°chapter ten

"You better get that money." I hear a man whisper desperately through the phone as I hid in the shadows. "Or-"

"Or what?" I interrupt and step forward, the man turning around with a frown on his face.

"Who the fuck are you?" He asks as the phone is still held to his ear. I bring my left hand in front of me - I clutched a folder and waved it at him.

"If you want to find out Mr Percy, I would end the call." My voice sharpens at the next word. "Immediately." Sean turns around for a minute, lowering his voice further, but I could still make out what he said.

"I'll deal with this bitch and call you back." Jabbing his finger to end the call, Sean slips the phone into his pocket and shrugs. "Who do you think you are?"

I lick my lips and take a step forward. "I know that right now I am in a higher position of power than you." Aggressively, I rush to him and slap the folder against his chest. He grunts in response. "Does the name Matthew Giles ring a bell?" He opens the folder.

"I plead the fifth. I'm calling my lawyer." He reaches into his pocket, but I smack the phone out of his hand and he drops the papers to the floor, tightening his hands onto to my throat. My back hits against the wall and I shake my head.

"I wouldn't think about doing that. The police are already on the way." Sean grits his teeth and we both start breathing quickly. "I'll cancel that call and not tell them about all your embezzled money. If you drop this case and leave Giles alone."Releasing his grip, Sean backs away.

"You'll burn everything?" I nod.

"If you tell Tanner you wanna leave this alone and leave Matthew out of this."

"Fine." He snaps and reaches for his phone.

"Oh and Sean?" Looking back to me, Sean lifts an eyebrow. "If you decide to break our little promise, I'll make sure that everyone you know, even you, is thrown in jail."

As Sean walks away, I exhale deeply. A tear find its way sliding down my cheek and I smile a little- of course I was scared. But, at least he was out of the way.

Suddenly, my phone starts to vibrate. It was Harvey.

And he needed me. I rushed my way to court to find Harvey and Travis face to face with the judge.

I burst into the office and all eyes were on me.

"Excuse me! You must leave at once, or I'll have you thrown in jail." I barely have the breath to speak, so Harvey lifts his hand up and speak for me.

"Judge, she is part of this. This is Amelia Steele-"

"Harvey, we have no time for your games, now I have evidence that Giles is guilty-!"

"I think that you should drop this case." Harvey widens his eyes, frowning at me.

"W-w-" He stutters and I tilt my head, nodding.

"That's bullshit your honour. There is no way I'm dropping this case." All of a sudden, the phone rings. We look to the judge's desk and he answers the phone.

The room falls silent and Harvey pulls me to the corner.

"Where were you?" He whispers.

"Sorting this mess out. Trust me." Harvey nods and we make our way to the desk.

"Tanner. I have received news that your client has decided to drop the case. I am releasing Matthew Giles. Now, before I leave, is there any more time to be wasted?" Travis looks around the room flabbergasted.

I catch a glimpse of Harvey's lips curling into a smile.

"Better luck next time Travis." Harvey comments and I couldn't help but smile too. Travis makes his way to the door and growls;

"This isn't over."

Me and Harvey make our way out to the corridor and we face each other.

"How the hell did you pull that off?" I look down at my feet and bite my lip.

"I'm not telling." Harvey chuckles.

"You're going to leave me hanging?" I nod. This felt good. This winning feeling. It was a rare rush of adrenaline. "Well, you won. And I have to say, I wasn't expecting it." I part my lips.

"Of course you didn't. You saw a woman who couldn't handle herself. You have to admit though... I kicked ass." He laughs even louder and presses his hand onto my shoulder.

"You did well Miss Steele." I bow.

"Thank you Mr Specter." Harvey starts to walk beside me as we make our way out.

"How about that drink?" He suggests and a little warmth spread through my heart.

"As long as it isn't scotch." Chuckling, we step out of the building.

However, my warmth was brought to an end as a man stood waiting in front of me.

"Hello dear." He extends his arm out handing me a single piece of paper. "Happy birthday." I grab it and begin to read it, my arms dropping to my side.

"Oh god..." I whisper, my eyes filling with tears.

"Hey, what's wrong." Harvey spins me round and frowns. "Who was that?"

I swallow hard and had the strength to say, "It's my dead husband."
