their wallet?" He scoffed before pulling out the ID card from within and began reading aloud. "Jimmy Portis, 101 Cattle Wash. I bet that's where they got Kiara. Alright?" He outstretched his hand to show John B.
"Were we looking at the same guy? There's no way Portis is behind this," Bianca rolled her eyes.
"Maybe not but it's the best shot we got right now," JJ's tongue poked the inside of his cheek in annoyance. "So, that's where we're going."
"That's conceivable," Pope lifted his head from his hands. "But can we at least think this through?"
"You got a better idea, Pope?" JJ demanded before backing away, already knowing the answer. "Come on, 101 Cattle Wash. That's where we're going!"
The Pogues glanced between each other with weary looks. They weren't sure what kind of trap JJ was leading them straight into but one thing was for sure; they were going after Kiara. It was one of the many rules Cleo had been studiously taking notes of; never leave a Pogue behind.
The group took off on foot, not quite sure how far their destination was or what it looked like. They could've been walking for hours but the westerly direction of the sun was the only sort of guidance telling them the time. Its harsh rays beat down on their already sunburnt skin and dried their sopping clothes.
"Really helps there's no names on the streets," JJ scoffed after they'd been walking for an hour or so, asking the locals for help.
"Just let me handle it," Cleo told them before breaking off from the group huddled together.
She jogged toward a small beach-side restaurant and asked for directions. The man pointed over toward a run-down old shack down the street and the Pogues followed her gaze.
"Blue house? Thanks, man. I 'ppreciate you," Cleo saluted him before rejoining the others and leading the way.
"Let's do it," JJ nodded.
The group made their way toward the building till they stumbled across a sign reading '101 Cattle Wash.' The house itself was mediocre if it weren't for the stark blue-haint paint. It was the same hue they saw on many porch ceilings in houses back in the Outer Banks and all across the South.
"This is it," JJ announced. "Let's go around back."
The Pogues rounded the metal fence, ducking down behind the surrounding shrubbery. JJ kept an eye on Bianca whose arms were crossed over her chest in front of her. He could tell she was mad just by the way she refused to even look at him. Angry was, after all, her favorite emotion.
JJ sighed, running a hand through his wind-tousled hair. He walked faster to catch up to her, "B," He whispered. "Hey, B."
Bianca's eyes flickered over her shoulder at the boy before point-blank ignoring him. She kept walking, barely acknowledging his presence.
A small pout formed on JJ's lips, "Bianca... B?" He tried again, his tone almost a whine. "Princess-"
"What, JJ?!" Bianca whispered harshly but kept trailing behind the group who were walking through the back gate.
"Are you mad at me?" His frown deepened. "Did I do something-"
"I don't know, JJ, did you?" She rolled her eyes at his cluelessness.
JJ paused, "...No?" Although, it sounded more like a question.
He knew he was wrong when Bianca shot him a glare over her shoulder. An irritated scoff fell from her lips and she slammed the back gate behind her, forcing JJ to take a step back.
"Okay, wait- no- yes!" JJ pushed through the fence, accidentally banging the gate shut which caused the other Pogues to whirl around and shush him. "My bad- sorry," He turned to Bianca again and rubbed the back of his neck, "Yes- I feel like that's the only correct answer right now."
Bianca huffed and made sure the Pogues were out of earshot before whirling around to face JJ. She was prepared to curse him out after the way he spoke to her earlier but upon seeing his puppy-like eyes, she felt her rage melt away like honey.
Bianca let out a breath she'd been holding and shook her head, wondering how she'd gotten so soft. Probably somewhere along the way when she fell in love with him.
"JJ, what you said back there? I get it. And I'm sorry," Bianca conceded before crossing her arms over her chest defensively. "I shouldn't have gone back for Portis and I know I put Kiara's life in danger but you were basically lecturing me in front of all our friends! It was humiliating!"
JJ's eyes widened, his lips parting. He was so overcome by his steaming rage at that moment, he completely forgot. Bianca angled herself away from him and JJ instantly felt guilt creep up his spine for the way he spoke to her.
"Okay, I'm sorry," The boy reached for one of her hands but she drew away. "Maybe, I was a little harsh-"
"A little?" Bianca scoffed.
