°chapter five

I lay in my bed, staring at my white ceiling.

My hands trembled and I wept a little as the sun rose, curled into a ball like a child.

Memories came flooding back of the woman I used to be.

The man I was with.

Who I lost.

But before I knew it, it was time for my clock to run again. It was time to work my ass off once more.

A new day, full of possibilities.

I got ready to seize the day and to know more about Matthew's case.

As I stepped out in the streets from my yellow cab, I was hit with the strong smell of coffee.

And that was only because Harvey decided to greet me with one.

"Amelia." Harvey greeted me as we walked into the building.

"Harvey. To what do I owe this meet and greet?" I notice a small smile on Harvey but I tried to avoid any eye contact after my spill of secrets yesterday.

"I brought coffee." Glancing at Harvey, I grab the cup from him.

"Thanks." We both got to the elevator, and we were silent. Personally, I didn't want to speak. The ball was ok Harvey's court.

"Look, Amelia, about yesterday-"

"-Harvey." I take a deep breath, taking a sip of my coffee. "Our relationship is strictly a business one. And I'm glad that I've opened your eyes. But, I'd like to have a quiet morning and do some research on this civil case." The elevator bell pings and the doors open.

"We'll meet later then. I'd like some updates on the case!"

I rush ahead of Harvey and make my way to my office. Tears nearly rolled their way down my cheeks, but I quickly gathered myself to push ahead with the day.

"Giles... Giles..." I whisper to myself as I pull out several files from my draw.

And yes, my desk was full of papers. Reams of it. I think I had used quite a few trees in the space of a few hours.

I underlined, highlighted, creased and  circled pieces of information on several pages. From time to time I diverted my eyes back to my laptop, and found out the name of the landlord.

Russell Banks. He was clean- owned a few places around town. There was nothing suspicious. But I made some calls, and one thing popped out at me.

The use of the single word. Unknown.

It was used way to often. Favours were called, and I received more documents. Although, I was drifting off, so I thought a trip to the printer would suffice in keeping me from closing my eyes.

I pressed buttons on the printer, and began printing more pages. I drifted a little, thinking about Harvey.

"Long morning?" I turn around.

A man, quite young, stood in front of me. He looked accomplished, and was definitely an associate.

"Yes... I'm sorry, you are?" I ask, folding my arms.

"I'm Mike-"

"-Ross?" He smirks.

"I guess you know me already. Harvey tell you?" Licking my lips, I nod faintly. "That's good to know I guess. Has he been an ass?"

"He's always an ass." Mike chuckles.

"Yes. He is." He walks towards me. "Are you Amelia Steele?"

"I guess we already know each other!" The printer beeps and I gather the pages.

"So, how's it been so far?"

"It's alright. Just working a civil case." Mike peers his head forward, looking interested.

"Need any help?" I frown.

"Did he put you up to this?" He tucks his hands into his pockets.

"He seems to really think a lot of you."

"Is that right?" Mike nods.

"Yeah. Look, just check in with him later. I mean he is my master! I better goddamn listen to him before he kills me." I pause.

Master. Master. Master!

"You're a genius Mike! I've got to go!" I charge out of the room and spill my papers out onto the desk.

I didn't care about the mess.

Someone must have been bossing around the boss. He must have had a master. A man with a larger grudge.

Flinging through some papers a small signature catches my eye. It was a squiggle, but I could make out the letters.

S. Percy

And this man, was threatening Matthew.

I had something. A clue to settle this case.
