Chapter 8
The group was currently seated in the dining room of the manor as two maids, named Rem and Ram, stood beside Roswaal. As Emilia and Subaru were sitting next to each other, Akira was sitting across from them as there was no one sitting beside him. As the white haired boy looked around, he saw someone sitting next to Subaru's left side playing with Puck.
"Her vectors......they definitely aren't those of a human being. If anything, it's kinda similar to Puck's."
The person Akira was looking at appeared as if she was a girl of at least eleven or twelve years in age. However, something seemed off about her, but Akira couldn't quite put his finger on it. Taking notice of Akira's gaze, the girl had a look of annoyance on her face as she stopped playing with Puck for a moment.
"Betty would appreciate it if you didn't stare too much, I suppose."
"Don't worry. You're so flashy just looking at you hurts my eyes, I suppose."
The girl was seen glaring at Akira as the white haired boy had a smug grin plastered on his face. Akira already knew he could be a bit disrespectful, but he wasn't going to let some brat in pink outdo him in that regard. However, their little squabble was put on hold as Roswaal suddenly spoke up.
"You truuuuuuly are a strange pair. You two come into the mansion of Margrave Mathers, in the Kingdom of Lugunica, and one of you doesn't know a thing while the other has at least a deeeeeeecent amount of knowledge."
"Is Lugunica in a bad state?"
Even though Subaru asked this, he needed to retrace his steps at least this much. From the previous loops, he learned that the king of Lugunica is absent. Apparently the king went into hiding and shortly afterwards, an epidemic struck throughout the castle. So the king and the children are the last of his line. Now a couple of old men are in charge and in the process of looking for a new king. After hearing Roswaal explain this again, Subaru heard Akira speaking up.
"Then Subaru and I made contact with Emilia and are connected to you since we helped keep her safe, I assume. Since you went out of your way to mention that the country is holding a selection for a new king previously, does that mean...."
"Sorry Akira, Subaru. I didn't mean to hide it. You see, my current title is a candidate to become the kingdom of Lugunica's forty-second ruler, with the backing of Margrave Mathers."
As Emilia said this, Akira had a surprised expression on his face as Subaru's expression didn't change since he heard this before. When Emilia held out the insignia, Akira noticed how it was glowing before she placed it on the table. The moment she did, the glow that Akira saw was gone as Emilia began to explain its significance.
"This is what qualifies a candidate to become King. It's a touchstone for determining if one is worthy of the throne."
"Wait. When Reinhard took a hold of Felt, it was when Felt was holding this insignia when she tried to give it back to Emilia. Did it just so happen to glow in Felt's possession and Reinhard noticed it? Wait a minute......."
".......what would've happened if Emilia didn't get it back, Roswaal?"
"Then there would be noooooo doubt! If it's believed one can't even protect an insignia, can't be entrusted to rule a nation, then thaaaaaat would be the end of it. You two are her saviors.....so, name your desire. You may have aaaaaany reward you request."
Akira was silent as Subaru already made up his mind. As the black haired boy stood up, he put both of his hands on the table as he asked Roswaal to hire him to work for the mansion. The entire room was silent upon hearing Subaru's request, meanwhile Akira looked at him like he was strange creature.
"........."
"Cut me some slack, Kira-Kira!!!"
"When the hell did you start calling me that? Anyways, Roswaal, I thought my staying here was a reward?"
"Weeeeeell, Lady Emilia made note of your situation and we agreed upon that. But.....your actions not only saved her life but aaaaaaalso her chance to remain a candidate for the throne."
Suspicious. This whole situation was suspicious. If that was the case, why didn't he give Subaru the same treatment and simply just let him stay. Why did he only extend that offer to Akira? As the boy let a sigh escape from his lips, he looked at the owner of the manor.
"You obviously have books that most would kill for, right? You are considered as one of best mages, after all. Just give me one book of my choosing from your collection."
"Hmmmmmmmm. Out of everything you could ask for, you just want one singular book?"
"Knowledge is power as they say. Even you should know that a single book can probably lead to great breakthroughs, right?"
