CHAPTER 4
I nearly fainted when I heard those words.
I, Daisy Nickels, will be attending... a crummy public school.
I sat there completely flabbergasted for a few minutes until I got called over for dinner. Sitting down next to Natalie at the basic, dark wood rectangular table, I stared at the plate before me.
"What is this?" I asked confused. Everything looked so colorful and messy. Nothing like what my French chef would prepare.
"Well that's katsudon, tuna mayo onigiri, curry, and strawberry mousse for dessert!" Aunt Hana smiled. "I figured I'd go back to our half heritage and make some traditional Japanese foods tonight."
I gave a dumbfounded look. I still had no idea what the foods were. Mother never really made Japanese food. She mostly just let the chef do all the cooking.
Natalie, noticing my discomfort whispered to me, "Katsudon is rice that's been topped off with tonkatsu and egg, cooked in a savory broth. Tuna mayo onigiri is simply seaweed wrapped rice balls with tuna salad on the inside. Oh, and the strawberry mousse is literally just a cup of pink strawberry mousse with a strawberry on top."
Okay, I've had tonkatsu before; just sliced, fried or baked chicken cutlets. And I've had onigiri before, but not with stuff in the middle. I still, however, was confused by the muddy looking bowl that sat in front of me. "And this?"
"Well that's just Japanese curry and rice," Natalie smiled.
I looked up at mother who was happily eating her food. Calmly dipping her chopsticks in and out of the tonkatsu bowl, she ate as if nothing was new to her. I wonder why she never made stuff like this back at home then?
After saying grace and breaking my chopsticks, I took a brave bite of the katsudon. My taste buds instantly came alive. So this is what I've been missing my entire life! I greedily dug into everything.
Some time later, we all finished eating and chatting about nothing of importance really. I looked down at my dishes, everything was eaten. Well, except for the curry. Yeah, I don't know how people eat that slosh.
"Hana, that was delicious! Just like how tou-san used to make," mother complimented.
"Yeah, I know, I got all of the recipes from him before he and mom moved back to Kyoto," aunt Hana smiled, grabbing a few of the dishes.
"Oh, we can all help, mom!" Natalie perked up.
Oh speak for yourself honey, my $150 manicure is still intact and I am not about to ruin it over some filthy dishes.
"Oh no, that's okay! You girls go have fun! Me and your mom have a lot of catching up to do!" Mother smiled.
I smirked, happily getting up from the table. Of course mother let me slide on that one. I never had to do any chores at home, so you better believe I won't be doing any physical labor here.
I began unpacking my things when Natalie walked into the room. "Do you like what I did to your side?" She cheerfully asked. "I thought you might like pink a lot, so I put a pink duvet set and pillows down on your bed. We bought everything yesterday as soon as your mom called us."
Still with a smile on her face, she glided over to the small, white bedside table near my bed. "Oh, and I plugged in this cute, fuschia pink lamp to sit on your bedside table."
I took a look at the room. My bed was on the left, against the wall. Hers was on the right, against the big window. There were the two, small white wood bedside tables. Besides the lamp sitting there, mine was empty, of course, while hers was cluttered with poorly taken pictures of her and her friends. Near the end of the window, there was a single medium sized desk that sat her laptop and a few mechanical pencils. The last remaining furniture was medium sized white dresser next to the desk.
The only thing I could really think of was, 'this room sure needs redecorating. Or at least some wallpaper to cover up these boring white walls.'
"It's not.. completely horrible," I said, trying to be nice, and not insult her poor, interior designing instincts.
"Uh, thanks?" She responded as if she didn't know whether or not to be offended.
"I'm going to take a shower," she said while grabbing a shower caddy from off the dresser.
That's when it dawned on me. I shot my head up, eyes wide with terror.
"Wait!" I stopped her as she turned on her heel. "Please don't tell me that the four of us will be sharing only one bathroom?!"
She waved a hand in the air while laughing a bit. "Oh don't be silly!"