JJ groaned, she never made it easy for him, "Fine, a lot harsh," He threw his arms up in surrender. "I- I don't know, B. I just..."
Bianca eyed him carefully— the dark circles under his eyes and his once broad shoulders, now worn down from stress. He looked exhausted and the girl had an inkling she didn't appear much worse off either.
Bianca decided to take pity on JJ and put him out of his misery by finally breaking the silence between them, "You can't protect me from everything, JJ."
"But I can try," Her boyfriend sighed softly, glad to have a reprieve from her fury. "B, have full faith you can take care of yourself, alright? But it's not gonna stop me from worrying, okay?" He placed his hands on her shoulders, eyes boring deeply into hers. "I need to know whether I can count on you not to pull something like this again and- and throw your life away like it means nothing."
Bianca remained silent, a lump forming in her throat. The gravity in JJ's tone told her maybe they shouldn't have been having this conversation outside Portis' home. She'd never seen him be this serious about... well, anything.
"Bianca," JJ spoke gravely. "If you have to choose, I need you to choose yourself. Please," There was a certain desperation behind his gaze. "Can I count on you?"
The moment the word please slipped from his lips, Bianca knew she was a goner. God, she'd do anything for this boy.
"Yes," Bianca huffed, her crossed arms falling limp at her sides. "You can count on me."
"Thank you," JJ's shoulders sagged in relief, allowing his head to hang low. He let go of her shoulders before following after the others, "Alright. Come on."
The group was busy trying to figure out a way into Portis' home, having scanned all four walls. While both the back and front doors were locked, John B noticed a nearby window that was left half open.
"Hey," He whistled to the others who quickly gathered around him. "Window?"
"Yeah," JJ nodded.
"Here- you want some help?" Pope offered but John B waved him off.
"No, I got this."
The brunet scaled the blue-tiled walls and the group watched in silence except for Pope who muttered a quiet 'careful' when he nearly slipped. John B managed to get the window almost fully open when JJ started to get antsy behind them.
"Woah- woah- yo, get off-" The blond boy muttered, scuffing his combat boots against the grass. "Get off!"
Bianca glanced over her shoulder with a frown, noticing a couple of crabs slowly surrounding them. She rolled her eyes, "JJ, stop annoying the crabs."
"Annoying the- but they're the ones coming after me!" He protested when one of them climbed atop his shoe. He reached down to pick it up, "Get off! Dude, get o-"
The boy let out a pained yelp, drawing the attention of the other Pogues who began shushing him again. They whirled around to witness him shaking his hand frantically where a crab's pincer gripped onto his thumb. He hopped around, writhing in pain until finally, the crab fell to the floor and scuttled away.
"Shh! Hey!" Pope's whispered harshly, eyes wild with frustration. "What are you doing? Does the element of surprise mean nothing to you!?"
"It turned my thumb purple!" JJ tried to reason.
"Shh! Relax!" Cleo shook her head, chastising him. "It's just a crab, man."
"I'm being surrounded right now, goddamnit," JJ panted heavily. "Damn little sea spider-"
The boy backed away from the creatures but accidentally bumped into Bianca who shot him a glare. She grabbed his arm and turned him away from the crabs, "Why do these things always happen to you?"
"Dunno," JJ shrugged, holding his thumb up to his lips in an attempt to soothe the pinch when he realized he had a better remedy. He feigned a pout and glanced up through his lashes, "Kiss it better?"
Bianca's glare narrowed, staring him down and it was quickly dawning on JJ that he was more likely to get a black eye than a kiss. The boy gulped and began lowering his hand.
"Actually, you know what? Nevermind-"
But before he could, Bianca took his wrist and pressed her lips against his thumb before dropping his arm again, "Never ask me to do that again."
"Or what?" He challenged.
"Or I will shove your thumb so far up your ass everyone's going to think you're sucking it."
And with that, she turned on her heel to face the others. JJ chuckled, walking up behind her and placing the same sort of chaste kiss against her shoulder. Bianca glanced away so he couldn't notice the smile she was stifling.
The group waited while John B snuck through the window to unlock the front door of Portis' home. One by one, they made their way inside, treading carefully against the wooden floorboards.
