Part One: The Choosing

"50 kids is all we need, sir," I said, pushing my glasses up on my nose. The glowing keyboard under my finger tips shone off of them and onto the tall man in front of me, wearing a dark gray suit. His hands were clasped together behind his back as he watched the names scroll up and down the projector screen. He was silent, not letting his gray blue eyes leave the names.
"What ages?" He asked. The room, once filled with the clicking and tapping of keyboards suddenly and abruptly stopped. He blinked and flashed his eyes down at me. They were hard and cold, menacing.
I turned slowly thought carefully. "A-ages 12 up to 27, sir," I stuttered.
The man nodded thoughtfully. "What percent are the genders?"
"They are equal, sir. 25 of them are girls, 25 are boys."
"Have you sent out the forms yet?" I shook my head slowly before pressing my glasses back up on my face, even though they were already up on the top of my nose.
"N-n-no, but I will be-"
"Marcus Holmes, a scientist at your level, which may I remind you, is very high, should not be afraid to answer to me in a firm and confident manner," the man said, slicing through me. I straightened up, looking him in the eyes. "And this is a very, very, very important research project. Do you understand the urgency of this experiment?"
I swallow hard and nod, silent in submission. The man took his hand from behind his back and ran it through his sleek, black hair. "I do," I said, trying to sound brave.
"Now," he sighed, regaining composure, "who are the first on the male and female lists. I'd like to personally talk with the parents of the first initiates." I turned to the projector.
"Callisto Holland and Lukas Bryant."
