°chapter four

My heels clicked against the oak floorboards and I glance at Harvey.

Around me reeked of a damp aroma- and Harvey knew it too. Although, by his facial expressions he instantly knew it was a whiff of a 'waste-of-a-trip.'

We, or shall I say Harvey, lightly knocked on flat 15 and we waited a little as we heard rummaging inside.

And then the door opened, the fade of our client revealed.

"Mr Matthew Giles?" The man nods, clearly distraught. "We're from Pearson Spectre Litt, Harvey Spectre and my colleague Amelia Steele."

I smile a little to help Mr Giles to feel more as ease.

Emotional matters clearly didn't agree with Harvey.

He was more of a straight-to-the-point man- with no emotional mess.

"P-please. Come on in." Harvey allows me to step in first

However, I don't think that Harvey was aware of the deeper meaning, but the let him found out the core details.

At least the easier ones that could be plucked off the surface. "It all started a few months ago. I-I mean, i've lived here for 16 months. And the conditions are horrible. I've tried to get someone in, but..." There was a pause.

One that had told me this case was something more then just a complaint. "... it hasn't happened."

"And the landlord?" Harvey asks.

"Nothing, I mean, I don't want it to be a big fuss. I kinda have no choice. I just want it to be better."

"You still realise that you're not paying rent?"

"O-of course.  But it should... I want some sort of compensation. Especially from a insurance company." Harvey turned to look at me, and gathered the files on the desk.

"We'll be in touch with you after we have a word with insurance companies." Standing up to button his suit jacket, Harvey shook hands with Matthew, walking out shortly after.

But I waited a little.

I had an excuse to keep myself behind. And what else if not a bathroom excuse.

"Sorry!" I whisper at Matthew with a little desperation. "Can I use your bathroom?"

I mean, why not?

"Sure." With a cigarette perched between his lips, he showed me the way.

I smiled to gain some of his trust and closed the door, turning the tap on.

It was time to freshen up. Most of us do it, not just to look sexy, but to actually look like I had used the bathroom.

I unzipped my bag and took out my red lipstick, redoing my lips. Next was my hair. I ruffled it a little to add some volume, then slid my hands down my waist and pulled my dress down a little.

A few minutes later, I peeked my head out of the door and stepped out.

"Sorry Matthew."

"That's quite alright." He pressed the butt of the cigarette into a dish. I sat down next to him and placed my hand onto his leg.

"Matthew... this isn't just a small complaint, is it?" For a moment, he stared at my hand. But he was now a little relaxed. "What has the landlord done to you?" He looks away. "I'm here to help." Smiling, I tuck a lock of hair behind my ear.

"He will r-really kill me if anyone else knew..." He lowered his voice. "He has dirt on me and-"

"- he thinks he can treat you like shit?" I comment, and Matthew nods. "Well..." I exhale and stand up. "... It's time we taught him a lesson. We are going to fight this." Reaching into my purse, I pull out a card and hand it to him. "Here's my number. Call me if there's a problem. I'll be in touch. Personally."

I pull the door open and smile a little, closing the door behind me.

There was so much more to do with this case and I knew it.

"Did you lose your way in there?" I look to my left as I exited the building.

"No..."

"Well, this was a waste. I think we should just-"

"It isn't Harvey." He frowns. "He needs help." Harvey scoffs and pulls open his car door.

"He's just like every other flat renter. Making a bullshit excuse and wants money." I rush to him and slam the car door. "What the-!"

"He's not okay! Listen, I know that you like winning. Are you going to turn your back on a case because it looks like it's bullshit? I don't think so! " I clentch my teeth. "Look... you need to trust me." Harvey tilts his head.

"Trust you? I barely know you!" Sighing, I knew I had to let him in.

"My husband died in a car crash the day that he went to complain about our new home." Harvey searched my eyes as my words trembled. "Now do you trust me?"

"I do." I make my way round to the other side, pulling open the door.

"Then get your ass in the car." I stepped inside and pulled the door closed, knowing that Harvey knew just a little about my personal life.

And boy, I didn't know what trouble it could cause.
