VII

When I went down for breakfast everyone seemed rather cheery. Elizabeth looked much better, color had returned to her face and she no longer had deep purple bags under her eyes.

The mademoiselle and Alfread where quietly conversing over something in the newspaper and paid me no mind. I sat down at the table where a plate of porridge had been sat out for me. I stared at the mush, and decided that I wasn't hungry.

"William?" Elizabeth said trying to get my attention.

"Hmm?"

"Oh, William thank you so much for letting me stay in your room last night. I had the most wonderful night sleep."

"Oh, you're welcome my dear."

"Speaking of good news" Alfread cut in "the police believe they have found the culprit."

"Are you serious?" I asked turning to him eyes wide.

"Yes, here it is in the paper." he said as he handed it to me. I looked at the heading and sure enough in big bold letters read.

Gerard Arthurs arrested Saturday night and scheduled for hanging

"So that's it, everything is well again."

"Yes" Alfread agreed "I believe we can all sleep soundly now."

After hearing the good news my apatite returned. We were all in such a joyous mood we decided it would be best for us to go find a dress for Elizabeth.

I grabbed my hat and linked arms with Elizabeth, and we headed out. Alfread and the mademoiselle decided to stay behind, and wait for us to return.

We walked down the street, and a slight breeze swept through Elizabeth's locks. All of London seemed to have lifted spirits. The murder was caught, we could all relax.

We made our way into the tailor shop, which had a steady flow of costumers. Mannequins lined the walls, all dressed in their finery.

One mannequin in the far-right corner dressed in a white gown with puffed up sleeves, grabbed Elizabeth's attention.

She pulled my arm in that direction, giggling as she went. She circled the dress, inspecting it then after a moment grabbed it off the mannequin and held it up to her form.

"William what do you think, does it compliment me?"

I eyed the dress pretending not to approve. Elizabeth noticed and slowly lowered the gown.

"I think" I began "that you will look absolutely stunning."

She playfully wacked my chest, which I in turn laughed at.

"William don't do that!"

"I had to tease you."

"Ugh, what am I going to do with you?" She whined, the ghost of a smile on her face.

"You know you enjoy it."

"Perhaps, perhaps not, but you'll never get me to admit it." She chuckled.

We left the shop, the dress wrapped and carefully tucked under Elizabeth's arm and began our walk home.

We had almost made it to the house when Elizabeth stopped in her tracks. Surprised I turned to face her.

"What's wrong?" I asked.

"William, we have the dress, but we haven't a ring!"

I grinned and reached into my pocket and brought forth the ring I had purchased for her. She gasped when she saw it.

"William, it's beautiful!"

"I'm glad you like it."

"I love it."