"I'll take the front," Cleo whispered before glancing over her shoulder at the others. "Take the back."
They all began opening cupboard doors and random rooms, searching for any trace of Kiara. Apart from the occasional scatter of belongings across the coffee table, there was no mess to indicate someone had been here recently.
There was no sign of struggle, no hint of someone trying to escape, which Bianca knew Kiara would've attempted by now. Instead, she followed Pope who was scouring the living room for any clues as to where she might be.
"Kiara?" Sarah whispered from the kitchen.
"Kie?" John B echoed from one of the bedrooms.
"Sarah, no one in there?" JJ questioned to which the blonde girl shook her head.
"No."
"No one there?"
"There's no one in there," John B reappeared from the bedroom.
"Okay, well, if she's not here, where is she?" JJ deadpanned as they regrouped near the front door.
Pope's voice suddenly cut through the air, "John B..." He trailed off. "John B?"
The Routledge boy turned at the urgency in his tone and headed over to where Pope was staring at an old painting. Upon closer inspection, they realized it was of a burning boat, the sails scorched with flames.
"Yo- hey, B," John B whistled to get her attention from where she was sifting through Portis' mail.
Bianca's eyebrows drew together when she neared the painting, recognizing the inscription at the bottom immediately. Her heart dropped at the words scrawled against the dusty frame, 'SAN JOSE'.
"Recognise that?" Pope arched an eyebrow at her.
"What?" JJ appeared over their shoulders. "Find something?"
"Holy shit," John B puffed out his cheeks.
"...It's a burning boat," JJ shrugged.
"This is San Jose," Bianca didn't tear her gaze away from the artwork.
"It's from Denmark's diary," Pope explained. "This is the ship that Captain Limbery stole the cross from," There was a sharp edge to his voice when he spoke.
"And the Merchant gold," John B added while Sarah peeped over at the painting.
"Great, whatever," JJ dismissed and started to back away. "It's just about the gold. It's not about Kiara. It doesn't help us."
John B blew out a breath, "Well, Portis is a treasure guy. This is too close to our boat."
"Just let it go. That's not why we're here," JJ ground out.
But before he could leave, Bianca interjected, "No, no- JJ, it does. Why else would Portis have a painting of the San Jose up on his wall? Do you really think that guy is a connoisseur for the fine arts?" When the confused expression on JJ's face didn't disappear, she sighed. "No, JJ, he's not. He's just like every other sleazy dirtbag looking for the gold."
"Okay, I see the vision but cool it with the name-calling," John B pursed his lips. "We are also sleazy dirtbags looking for the gold."
"Yeah, but the difference is, I don't associate myself with you," Bianca countered.
"I don't associate myself with you," The brunet mocked in a high-pitched nasally voice, earning a glare from the girl.
"John B," Sarah warned from behind before another argument could break out.
"She started it!" John B's jaw dropped.
"And I'm finishing it," The blonde deadpanned.
"Bianca's right," Pope interrupted their bickering. "There's no way a guy like Portis is orchestrating this whole thing and by the looks of the guys who took Kie, whoever's behind this has the whole island wrapped around their finger."
"So, whoever Portis is working for knows that we know about the cross," Bianca hummed.
JJ lifted a finger, as if he wanted to protest, "...Wait, so-"
"But how?" Sarah interrupted him. "The only people that knew about the gold and the cross on the ship were us."
"And the crew," Cleo piped up, joining the conversation. "They pulled the cross up after me and Pope tried to drop it in the ocean."
"You think it was Eberhimi?" The blonde girl frowned.
"No," Cleo shook her head again. "I know him. He can't be trusted but he also don't pull that much weight here in Barbados. This is something bigger."
A brief silence settled between the Pogues, their minds working a mile a minute to figure out who was behind Kiara's kidnapping. However, there was one person whose cogs had stopped turning.
"Uh..." JJ pursed his lips. "You lost me."
"JJ," Bianca groaned.
"Hey- I tried really hard to listen that time," He whined.
The girl sighed and patted his cheek softly, "I know. I could tell," She placed a quick kiss on his shoulder. "Good job."
Cleo, who had migrated over to the window upon hearing the distant rumble of an engine, whistled to grab their attention, "Guys, guys, guys."
