"Pizza Hut said it should've been here in twenty minutes, and it has been almost thirty!" Rhett exclaims as he begins to pace from one wall of his living room to the other. From the little time I've spent with him, I can tell he is a very impatient person. Probably more so than myself, which is funny.
"Dude. Chill. It will be here." I lean back further into the couch, tucking my feet underneath me as I bring the blanket further up. Rhett glances at me as he shakes his head but continues his pacing. It's getting annoying. "Can you stop. Just sit and wait. Plus, I want to finish watching this episode. I want to know if my theory is right that Violet is dead."
"Wait. You think Tate didn't save her?" He finally stops pacing as he asks. He furrows his eyebrows in thought.
"Yeah. I think he's a little liar. I've gotten good at picking them out." Before he can ask me what I mean, the doorbell rings, indicating that our pizza finally has arrived.
Hallelujah!
I watch as Rhett dashes to the front door, grabbing the thin box with a smile and giving the delivery person a smile as well as the money for it. He quickly shuts the door and places the pizza on the coffee table in front of me. I look at his expression, noting that it held a guilty quality.
"You didn't tip them...did you?" He shrugs at my statement before winking. "You bastard. That poor kid was probably banking on that tip to feed his family tonight." With this, his face falls, and he drops his piece of pizza back into the box with a frown.
I laugh at his reaction. God, he's so easy to tease. "Dude. Relax. You're good. The kid should've had the pizza here sooner. Don't sweat it." He eases a bit before grabbing the same slice and eating it savagely. Boys.
I grab the remote and a slice for myself and resume the episode of American Horror Story. I was happy he let me choose what to watch, and I've been dying to watch this show. Well, the first season at least. I saw the second season and fourth one with ... nevermind. It's not important.
After finishing my first piece, I glance back over at Rhett who is stuffing his face with his third slice. He wanted to sit on the recliner, but he seems like he's regretting it now. I let out a fake cough to get his attention. His head snaps to mine, and I pat the seat next to me. He quirks an eyebrow, somehow confused at my gesture.
"Oh my god sit here. You look lonely over there, and it's making me feel bad in a way."
I watch as he contemplates whether or not to listen to me, but eventually he obliges and scoots himself next to me.
Well, it was more like he tried to sit as far away from me as possible. I don't really care, it's not like I am one to cuddle and like to be near someone, but I am feeling a bit upset at the action. Instead of lingering on that stupid fact, I grab another slice, devouring it and fully engrossing myself with the show. We already made it to the fourth episode before I felt myself getting tired.
I need to get back home. I look over at Rhett who is basically asleep.
I start to get up, grabbing the remnant of the pizza box and trash and bring it to the kitchen. I recycle the pizza box and save the last couple of slices in a container for them to eat later. As I place the container in the fridge, I turn around and bump right into someone. Someone who is not Rhett.
"Oh my gosh. I'm so sorry. I just was putting the leftovers in the fridge." I begin to ramble since the man standing before me has such a superior and frightening aura around him. His eyes are narrowed into slits as he looks me up and down, making it apparent that he disapproves of me.
"Why are you in my house?" His voice booms over me, and that's when I notice the familiar chocolatey color of his eyes and the broader chin. He must be Rhett's father.
"I'm a friend of Rhett's, sir." I add a 'sir' after my explanation which seems to please him. Only like for a fraction of a second until his gaze turns cold. "We're study buddies." I lie since I knew that I might win him over. Which it seems to do the trick as he nods.
"Fine. That better be it. I don't need him hanging out with girls like you." With that he stalks away around the corner, and I release the breath I didn't know I was holding in. I let his comment slip from my mind because, honestly, it wasn't the first time I've heard it. People generally hate me and make assumptions before actually getting to know me.
Except Rhett.
Shaking from my thoughts, I make sure the kitchen is completely clean before walking into the living room. Rhett stirs slightly as I lay the blanket I was using before on him. His eyes flutter open as he pulls me down to him, obviously half asleep.
"Stay." The word itself makes me shudder.
I shake my head with a sad smile.
"I can't. Rue is waiting for me." With this, he pulls me closer. So close, that our noses are grazing each other. I feel his hot breath on my lips, making me lick mine unconsciously.
"Please. It's happening again. Please." I feel myself nodding before I fully register what he just said. I scooch next to him on the couch, letting him completely embrace me as if I were his favorite stuffed teddy bear. I felt all warm and snuggly...and it was gross yet nice. Weird combo, I know.
"Rhett, what's happening?" I ask, finally letting my mind wander to his strange statement before. The tone of his voice was so sad, it broke like he was going to cry.
"Us." His tone is much different from moments before as he relaxes. I let my hand stroke his longer blonde strands as he drifts back to sleep. It takes all my might to slip out from his hold.
On my walk back to my apartment, I let myself finally dwell on everything that happened tonight. My emotions flash from sadness, to anger, to bliss. Nobody but the moon sees this. That's all who can see this side of me.
The soft and lonely side of me. The side that is battered and beaten. The inside layer of myself.
The side that the man in the moon sees.
