°chapter seventeen
I look at laptop screen and sigh. The figures on my screen were a lot for me to take in. I didn't even want to touch this stupid case because it was one of Dylan's.
But, I certainly didn't want to cross a line with Louis Litt. From what I've been hearing, Louis is the beta in this firm. Someone who isn't as 'worthy' as Harvey and Jessica, but has some importance to the firm. And I thought that numbers were his thing.
I clicked the print button on my laptop and made my way to the file room, where several printers were hidden. I hadn't exactly been in this room before, but it is definitely something I should take a peek at soon. I imagine that there are many things to hide from other firms and the public. This was booty for other people.
As I walk in, I notice Donna at one of the printers.
"Hi!" She said, excitedly and stapled some papers. I smiled back at her.
"Hello." I notice her frown from the corner of my eyes and begin pressing some button on the printer. Oh no, had I drawn more attention to myself with the exhausted expression and tone in my voice?
"You don't seem right today..." Donna commented and I freeze for a second. She notices the sudden pause of my actions and steps next to the printer I'm using. "You want help with that?" Her voice was genuine, kind and, I liked it.
"Thank you." Stepping back, I fiddled with my fingers.
"So, why that face today? Harvey told me you totally threw the last case out of the park." I smile a little and face Donna, who is already gathering my papers in her hands.
"I... I've had an interesting week." She diverts her gaze to my forehead.
"And... that?"
"I... I..." I lick my lips.
"We're all like family here. You know you can talk to us." It hurt how much she cared too. But, I had to keep it to myself. As much as it pained me, I didn't want her heart to break too.
"Thank you. I appreciate it Donna." I grasp the papers from her hand. "I have to get this done Louis. See you later." She smiles slightly and I make my way back to my office, cradling the small stack of papers that listed back account details and withdrawals of cash.
Stepping into my room, I stop.
Harvey was sitting in my chair, looking at my computer screen.
"You're doing this for Louis?" He arches an eyebrow and turns the screen for me. I nod. "You should... focus on your defence. Beating Dylan. I think you should tell Louis that you're not helping him." I walk to the table and place the papers by my laptop and Harvey stands up.
"I know that D..." I struggle to say his name. "... that he doesn't deserve this. But, Louis does. He needs my help and I don't want to let him down Harvey." He sighs, running his fingers through his hair.
"Okay..."
"Harvey." I abruptly say. His eyebrows shoot up. "I'm sorry."
"For what?" He knows what. He's just to chivalrous to say it.
"For this morning. For... last night even. I was a wreck and, I didn't know who to turn to. I left because... I-" He dismisses my words with his hand.
"It's fine. You don't have to explain yourself. I'm glad I could help and I still am." I smile a little and there's a few moments of silence and he gazes at me and I gaze back.
"I should... get back to work. I can handle this Harvey." I sit in my chair and twirl the screen back to me. "See you later." He nods and before I can call him to confirm where we are meeting, he vanishes.
I turn my attention back to my screen, a post it note stuck to the edge. I lift it and it reads:
Per Se tonight at 6pm - Harvey
Biting my lip, I set the note aside and spread out the papers. This was my time to get myself back on track.
