Margot

"Hello, Daughter," The tall, light-skinned man in a blue Vanquish II suit says with a wide grin on his face, his emerald green eyes twinkling with delight. Those eyes always makes me wish I had same eyes as his rather than my mom's brown eyes.

Don't get me wrong. With her smooth as silk brown skin, pleasant to look at oval face, my mom could have been said to be one of the most beautiful women in the world. But there's just something about the way dad's eyes twinkles that makes me so jealous.

What?

Can't I be?

Meanwhile, I just stare at him, surprised. Why am I surprised?

Firstly, he's not the type to drop in unannounced.

Secondly, the last time we spoke, he had been on a business trip and had assured me I would be the first to know when he arrives.

Lastly, well, he just looks more handsome every time I see him, and younger, like as if he's forty-five rather than his fifty-eight.

"And what kind of daughter does nothing but gawk at her own father when he comes visiting?" Metisha says, resting her cheeks on her hands. I swear that girl's inability to keep her mouth shut will surely put her in trouble one day.

Turning towards her with a smile as fake as her lashes, I retort, "Metisha, why don't you just kiss my black ass?"

"And you, my darling, can have the honour of kissing my white ass," she fires back with her own fake smile.

"And can you idiots stop kissing each other's asses and show this man some respect before I make both of you kiss my fair ass?" Jules yells at us while my dad just looks on with amusement written all over his face.

"Are you guys always like this?" He asks.

"I am awfully sorry for their behaviour sir," Jules pleads, like a woman whose last born had been caught stealing a neighbour's cookie. "I try, I really try to teach them good manners but they never listen." She then signals to me with her eyes to apologise.

"Dad, I am sorry."

"I am sorry too, sir," Metisha says, even though she doesn't, in the slightest manner, look sorry.

I throw her a murderous glare before facing my dad with a smile. "Dad, why don't you let us go to a part of the house where I can offer you a drink and you can sit comfortably."

"Isn't that what you should have said earlier instead of keeping one of the most respected men in this country standing and stressed out?"

Anytime I wonder why I behave like such an idiot at times, I remember I'm friends with Metisha, the Queen of Idiocy.

Since she taught me how to be an idiot, wouldn't it be right to show her how much I've learnt?

"I swear, Tisha, I'll..."

Wondering why I stopped?

Daddy dearest tugs at my arm!

Oh, the things we do for love.

I postpone Metisha's death and leave the kitchen with my dad but that doesn't stop the blonde witch from yelling after us.

"Talk all you want! We will be in the kitchen, waiting for you to come share 'the business trip goodies!"

I tell you, when you want to choose your friends, choose wisely! Cause a friend like Metisha can send you to an early grave!

"So, how was the trip?" I ask my dad as we settle down in my sitting room.

"It was okay," he responds and takes a sip of his whisky. "Kevin handled the deal better than I had expected."

Kevin is my elder brother and CEO of Johns Industries, a company passed on to my father by my grandfather and then passed on to my elder brother, and which he would hopefully pass on to his kids.

Although, Dad claims Kevin is good, better even, in running the company than he is, he still insists on going on business trips with him some time. Maybe to kill boredom or stretch his legs. Ugh. What do I know? I honestly don't know which one I hate more between Mathematics and Business.

"He's back too?"

"No, he's not. He said something about needing to do some shopping in Italy," Dad says with a small frown on his face, "Lord knows that boy was supposed to come to this world as female. What kind of man decides to stay back in Italy for one week just to shop!"

Your son who has a secret girlfriend you don't know about yet in Italy, I don't say. Instead, I keep my innocent face intact. Let Kevin tell Dad his secret himself.

"You know how he likes material things." I shake my head. "Your son is so materialistic."

Father in heaven, forgive me, for I have committed the sin of falsehood.

Dad smiles at that.

Then, gently placing down his drink, he stands up and walks towards me. On getting to where I am seated, he says, "Get up."

Confused, I stand up. Then he surprises me by pulling me into his arms and muttering, "I missed you."

I smile into his chest. "I missed you too, Dad."

"Well, you showed no sign of it."

"I'm sorry, it's just that Metisha brings out the worst in me."

He chuckles lightly and gives me one last squeeze before letting go. He then holds me at arm's length and looks into my eye. "You know you are my angel, right?"

I ponder on the question. This is because each and every time Dad utters that statement, I don't like what he says next and something tells me this isn't about to be different, but I answer anyway, "Of course I do, Dad."

"Good. Now, tell me the truth." He hesitates a little before speaking again, "Did you have a fight with Maria?"

Told ya!

"Why would you say that?" I ask, feigning ignorance.

"I don't know. Maybe it's because you haven't mentioned her name in the twenty minutes that I've been here, which is unusual or," he continues as he sits back down, "maybe it's because you don't look okay even though you try to hide it."

This man, he knows me way too much. I consider lying to him but we are just too close for me to hurt him and myself like that. So I explain what happened to him.

He listens and when I'm done talking, stretches out his hand to hold mine.

"Margot, one thing I want you to know is that everything Maria said, she said out of love. Although, I agree there are some things she should have said differently. But never for once doubt Maria's love for you." He sighs deeply. "Have you seen the way she looks at you?"

I say nothing.

"It's the way I do, Margot, just the way I do." I couldn't keep it in anymore as tears begin to fall from my eyes while Dad comes to sit beside me and puts his arm around me, petting me.

After I cried to my fill, Dad and I discuss some other things before we go into the kitchen so he can bid the girls farewell.

After Dad left, I notice that Jules doesn't look as cheerful as earlier. Even Metisha looks unhappy.

"What happened? Did you end up fighting after I left?" I ask jovially.

Jules stands up and picks up her bag. "I have to go. Dad called."

When I still look confused, she adds, "The news of my breakup with Diego has reached him and my mom."

"Shoot!" I exclaim vehemently.

"The only person I would love to shoot is that son of a bitch called Diego," Metisha says, anger evident on her face.

I then remember I haven't been able to ask why she even broke up with him due to my dad's arrival earlier. As if she could read my mind, she says, "I explained everything to Metisha when she came to pick me up at the company earlier. She will tell you everything, won't you, Tisha?" Jules asks but Metisha seems to be lost in thought.
"Anyway, I really have to go now, you know how scary Dad can be when he's kept waiting."

That's right. Jules' dad is really scary. In fact, he's an authoritarian to the core.

"Do you want us to come along?" Metisha asks, coming out of her trance.

"That would only make things worse," Jules responds with a sad smile.

As she goes out of the kitchen, Metisha and I give each other a look that says, 'This can't be good'.
