Forgive Me I've Been Lonely

A/N: for emilie <3 welcome to the Romeo and Juliet au that nobody asked for with servant Kylo and Rey being adorable per usual (hella based off the song "Romeo" by The Ribbon Breaks)

He was a servant for the Dameron family, often an accomplice to the lady and lords only son: Poe Dameron.

He often rode with the prince on long horse rides and the two spoke minimal words to each other. The conversations mostly focused on Poe's current love interest and the long held feud the Dameron family has with the Kenobi Family.

Well of course Ben didn't know exactly why the feud existed but what he did know was that the Kenobi family was to be avoided at all costs.

Two weeks later Ben was sent out by Lady Dameron to go into town. The kitchen was low on certain ingredients and the Dameron was hosting a feast that very night so the kitchen was bustling and busy, with no time to go to the town.

So that's when Ben seemed to come in handy. For Poe was busy preparing with his family for the celebration that night.

He walked into town slowly, often stopping to admire the outside world. Ben was often restricted to the manor grounds and didn't usually go into the town. Going into town was more of a job for other servants, those who weren't obligated to stay at one persons side for every hour of the day.

Ben looked down at the small list in his hands and sighed. As a servant he didn't have a high rate of literacy and while he was taught how to read the basics, the list was still a bit troublesome.

Walking forward he spotted a young woman who seemed quite distracted by everything else in the world. Despite this Ben attempted to get attention.

"Excuse me?"

He spoke lowly for he was taught that as a servant, it was best to be seen and not heard.

She seemed unfazed and looked awestruck by the scenery of bustling people around her. Ben found it quite interesting that she was so fascinated by something so ordinary but then again he was also.

"Excuse me?"

He spoke a bit louder and almost reached forward to touch her shoulder in order to gain attention, but he already went past his limits when he repeated himself to someone who looked to be much higher than him in social class.

"Were you speaking to me?"

"Y-yes."

She turned around completely to face him.

"What is it?"

"Do you mind helping me with this, I can't exactly read everything on this list...and I need to get some things for the kitchen at my lords manor."

The woman smiled slightly before reaching forward to take the list in her hands. Ben could only watch as she read over the list, then another smile formed on her lips.

"I can help you get the items if you want."

He didn't say anything at first for it was confusing. Most of those higher up in society refused to be seen with someone like a servant unless they were serving them much less help them out.

"Really? Don't you think that'd be too much trouble for you? You could just read the list and I'll be on my way."

"No, it's fine. I would like to help. Now, follow me."

No longer protesting Ben simply followed her obediently before soon realizing he never got her name. But then again it wasn't his place to ask.

He came back to the Dameron estate some time later, his arms full of the necessities for the feast later that day. As Ben headed towards the kitchen his thoughts wandered back to the girl in the market, maybe she would be present at the feast tonight for the Dameron family invited many of the noble class and judging by her dress she looked to be one. He tried not to dwell too much on it for if she was even going to the feast he would only see her when he served out the soup course of the meal and looking to meet her eyes was already a bad idea and it'd distract him from his job.

So he pushed all thoughts of the girl from the market into the far back of his mind, desperate to forget about the incident. Ben couldn't, as he handed off the ingredients to the cooks and helped manage feast preparations, the way she smiled and the way she was so eager to help him lingered loud in his mind.

It would've been much better if they could've sent anyone else out to the town but him. Walking up from the kitchen to the main hall, Ben pushed his black locks away from his face and attempted to focus on the feast that would be taking place that night. In his mission to distract himself he met up with an all too eager Poe.

"Ben!" He gasped out, reaching forward to give Ben a clap on the shoulder. "I have an idea."

"For what?" Ben simply narrowed his eyes incredulously at Poe's all too sudden excitement.

"I was thinking that we should make the feast a masquerade."

"Why on such short notice? The feast is tonight!"

"I know..." Poe trailed off before handing him a small envelope. "My mother and father already approved the idea and many of the other messengers are already out and spreading the word. This envelope must've fallen somewhere, and I do not know when the messengers are returning. Can you drop this to Miss Rey Kenobi?" The last bit of the name came out in a harsh whisper and Ben could understand why, considering the raging feud between the families.

"Why would you invite her?"

"I met her at the Kenobi ball some time ago and I would be most pleased to see her again," he smiled eagerly and Ben had no choice but to take the envelope from his grip and head out through the manor door.

Soon his face met with the cool air of the outside and it quickly dawned on him that he had no idea who Rey Kenobi was.

It would be a lie to say that Ben Solo didn't attempt at finding the girl from the market earlier. He believed it to be a good idea in his head, but as he wandered aimlessly throughout town Ben realized how dumb his idea actually was and that running into the more than helpful girl in town was a rare one time occurrence, that he might as well get off his mind before it kills him.

Well before it kills him more than it already has.

So instead he resorted to asking around, as much as he doesn't like the idea of doing this, the loss of his pride seemed a lot better than losing his position as a servant at Dameron manor. As he asked most of the responses were either cold stares, disregard of his existance, or pure confusion.

"Excuse me? Do you --?"

His voice trails off as the woman he was asking for Rey's whereabouts turns around to face him. As soon as their eyes meet she smiles and all Ben could do is look down at his feet.

"It's you..."

He looks up from the ground and glances over at her in awe.