Bianca jogged over, following her gaze, "What?"
"Shit, it's Portis," Sarah joined them, her gut twisting anxiously. From where they were standing, she could just make out the man getting out of his truck and slamming the door shut.
"Shit," JJ cursed and signaled the other boys. "Yo, he's back."
"Do we run?" Sarah chewed her lower lip, contemplating all their options.
The Pogues froze at the question but Bianca's glare hardened. They didn't come this far to not get the answers they deserved. A flicker of rage burned white-hot within her, refusing to be extinguished by the guilt. The girl she thought she left behind, the one so consumed by the desire for revenge, wasn't as dead as she thought.
Bianca's eyes flickered down to Cleo's knife barely sticking out of her pocket. There was still some part of her angry enough at the world to keep fighting. So, she did.
"No," Bianca's voice was calm, though there was a sharp edge to it. "We mad-dog him."
The Pogues' glanced at each other in silent agreement. They scrambled to find places to hide, except a certain blue-eyed boy who was quietly grumbling in the corner.
JJ kicked a fallen coin across the floorboards and scoffed "Oh, now she wants to mad-dog him."
Portis stepped onto his porch with a groan. His shoes creaked against the wood while pocketing his phone away after getting off a call regarding the Flying Fish. He'd been quite worried about its electrics being fried with the water.
"Damn it," The man cursed, eyeing the crab in his living room scuttling away. He must've forgotten to lock the front door again, "I've had it with you guys."
Just as he began to take his hat off, Portis felt a cold, sharp blade being pressed against his adam's apple. His heart leaped to his throat, muscles freezing in place.
A chilling voice came from behind him, "You have three seconds – exactly three fucking seconds to tell me where Kiara is, and then I'm not going to give you a warning or a countdown. I'm just going to slit your throat."
Bianca pressed Cleo's knife harder against Portis' throat, squeezing the handle to hide her trembling hands. She held her breath, trying to sound braver than she felt. Her nerves were shot with adrenaline, not in the right mind to be thinking straight.
But Bianca didn't care. All she knew was that she needed to get Kiara back. By any means possible. Her heart was pounding so loud in her ears, she barely heard Portis' shaky voice when he spoke up again.
"O-okay, alright- I'll tell you. I'll tell you everything," His gaze flickered over his shoulder, barely catching a glimpse of the familiar girl. "Just- just put the knife down."
The Pogues watched from their hiding places as Bianca shifted on her feet, glaring at the man. While the girl hadn't let her guard drop, she was so focused on getting him to talk, she missed the way his hand twitched. But JJ noticed.
Portis lifted his arm to strike back but before his elbow could meet her gut, JJ dived across the room and tackled him. They both landed on the floor with a heavy grunt in front of Bianca who faltered backward, not expecting it.
Portis scrambled to his feet but before he could run outside, Pope cornered him and shoved him back into the middle of the room. The Heyward boy wrapped his arm around the man's neck in a chokehold, "Come here!"
Portis struggled, clawing at Pope's arm who was quickly growing tired. John B lurched forward to help him only for Jimmy to kick him away. The brunet heaved for breath, his back hitting the wall as he fell to the floor with a loud thud, taking a couple of paintings down with him. Sarah was at his side a second later, helping him to his feet.
Pope only managed to land one punch to Portis' gut before he was thrown over the man's shoulder and onto the ground. This time, when Portis tried to run into the kitchen, JJ put his leg in front of him, causing him to trip onto the floor.
"I got him- get up!" JJ commanded, grabbing the man off the floor by his shirt and shoving him against the kitchen table. "Sit down!"
"Okay, okay, okay-" Portis squirmed, choking on his spit. He writhed in a final attempt to escape but Cleo rounded the other side of the table and yanked on his hair. Together, the two held him down till he stopped fighting, "You guys really shouldn't be here right now."
Bianca came from behind them and pressed the knife against Portis' throat once more, "Alright," She scowled. This time, the blade drew blood, "Let's try this again. Tell us where Kiara is and we'll burn your house to the ground."
Portis frowned, "Uh, don't you mean or?"
Bianca rolled her eyes, "Fine, tell us where Kiara is or we'll burn your house to the ground."
