[ 001 ] life on the ring.
— CHAPTER ONE,
life on the ring.
"I LOST PEOPLE." A woman scribbles in her book. "A lot of them. I could make a list of their names. But why would I when they're the first things I think of when I fall asleep and the first things I think of when I wake?"
The woman adjusts herself on the bed, brushing her hair out of her eyes.
"This is my new memory book. Lincoln and Luca always told me to remember things for what they are. And that's what I've been doing since I was locked in a bunker for three months." She continues to write. Tears gather in her eyes as she writes Lincoln's name, "so here we are. Once again, drawing memories, writing them. The good and the bad. There is another book, it holds more of my memories. Whenever this book is, the other is not far. To whoever finds this book in the future. . . my name is Ruby Carson and I survived. Enjoy my story."
Ruby Rowan Carson shuts the book. She leans over and sets the book on the metal bedside table. She shuts off the lamp.
"Are you seriously still awake?" Comes a muffled voice from under the covers.
Her speckled eyes dart over to the man's side of the bed. All she can see is a giant lump buried under the covers and a tiny bit of his curls.
"Yes, I am. I can't sleep," Ruby answers as she lays down, finally getting comfortable. She stares up at the ceiling.
The man who had been facing away from her shifts so that he can face her. She rolls over so that they are eye-to-eye. He reaches out and gently sweeps his thumb over her cheeks.
"You're beautiful, Sweetheart," he whispers.
"Oh, shut up, Bellamy." She rolls her eyes, a small laugh slipping past her lips. Bellamy smiles at the sound. As quickly as her happiness came, it fades. Bellamy watches as his girlfriend's eyes turn solemn. "It's been thirty-two days, an entire month."
"A month stuck in space." Bellamy shakes his head, "at least you're getting better."
"Thank God, I don't how much longer everyone can deal with my sudden panic attacks due to being trapped in an endless black void," Ruby huffs.
"You can't help your claustrophobia, Ruby. That's not something you can just tell to go away, Sweetheart," Bellamy's brows furrow.
"I know," she whispers. She shifts, resting her head on his bare chest. "Monty said the algae should be blooming in about three weeks."
"I know. I was there when he said it," Bellamy replies.
"Don't be a jerk," she hits his chest. "Ryland isn't healing properly either."
"Echo has been watching over his burns. They're healing but she says they may never heal all the way." Bellamy says, watching her closely as he does.
"He's going to have to use the damn wooden cane for the rest of his life." Ruby whispers, mostly to herself.
"At least now you can teach him to use it to his advantage in fights," Bellamy tells her.
"Yeah," she mumbles, "I guess, I can."
─────────
"If you don't stop, I'm going to kick you in the nuts so hard, they rupture." Ruby snaps harshly, glaring at her big brother over her shoulder.
"Empty threat." Murphy continues to annoy her by poking her back. "We don't have the medical supplies to deal with ruptured nuts."
"Then I'll give you a black eye." She shrugs. "Any suggestions, big brother?"
"Whatever you think, little sister," as soon as the words leave his mouth, Ruby spins around, launching her fist directly into Murphy's eye.
Murphy lets out a cry of pain as he stumbles backwards. He reaches up to cover his throbbing eye.
"Oh, no, not again!" Ryland groans from where he sits at the table. "Guys, they're fighting again!"
"Just let them fight it out. Maybe this time John will win and Ruby will have more bruises," Emori calls back.
"Not likely," Raven tells her.
As Murphy regains his composure, he launches himself at his sister. He swings his fist out at her. Ruby swiftly ducks under his arm. She stands back to her full height, grabbing his arm. She flips him over her back, sending him to the ground.
Murphy kicks his leg out, hitting Ruby directly in her stomach. She lets out a grunt as she falls back into the table. She catches herself before she can hit the ground.
Her big brother kicks himself up. As he does, his fist connects with her cheek. Ruby's head whips to the side at the force of the punch.
"Oh, shit," Monty mumbles from where the rest of them have gathered to watch the two siblings fight. "Money's on Ru."
