𝟎𝟎: 𝐏𝐫𝐨𝐥𝐨𝐠𝐮𝐞
At 6:13, on October 8th, Vanessa Christina Gilmore was born.
Now, Lorelai loved Essie and Rory both. She refused to pick which girl she loved better because both of them made up a half of her heart.
She always thought that the brunette Rory was the moon and the blonde Vanessa as the sun. Of course, Essie smiled at people at the events that Richard and Emily threw while Rory seemed to study everyone because she didn't know who these people were.
So, while Lorelai dealt with Emily's criticisms and watched as Emily obviously loved and doted on Rory and Essie, in the way that made Lorelai's heart ache, Lorelai felt like she had no choice. She needed to get out of the house.
She knew that it would crush Richard and Emily both if she took with both Rory and Essie; so she made one of the hardest decisions in her life.
She left Essie behind for Richard and Emily to raise.
In the letter she had left behind, she told Emily and Richard to raise Essie to become the daughter that Lorelai had failed to be. Essie would make up for all of Lorelai's past mistakes. Essie would be the do-over daughter.
So, in the room at the Independence Inn that Mia had let her and Rory stay in while they fixed up the potting shed, Lorelai watched as Rory seemed to look for her Essie, because they were always together.
Lorelai actually did consider going back to get Essie, but she told herself that it was for the best for Richard and Emily.
Besides, Essie had probably already bonded with Richard and Emily and it seemed cruel to take Essie away from them, when they needed Essie to pick up the pieces of the life Lorelai shattered when she got pregnant with twins.
So, Lorelai stayed put in Stars Hollow and watched as Rory seemed to eventually forget that she even had a sister, which was one of the saddest things that Lorelai had seen. Sure, the brain may have forgotten, but Lorelai had seen how Rory seemed to always look towards the left, like she was expecting Essie to be there, because Essie was always on Rory's left.
She did tell Rory about her 'aunt' Vanessa, who was Rory's age.
One Christmas day, when Rory was around seven, she took Rory down to visit Essie, Emily, and Richard.
Rory had been chatty, wondering what she was supposed to talk to Essie about or what books that Essie liked to read.
So, when Emily allowed Rory and Lorelai inside the house, she was excited about seeing Rory.
"Essie!" called Emily up the stairs. "They're here!"
"Hi!" a blonde haired little girl said, appearing at the top of the stairs. She slid down the banister in a way that made Lorelai proud, even though Essie was wearing an emerald green velvet dress to go with Rory's red velvet dress.
Red and green – Christmas colors. Lorelai came up with the idea and told Emily, who surprisingly agreed with it.
Emily admonished, "Essie, what have I told you about sliding down the banister?"
"Sorry, Grandma," Essie replied.
Rory seemed confused, "Grandma? Isn't she your mother?"
Essie turned to Rory, confused, "She's my grandma." She looks at Lorelai, "You're my mom." And she looked at Rory, "And you're my twin sister."
"You're my aunt," Rory accused, because that was something she believed all her life.
Emily looked at Lorelai, clearly seeing how there was a problem.
And it was Lorelai's fault.
And it took a while for the situation to die down.
Emily had asked, "How could you lie to your own daughter about her sister?"
"I thought I told you to raise Essie as your own daughter?" Lorelai had replied.
"That would be rude," Emily said. "If we did that and she found out that we were her grandparents instead of her parents, and that Rory was actually her sister, and you were her mother, that would crush her. And make her doubt anything we told her."
And it was the first actual time that Rory was mad at Lorelai, because she was lied to most of her life. She had a twin sister. And Lorelai hid that from her.
And now Rory knew what was missing in her life, because she always felt like something (someone) was missing.
