You had finished breakfast, or at least what Tanjiro had brought you long ago, without a phone or clock it felt irritating to try and figure out a time of day, much less what day of the year it was. You laid back on the bed mat beneath you with an audible whump. You rubbed you fAce being a tad rough as for a moment your hands mimicked bear claws to dig into your face, you pulled them away with a frustrated sigh, letting your hands fall to your sides.
What now, was your life supposed to be some romantic tragedy of an isekai, it pissed you off. You wanted to scream, and yet of shame and pride, you withheld it. This was not your home, much less was this your body, that name, these memories. It made you wanna curl in on yourself, in your fit of misguided rage you found yourself sitting up again as the room was opened again.
A young girl with her hair tied back would walk in with a gentle smile, you almost failed to focus on who she was if it wasn't for the fact that her carrying her little brother. She smiled at you gently before speaking, "My father asked me to fetch you, he said it isn't healthy for someone so young to whole themselves up alone" she said with a small laugh.
As sweet as that invite was two things currently filled your mind, their father was still alive? Just how far back were you? Rokuta who was strapped to his sister's back didn't look that much smaller, then again the manga never mentioned an exact time of death, not to mention you knew he'd die. Your head was swimming as you tried to form a connection or at least process the best course of action.
Before you could narrow your thoughts, however, Nezuko came over grabbing your hand and pulling you up with a laugh, " Come one now! I know it's a bit confusing at the moment, but you'll feel much better if you get some fresh air and meet my family" she chirped dragging you to your feet and pulling you along to the other side of their home. Your eyes widened as you truly realized how small it was. The room you had been in must had been where they all slept, you felt guilty as they had set you in there to rest.
As you arrived, you noticed outside seemed so beautiful, other than the forest, you could see grassy patches and even spider lilies. The Taisho era secrets weren't wrong about their childhood, it made you wanna go out there. The world seemed pure and untainted from misery, and pollution. You felt your breath hitch in your throat as you were brought before their family.
Tanjuro was beside his wife, being gently cared for, he looked so frail like at any moment he would collapse and die. You swallowed thickly thinking of his death, Nezuko was speaking, but you heard not a word of what was being said.
You snapped out of it when the couple addressed you, "Akimitsu-san, please sit with us, are you feeling better?" it was Mr. Kamado who was addressing you. You nodded gently slipping your hand from Nezuko's and sitting. "How old are you dear?" his wife asked, "16" you responded receiving a nod.
"You're young little one to lose your family so soon" she murmured shaking her head. "My children are much younger than you, I believe Tanjiro is the only one closest to you in age" she explained while you nodded. This was so off-putting. They were just as kind as Tanjiro was in the series, now you could see where he got it from.
"Do you have any plans to return to your hometown?" Mrs.Kamado would ask giving you a sympathetic gaze. It hit you a bit heavily, panic settling in your stomach that they would hand you off to someone else.
You knew they were nice, but it was too bold of you to expect them to watch over you. "I don't know. I've never been without my mother, I don't know how to be on my own" you admitted honestly. "I don't know what to do from here, or where to go. I don't know any relatives, much less any that would take me in" you said with a croak in your voice.
"You can stay with us!" it was the youngest daughter of the Kamado who spoke, beside her Shigeru eagerly nodded. "Yeah! Can they Mama, Papa?!" the siblings eagerly asked. It surprised you to see how determined they were to have you stay, you were a stranger in their lives, surely their kindness couldn't extend this far.
You couldn't help but think of everyone Tanjiro met however, it did extend far if you thought about it from demons to the fact he kept the people he met close to him. You looked to the head of the Kamado household, that being their parents. You locked your eyes on them, waiting with held breath for a response. Please for the love of God and plot armor let them keep you here.
"Of course, if that's what you would be okay with Akimitsu-san you are more than welcome to our home until you see fit" Tanjuro would say with a warm smile, you let out a shaky breath almost embarrassed by how loud it was.
"I suppose that means you should introduce yourself to the children, and likewise" their mother spoke with a chuckle, Hanako happily jumping up and being first, "I'm Hanako! This is Shigeru! That's Rokuta with big sister Nezuko! Takeo and Tanjiro are outside cutting wood for coal, but you'll know my big brother Tanji cause he's the oldest and has a scar on his forehead, and!" she was cut off from her rambling by Shigeru who shoved a hand over her mouth.