"I got Murphy." Ryland responds. All eyes shoot to him. He shrugs, "just for the hell of it."
"Why the hell are you betting money?" Raven makes a face. "None of us have ever even seen real money."
As the others continue to bicker about money, Murphy grabs a fistful of Ruby's hair. She lets out a small scream. "That's cheating, you bastard!" She cries out.
"Nothing's cheating!" He shouts back.
That's when Ruby sinks her teeth into Murphy's arm. At the sudden pain that shoots through his arm, Murphy yells in pain. "Ruby, you bitch!"
He yanks his arm out of her mouth. As he does this, Ruby whirls around and sends another punch into Murphy's face, this time striking him in the jaw.
She maneuvers herself behind her brother while he recovers from the punch. Her sock covered foot connects with the back of his knee. As he hits the ground, Ruby lunges, wrapping her legs tightly around his neck.
Both siblings hit the ground.
"Tap, John!" She yells at him. As his face starts to redden he reaches up, tapping her thigh harshly. She releases her brother and pulls herself to her knees. She grins. "I told you, John. I always win."
"Yeah, yeah," he pulls himself up. As he looks to her, his brows furrowed. He points to her lip. "You got blood. I can't tell if it's mine or yours, I'm kinda dizzy."
Ruby reaches up, wiping the blood off of her lips. As she draws her hand back, she looks at the color. Red. Definitely not her blood.
"Yeah, it's yours." She confirms.
"You bit me so freaking hard you drew blood!" He exclaims wildly.
"That's what you get," she scoffs as she stands to her feet. She holds her hand out for him to take. He reluctantly takes her hand. She hauls him to his feet with no issue. He makes a face at her strength. Even after all these months, he's still getting used to the fact his baby sister has a near supernatural strength.
"It's only day eighty-two. They do this nearly every damn day." Bellamy scoffs as they all watch the siblings do what they call "The Murson Shake."
Their hands clap together, then the inside of their feet connect, followed by a double fist bump, and then they bump their hips together.
"It's actually every two days." Monty turns to face Bellamy, "they fight like this every two days."
"And we have to deal with it for five years." Bellamy sighs.
─────────
Ruby holds a metal rod in her hand as Ryland stands across from her with his cane.
"So bring it around like this," she instructs. Ryland watches as she brings the metal rod out in front of her. She then twists it behind her back.
Ryland follows suit.
"Then do this," she slowly swings the rod in front of her again.
Ryland continues to repeat her actions until they're both sweating, breathing heavily, and in desperate need of some water and showed.
The pair of best friends sit against one of the metal walls. The rod sits on the mat several feet away, Ryland's cane leans against the wall beside him.
It's been a hundred and four days since Praimfaya hit. A hundred a four days since Clarke Griffin died. A hundred and five days since Roan kom Azgeda, Luna kom Flokru, and Jasper Jordan died. Death Wave. Of the Ice Nation. Of the Boat People.
It's also been over a hundred and ten days since Ryland was burned so badly he nearly died. His wooden cane has become his most trusty companion. It is with him every second of every day. For the rest of his life, his cane will be there.
Some days, the reality of his situation hits harder. Some days, he cries to himself, wondering what would have happened if he never went after Ilian. He hates himself a lot of the time. He hates his disability.
But Ruby is always there to reassure him, to promise him that he is still Ryland Daniels. He's still the same kind man he's always been. His disability doesn't change his heart.
"How do you think Wonkru is doing?" Ruby asks suddenly, eyes locked on her feet. One People.
"Hopefully they're thriving." Ryland responds, "some days I wonder if us being up here is better than being down there with them."
"It is. . . more than likely," Ruby's says. Ryland looks over at her, surprised by her words. "Think about it, Ry. There's over a thousand Grounders down there and our people tend to mess up their relationship with them like once a week."
"That's true," Ryland says. "I hope Octavia is leading them okay."
"We better hope she is or it's gonna be hell when we go back home."