"I guess so," She gives him a wide smile and in response Ben's cheeks redden. The moment is temporary for he quickly regains his composure and reminds himself that he's not one to worry about seeking the affection of a noble.

"Well, miss, I need your help."

She winces slightly at the formality before answering him, "What is it this time?"

"Do you happen to know where Rey Kenobi is? I have an important message for her from my master."

Ben watches as her body goes rigid and her face pales.

"Y-yes..." she reaches forward to take the envelope from his hand, scanning it over she attempts a smile. "I know where she is, she's probably out and about or something, but I'll be sure to pass the message along."

"Thank you."

The young woman glances at him one more time before walking out of his line of sight. Ben was going to ask what her name was but it was already too late and then again if she'd wanted him to know what she goes by she would've told him.

‌•

That night the manor is busy and Ben can't help but feel sick to his stomach due to his buzzing nerves. He was never one to enjoy social gatherings and normally his master's didn't make him attend to any but tonight was an exception due to the overwhelming importance of the event.

Holding a platter in his arms, he cradled the several bowls of soup he was meant to serve to the far right of the banquet table. Walking into the dining hall Ben's anxiousness seemed to peak and he desperately longed for the feast to be done in over. As he was handing out the last bowl of soup he caught eyes with the person sitting directly across to wear he was currently standing. Their eyes widened slightly in what seemed to be recognition of him, but Ben was pretty sure he was just seeing things so in response he placed the last bowl of soup down before rushing out of the dining hall, his eyes cast down and his heartbeat fast.

‌•

Ben was quite fond of the garden. At this point the feast was close to an end and a dance was to take place soon after. It was determined that his presence was no longer needed so he had decided to wander into the courtyard gardens in an attempt to get his mind off his never ending nerves.

Raking his hand through his hair quickly he decided upon sitting on a bench near the far left of the courtyard garden. It was quite peaceful out due to everyone being inside the manor, Ben didn't really mind though, he quite liked the silence.

"We really need to stop meeting like this you know."

He looked up and spotted the stranger who was staring at him whilst he was serving in the dining hall earlier. Ben hadn't thought much of it at first but now he finally realized who the stranger was. Their voice sounded all too familiar.

"I didn't think you'd be here."

"And I should've thought you'd be here," was her response before she swiftly removed the intricate lace mask from her face, revealing her all too perfect features. "Considering you work for the Dameron family..."

Ben noticed as her words trailed off uneasily when it came to Dameron he didn't think much of it until he finally built up the courage to ask one burning question.

"I never caught your name."

He almost wanted to scream out in relief because the impending doom of asking her name was made him all too anxious. Ben didn't recall why but he was euphoric when she was the brave soul who wanted to actually know his name.

"I'm Ben, Ben Solo. And you?"

She bit her lip uncertainly and was reluctant to answer his question.

"Rey!"

A grinning Poe had run ecstatically towards the young woman who's name was apparently Rey. Ben simply watched as her eyes widened at the sudden use of her actual name.

"I've been looking for you, where have you been? The dance is about to start."

Rey didn't say anything, she simply followed Poe back inside. Before approaching the door she turned around and tried to catch Ben's eyes. But his eyes were already glued to the floor, insistent that their eyes would never meet.

‌•

It was then and there in which Ben realized how stupid he'd been, to not notice all the signs that led to her being the enemy! To her being a poisonous fruit that him nor Poe should touch. But it was already too late, the damage had been done.

He peered through a small window and simply watched as the dancing came to a slow conclusion, and how Poe seemed to grip a little too eagerly on Rey's waist. Ben wasn't an idiot, he could immediately tell Poe was smitten.

Good for them

He thought.

They deserve each other

‌•

He ran the name "Rey Kenobi" over and over again, trying to make it as obvious as possible that he shouldn't be doing what he's about to do and that she's the enemy. Despite the constant repeats of her name he still felt a strong push to get over the orchard wall. Ben attempted to stay as quiet as possible and convinced himself it would only a short visit.

Nothing special.

Finally making it over the wall he crept carefully behind a tree, spotting Rey in the moonlight. She wasn't alone though. Poe was there as well and he carried a love-struck expression of awe as the pair said their final goodbyes. As soon as Poe scrambled up the orchard wall Ben came into the light, the moon reflecting upon his face.

"So you're a Kenobi."

Rey didn't notice him at first, his words startling her up from her previous daze. Ben stepped closer and stood directly by the balcony front.

"Nice to know that I'm attracted to someone I'm supposed to hate."

That seemed to have gotten her attention and Ben immediately regretted his words. It was meant to be a thought or some sort of under the breath mumble but he must've voiced his thoughts out loud, loud enough for her to hear.

"Ben! What are you doing here?"

"I don't know, I just needed to see you again."

In response she flashed him her classic smile and he couldn't help but smile back.

"Is it true what you said earlier?"

Ben simply nodded as he came closer towards her, his feet climbing up the vines apparent on the balcony wall.

"That's all I needed to hear..." she whispered before kissing him gently. The moment didn't last long and slowly they both pulled away, resting their forwards against each others.

"Will I see you again?"Ben asked, his voice a low whisper.

In turn Rey nodded, a smitten smile on her lips. So then Ben kissed her this time and wasn't very intent on letting her go but neither was Rey.