"I wanted to say my name!" he whined before his sister licked his hand, he quickly pulled it away with a sour expression. "Mama! Hanako licked my hand!" he shouted as she quickly retorted "I did not, and anyway he interrupted me while I was speaking to Akimitsu-san!" she pouted.
Oh god, they were gonna be a handful. Then again even the anime world didn't have perfect children, everyone had their moments of brattiness. Mrs.Kamado sighed scolding them both for behaving in such a way before a guest while the pair quickly tried to defend their honor before their mother.
"It's lovely to meet all of you, and again thank you so much for taking me in. I owe you so much" you said as Tanjuro shook his head, "please do not feel indebted to us. As long as you are in need you are welcome here," he said.
"{y/n}, you can call me {Y/N}." You said feeling much more comfortable with the use of your name than that of the surname this body owned the claim to. "And thank you all so much, truly you're very kind. In my time with you I promise not to be a burden" you said with a sad smile. The promise of a roof over your head calmed one of your concerns, however, you still worried about the future and demons.
————————
————————
You were currently talking to Nezuko while holding Rokuta, you had offered to hold him while she got up to help her mother with a task. She had returned and you remained to hold him, her mother starting on dinner. Their father had returned to the room you had been in earlier, having a slight spell of fatigue and choosing to go rest until dinner.
Nezuko's little siblings had run outside to play, "you can come with me to the village tomorrow. Mama needs us to run an errand so Tanjiro and I will be paying a visit down there to fetch more food, and to sell some coal. You can see the town and the people!" she happily chirped. You smiled at Nezuko nodding at her, you were happy you could spend time and learn about her before the terrible future. You weren't even sure how you could begin to tell them, or even when.
"Is it okay for me to come along?" you asked worried you'd fall or even get lost. You were not good with directions whatsoever. Before Nezuko could reply you both looked outside at hearing excited squeal. "Tanjiro Nii-san is home! Takeo is too! They brought lots of wood!" Hanako's voice rang out as they would rush inside after the pair of boys.
Both looked to you, Takeo in curiosity, while Tanjiro looked relieved to see you were awake. Rokuta who was still in your arms groaned in displeasure at the loud shouting, he would curl up tightly against your chest, burying his face in your shoulder.
"I'm glad you're awake and looking better," Tanjiro said dipping his head to you, "Nezuko where's Dad?" he'd ask drifting into a conversation with her while you waved to Takeo watching him be overwhelmed by the younger duo of Hanako and Shigeru as they filled him in on your new residence.
You sighed taking the time to think while drowning out the noise in the background, there was so much to process, you swear the universe could at least be considerate enough to allow you to at least experience the five stages of grief, or at least just let you scream like a maniac for five minutes.
You shook it off instead of breathing in the scent of Mrs. Kamado's cooking, she had mentioned something about fish and grilled rice for dinner, you had to admit with the lack of laws in place technically you could try to help the Kamado's out as much as you could.
Heck, you could weave baskets, catch fish, and maybe even set traps for hunting. You considered the kids cringing a bit, yeah hole-based traps used for boars or large prey probably were a bit of a stretch if one of them fell. You considered what kind of herbs were available, thankfully salt and sugar weren't a luxury, they were pricey probably but likely not terrible.
You sighed, there was so much you would have to relearn. At least with Tanjiro and his family you'd have some time, considering your future you'd need to put in some work to remain healthy and fit unless you wanted to catch hands.
You thought about Akaza already cringing, that bastard would fuck you up so bad, you had to get a headstart on training. Forgive me Tanjiro was the only thing you thought, but you were not gonna have your ribs get fucked up by Inosuke. You couldn't help but wonder if you'd even remember any of this stuff, maybe you could get a journal?
Wait that would cost money, fuck. You'd have to find a way to earn your funds without asking for it from the Kamados. You had modern knowledge surely you could come up with something, maybe do some arts and crafts. Depending on what produce the kamados ate you could make a small garden for them to cut back costs too, maybe even you could provide a service.
There was so much time and so little at the same time, it all made you sigh as you refocused in time for Mrs.Kamado to begin serving dinner, everyone cleaning up and soon joining you, you were all in a circle of sorts, Rokuta still asleep in your lap before Mrs. Kamado took him from you to allow you to eat with them.
You thanked her for the food, taking your bowl, and settling in. No matter what happened you couldn't think of the past it would only stress you out, you had to move like a clock and keep going forward.