─────────
Ruby rolls off of Bellamy's body and onto the open spot on the bed. Both of them pant heavily, sweat covering their bare bodies.
"You never fail to amaze me," Bellamy says, still dazed from their activities.
Ruby can't help but smirk to herself at his words, "of course I never fail to amaze you. I'm great at what I do."
Bellamy chuckles, shaking his head at his girlfriend's ego, "damn right you are."
She rolls onto her side, bringing her hands under her head. "How're you feeling, Bell?"
"At the current moment, heavenly. . . euphoric. . . I worship you." He sighs.
"Oh, my God," Ruby laughs, swatting at his chest. "You're such a kiss up."
"Of course I am." He grins even wider as he reaches out and pulls her into his aisle, "I have been since we landed on Earth."
She sighs. A silence falls over them as they rest together. Ruby traces smalls shapes on his chest with her index finger.
"A hundred and ten days." Ruby mumbles suddenly.
"A hundred and ten days," Bellamy repeats. "Murphy walked away with less bruises the other day. You must be getting sloppy."
"He's getting better at fighting," Ruby rolls her eyes. "He caught me off guard after I got done training Ry. I was tired, he had the upper hand."
"He waited an hour to fight you," Bellamy informs her with a chuckle.
"Committed bastard," Ruby laughs, "it's a good thing I'm training him though. He needs it. Do you know how many times I've seen him get his ass handed to him? Too many, Bell."
"You're training a lot of things. Murphy and his Grounder combat, Ryland and his cane, me and my—"
"Woah!" Ruby cuts him off with a laugh, "slow you roll there, Lover Boy."
Bellamy can't help but smile as Ruby's eyes crease with laughter.
There's nothing in the world that makes him happier than his girlfriend's happiness.
─────────
Ruby sits in front the toilet, tears in her eyes. She grips her knees tightly as sweat rolls down the side of her face.
"Ru?" Comes the sleepy voice of Bellamy. "Sweetheart, you in there?"
Her response comes in the form of a gag and the sound of vomit hitting the water in the toilet.
The sound of the bathroom door opening fills her ears. Bellamy is by her side in less than a second. He grabs her hair, gently pulling it behind her. "Let it out, Sweetheart." He rubs her back soothingly.
They remain in this position until Ruby has no more algae or stomach acid to throw up. She falls back. Bellamy stands, grabbing a wash cloth from the cabinet. He wets it and returns to his girlfriend's side. He gently wipes away the sweat and vomit from her face.
"Are you okay?" He then asks her worriedly, his brows furrowed.
She looks at him her beautiful speckled eyes. A tear falls down her cheek as she blinks.
"Ru?" Bellamy grabs her face between his hands, suddenly realizing that something is seriously wrong. "What is it, Ruby?"
She swallow harshly.
And then. . .
"Bellamy, I think I'm pregnant."

here is the very first rewritten chapter of the sky brings death!!! y'all have absolutely no idea how excited and terrified i am to finish this trilogy.
i only have to rewrite the first eleven chapters of this book. i've already wrote and finished the rest of season five and am currently already working on season six so that once i'm finished rewriting the first eleven chapters more will be ready to go.
but wow!!! this first chapter will always be one of my favorites. it's so domestic and there's so many cute scenes in this chapter.
but let's talk about the major thing in this chapter. the ending. . . yes, the pregnancy trope. you may not like it but i am a complete sucker for the pregnancy trope when it falls under the right circumstances. and this is definitely a right circumstance.
y'all already know bellamy and ruby were going to have kid based off of the cast chapter and if you've already read this book but now y'all know that it's happening soon. like next chapter soon.
and, i mean, did y'all really expect me not to give them a child? they are the most deserving people ever. they're both going to be amazing parents who will do absolutely everything for their kid. i can't wait for y'all to read the rewritten version of the carson-blake parents.
but welcome back, guys!!! any predictions for that's to come in the rewritten chapters? or maybe something you guys would like to see? i'm open to any suggestions!!!