As their eyes met each other's gaze, it was almost as if Roswaal and Akira were silently trying to make the other slip up. With a chuckle escaping from his lips, Roswaal decided to comply with both Subaru and Akira's requests. Soon the group began to walk away, as Akira was deep in thought on what book to get.
"I'm already aware of magic at least. It's divided into 6 elements. Fire, Water, Earth, Wind, Yin, and Yang. In order to use magic, some people use their own mana and pass it through their gate. In Emilia's case, she uses the mana in the atmosphere with aid of a spirit to process spells directly."
While Akira was saying this, he looked around and saw that he wasn't anywhere near his room. With a sigh escaping his lips, he knocked on the first door that entered his sight. He mentally thanked himself for knocking as he didn't feel like getting turned into a cliché as he heard the person on the other side speaking up.
"You may come in, suppose."
"Oh no."
As Akira slowly opened up the door, he saw two things that left him at a loss for words. The first being that he was currently now inside of a library. It was a huge two-story space with a spiral staircase in the centre of the room. The second floor consists of a large balcony which is filled to the brim with bookshelves. However, the second thing he saw was the main thing that left him speechless.
"You're so great, Bubby. Your fur is the best!"
".........................."
"Oh, hey there, Akira. I'm surprised you managed to find this place. Welcome to the Forbidden Library. Beatrice here actually watches over this space."
As Puck greeted Akira, Beatrice slowly turned her head as she saw Akira staring at her like she was a weird animal. Meanwhile, Akira noticed how she was staring at him as if she was a kid who just got caught by their parent.
"I'm just........gonna pick out the book I want."
"Yes, let us pretend that nothing happened, I suppose."
As the two nod their heads in agreement, Akira began to walk around the library as Beatrice continues to play with Puck. While Akira was walking around, he stumbled upon one book that looked as if it would fall off the shelf. Akira merely walked towards the shelf and the moment that the book fell off, Akira extended his right arm out as he caught the book in his right hand.
"Welp, guess i'll start with you. Time to see what we g-"
Akira couldn't believe what he saw. The moment he opened the book and skimmed through the pages, he noticed something off. Half of the book was written in another language, one that wasn't native to his own world or the one he learned here in Lugunica. As he kept reading through, he finally found some text that he was able to comprehend.
"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law? Telesma? Plus there's even text I can't even read. Just what did I stumble upon."
As Akira closed the book, he began to walk out of the Forbidden Library. When he reached the door, he held up the book as he looked at Beatrice. The girl merely nods her head as she figured that was the book that Akira chose as his reward from Roswaal. When the boy walked out, he began to wonder to himself just why a book like this was in that library if no body could read half of it.
"Well, a little mystery is enticing to some. Not only that, this text and this thing known as Telesma has piqued my interest."
~Nighttime~
"So, what do you think of our two guests, Ram?"
As the two of them were in his study, Roswaal and Ram were discussing about Subaru and Akira. Obviously they were suspicious of the two boys, so it was better to have them here where they could have a close eye on them. After thinking about Roswaal's question, Ram gave her answer.
"In terms of abilities, Barasu's completely incompetent, but he can be excessively quick-witted when it counts."
"I seeeeee. Now then, what about the one with white hair?"
"As for Suzushima Akira, I can't give you a clear answer. He spent most of his time today in the library and quickly went back to his room when he left from there. Though, it seems he doesn't completely trust anyone here aside from Emilia-sama and Barasu."
"I seeeeeeee. Akira is a smart one. He probably already knows of our suspicion. From what Emilia told me, he has displayed quiiiiiite the show of power without the use of magic. This is a delicate situation we must handle with the utmost care. Be sure to give the proper warnings so your sister doesn't act rashly."
As Ram nodded her head, she stood up as she exited the room. The moment the door shut, Roswaal began to remember something he read in a certain book. When he thought of his conversation with Akira earlier today, a smile began to forge upon his face with what he remembered was written in the book.
"The one who wields the power of God shall arrive at your door."
"I look fooooorward to our little game."
