Chapter 62
Johnny tried not to let his irritation show as his mom buzzed around him, the woman fussing with his hair. He understood that she was nervous to have the Casket's over, but he really thought she was overreacting. It wasn't like they hadn't met them before. His irritation lifted ever so slightly when Gavin finally came downstairs, his face dark with anger. It seems their mother had gotten to him first. His hair looked shiny and overly kempt, like a helmet.
"I look fucking ridiculous, mum." Gavin hissed, motioning to his head with pure disgust. Their mom quickly shook her head, smiling.
"You look wonderful, darling. And watch your mouth!"
"They're gonna make fun of me."
"That's not true! You look very handsome, I promise. Now why don't you two head upstairs and put on something nice?"
Johnny just nodded, heading up the stairs. Gavin followed close behind. As soon as they were out of earshot he turned to his twin, unable to contain his grin.
"You look great." he chuckled. His brother rolled his eyes hard. The two walked to the bathroom as they spoke, Gavin glaring at himself in the mirror.
"I look like shit. Is she trying to get Jimmy to cancel our date?"
"I doubt that. Besides, he likes you because of your perso-... well, maybe your loo-. Huh. I guess I don't know why he fancies you."
"Oh fuck off, git!" Gavin growled, giving him a firm yet playful shove. Johnny just laughed, backing out of his range of attack. He left Gavin to his sulking, heading to his room. He put on one of his usual button ups. He was well aware that their mother was mostly speaking to Gavin when she said to "put on something nice". Checking his phone, he couldn't help but smile when he saw that Gregory had texted him.
Are you ready for this?
Ready for what? Johnny messaged back. It only took a minute for his friend to respond.
How weird this is gonna be. Your mom knows almost nothing, remember?
The American had a point. The only thing his mom knew about was his lycanthropy. She knew nothing of Gavin's powers, the twins demon blood, not even of Gavin and Jimmy's growing relationship. This was going to be one tense visit.
It'll be fine. Are you three coming over soon?
Yeah, we're leaving in a few.
Johnny quickly finished getting dressed, returning to the bathroom just in time to see Gavin to finish wetting his hair in the sink. He couldn't help but scoff.
"Mums gonna be so upset."
"I don't care. I'm not letting her make a fool out of me."
"Since when have you cared about that?" Johnny asked. Gavin just scowled, pushing past him.
"Shut up."
Johnny followed him down the hallway and to his room, where his twin used a spare shirt to lightly dry his hair. It didn't take him long to notice his twins cheeks were flushed. He made the connection almost instantly.
"... this really is about Jimmy, isn't it?"
"No shit."
"Aw, that's really sweet."
"Shut up, freak!" Gavin hissed. Johnny grinned. His plan to keep the jokes coming was interrupted when they heard the doorbell ring from downstairs. It didn't take long for their mom to answer it.
"Why hello! How are you?" they heard her question. They heard Mrs. Casket next.
"Hello! We're very good."
"I'm glad to hear it. Please, come in! Boys! Get down here!" their mom called. The two glanced at each other, sharing a nervous breath before finally doing as they were told. Their mom seemed to notice Gavin's hair almost instantly, her eyes narrowing ever so slightly. Gavin didn't seem to care one bit. All Johnny could do was smile.
"Hey boys!" Mrs. Casket purred. They both waved. Johnny soon noticed that the Americans were slightly more put together than usual as well, especially Mrs. Casket herself. Gone were her dirty coveralls, a nice blouse and jean combo taking their place. Her hair was tied into a casual bun, which was in stark contrast to her usual messy braid. The twins didn't look like they had just rolled out of bed for once. Jimmy's glasses were actually clean. It was a pretty amazing sight. Gavin must've noticed too, because his eyes were just absolutely glued to Jimmy.
"Well dinner will be ready in a couple hours yet. Why don't you four go... go do whatever it is that you do, I suppose. Would you like some tea, Anne?"
"I would love some. Be good, boys." the woman purred, giving both Gregory and Jimmy quick smooches on the head. They both let out their own sounds of embarrassment. As soon as the women were out of their line of sight the four ran upstairs, assembling in Johnny's room. They knew dinner wasn't going to be easy. It would be like walking on eggshells. They needed a plan.