Whew. I wiped my hand across my forehead.
"My mom already has a bathroom in her room, so the three of us will be sharing the main one," she said before leaving out.
I was now beyond the point of furious! First I have to share this room, and now a bathroom?! Ugh!
My eyes eyes glanced over to the middle of the floor where all of my luggage still sat. Uzipping the Louis Vuitton monogrammed suitcase, I grabbed an arm full of my clothes and headed towards the closet door beside the dresser.
An unpleasant look soon washed over features as I swung the the door out.
Oh great, I guess she wants me to share this tiny closet too.
Half of it was cleared out on the right side, so I gently hung up some of my tops in order by color and designer. I was soon running out of space. How was I even going to make my skirts fit?!
So I did what any other person would do, and I took the majority of Natalie's badly stitched clothes out to make room. Ah, much better.
After about 30 minutes later of unpacking, Natalie came back dressed in... ducky pajamas? Wow. That explains a lot doesn't it?
She abruptly stopped in her tracks when she saw the mass of clothes laying on her bed. "Daisy, did you clean out the entire closet?" She then looked inside each drawer one by one. "And the drawers too?!"
"I did what had to be done," I said flatly, folding some of my delicate fabrics.
"I cleaned out half of everything for you! How much space do you need?"
"Well obviously enough to fit all of my clothes!" I said, stuffing some more of my cardigans into an already filled up drawer. "You know, you don't have to be so selfish," I rolled my eyes.
Her mouth then dropped open. "Oh, I'm being selfish?"
"Glad you finally noticed it," I winked.
She opened her mouth to say something, but then stopped. Hn, good call on her end.
"And plus, there's another closet in the hallway anyway," I said.
"No, Daisy, that's where we store the cleaning supplies."
"Well then your clothes will smell lemony fresh," I smiled.
She sighed and grabbed both arms full of thrown out clothes from her bed. "I guess I'll go see if my mom has space in her closet."
"Yeah, you go do that," I rolled my eyes as I placed my vast array of heels, sandals and sneakers on the shoe cart in the closet.
She later came back with two giant pink bins with lids on them.
"What are those for?" I asked.
"Your clothes."
"Oh girl, you must be joking!" I laughed. If she thought I was going to stuff my designers in those tacky bins, then she really was dumber than I thought!
"Not everything. Just your extra clothes that won't fit. Like your long sleeves and most of those jackets. It's the end of August. You won't need most of these until maybe November," she said.
I pondered on what she said. I looked down at my last two suitcases still filled with clothes. Sighing, I reluctantly agreed. "Fine, but you're helping me fold."
She smiled at my compromise before beginning to fold some of my jeans.
After an hour, we finally finished unpacking everything. We even managed to get some of her things back into her closet. Emphasis on only some, I still had a lot of clothes that I wasn't stuffing away.
"Okay, I will take these down to the basement," she said, wiping her forehead with the back of her hand.
"Ew no! You're not taking my most prized possessions into a cold, barren basement. Don't you have, like, a giant safe or something?"
"No, Daisy, we don't," she rolled her eyes. "And look, the basement is actually really nice and furnished. Your clothes will be fine."
Realizing that there wasn't much of an option left, I nodded an 'okay'. I watched as she struggled to drag the heavy bins away.
Maybe I should help her? Nah, she could use the work out anyway.
Grabbing the necessities, I headed for the shower. I walked into the cramped space and felt as if I had just entered a thriller film. How could anyone have such a horrifically green and yellow themed bathroom?!
I tightened my pink silk robe around my waist as I finally finished my nightly routine. The steam from the shower wafted out of the bathroom door as I then opened it. Sashaying back into the room, a yawned escaped my lips. I'd say about due time I've gotten my beauty sleep.
Not that I need help in the beauty department anyway.
I soon fell fast asleep just as my head hit the pillow. I'm definitely going to need a full night's rest for the catastrophe that I'm going to face tomorrow...