Pope arched an eyebrow, "That seems like a pretty crucial conjunction-"
"Pope!" Bianca huffed in exasperation.
"Where is she, Jimmy?!" JJ demanded, his clenched fist tightening around Portis' collar.
"Answer the man!" Cleo tugged harder on Jimmy's hair, causing him to wince.
Portis scoffed humourlessly, "You really don't want to know," His gaze flickered between each of them.
Suddenly, Sarah appeared with a bottle of Tabasco sauce and held it against his chin, "Talk," Bianca stifled a frown at the action but chose not to question it. "Who took her!? Was it Ward!?"
"Ward?" Portis let out a laugh. "Who's Ward?" This didn't surprise Bianca. Sarah's paranoia over her father being behind everything was clearly clouding her judgment, "You guys really don't understand who you're messing with."
"Then, we'll call the cops," Sarah threatened.
"Sure, go to the cops," He shook his head, forcing the blonde girl to pull back the sauce bottle. "See how far that gets you. This guy owns the cops! He's got eyes all over the island looking for you. All of you. He's a big man, the Kingfish."
"The Kingfish," JJ repeated, his eyes narrowing.
Suddenly, Pope returned from the living room where he'd been sifting through the bag Portis brought with him, "Hey, what's this?" He lifted a brown envelope for the others to see.
"Hey, take your hands off my shit!" Portis began flailing around and Bianca took a step back to avoid being hit.
"Hey, quiet down!" Cleo warned. "Quiet!"
"Shut up!" JJ shoved him against the table again.
Bianca removed the knife from his neck and nodded, "Open it," Whatever this was, it was evidently important to him.
"What is it?" JJ craned his neck to see as Pope began ripping through the envelope.
John B took the contents from Pope's hands, holding the wad of bills in front of Portis who groaned in frustration, "Ah, man-"
"What's that, Jimmy?" JJ seethed, his grip tightening. "Is that the payoff? Is that the payoff for Kiara, Jimmy?" The man merely grunted from exertion, still trying to escape, which only served to piss the blond off further. "Is it!?"
"Talk!" Cleo commanded again.
Pope frowned at the stamp on the corner of the envelope, lifting it again to reveal the small inscription, "Hey- what's Vaux Hall?"
"You really don't wanna go there, man," Jimmy warned, shaking his head. "That's the lion's den."
"That's it," John B nodded. "That's where Kie is. Come on, Pope-" Before the others could get in another word, he was sprinting outside.
"You really don't wanna go there!" Portis called after him.
"Do we look afraid?" Cleo arched an eyebrow.
Portis' gaze darted between each of them. He could tell they thought they were brave. In his eyes, they were incredibly stupid to try and take on the Kingfish, "You should be."
John B returned a second later with Pope, holding hangers of clothing— button-ups, pants, shorts— in his hands, "Let's go. Come on, it's not worth it! Come on, Bianca- JJ- Cleo, let's go, come on!" He grabbed Sarah's hand and began tugging her out the door. "Portis, we're taking some clothes. Deal with it!" He yelled over his shoulder.
The rest was a flurry of chaos as the six Pogues escaped carrying bundles of fabrics. They ran out the front porch while Portis chased them out, "Big mistake! You're just going to make it worse for her!"
Their shoes hit the gravelly path, the sun raining down on them and although it wasn't much, it still felt like a victory. Sarah threw her middle finger up at the man, basking in the glory of a win. Finally.
Portis stuck his head out the window John B snuck in through, still hailing curses at them, "Hey! I didn't tell you shit, okay!? Remember that!"
Cleo fell in stride beside Bianca, "What you did back there? That was bad, girl," She scoffed, stifling a small smile. "But steal my knife again and I'll gut you like I did those fish on the island."
Sarah let out a giggle at this while Bianca handed her knife back, "Duly noted."
Bianca glanced over her shoulder at JJ whose eyes were already on her. She knew he wouldn't be happy after the stunt she pulled with Portis, especially after his warning earlier.
Whether it was selfless or stupid, Bianca wasn't really thinking of herself or what might happen. But while they were running, she found that the thought of dying to save someone else, or even just dying, didn't scare her as much as it should have. In fact, it was comforting, almost.
More like a memory, than a faraway dream.
