Chapter 52

Gavin wasn't sure how he felt about this place. It was eerie, dark. It had a bad energy about it. But Jimmy seemed to love it nonetheless. He did his best to trust his friend. The teen had never led him astray before, at least not on purpose. He was feeling relatively comfortable up until the pile of evil in the old pool started moving. It seemed to understand every word they said and then some. Jimmy was weirdly infatuated with whatever it was. It worried him. Gavin soon pulled himself from his thoughts when he realized how silent they had both been.

"... it's getting pretty dark now." he mumbled. Jimmy nodded.

"Yeah. We should finish setting up camp for the night."

"That's a good idea. What all did you bring?"

"A portable charger, some snacks, and a little electric lantern. I have it from when we went camping a few years ago."

"Oh sick, that'll be nice."

"I thought so too."

The two went up to the bedroom, Jimmy letting go of his hand to get the light out. The American quickly walked to the other side of the room, putting it on the top of a dresser. Gavin couldn't help but stare at him. He thought he looked really pretty in the warm light. It made his eyes shine especially bright behind his thick dusty lenses, his skin practically glowing. His freckles were like stars. Jimmy eventually glanced at him and smirked, soon turning to face him.

"Caught you again, dork."

"I know, I'm sorry."

His friend scoffed and rolled his eyes, shaking his head.

"I already said it was ok."

"Are you sure? I guess I just feel kinda creepy."

Jimmy stared at him for a moment, clearly thinking hard about what he had just said. After a minute or so his friend stood in front of him, holding his hands just like he did earlier.

"I don't mind at all, Gav. I don't think you're being creepy. Like I said before, I find it flattering. I've never had anyone look at me the way you do."

Gavin's heart fluttered, instantly growing bashful.

"I-Is that a good thing?" he asked.

"I definitely vibe with it."

"Well that's good."

They sat in a comfortable silence for a while after this, just looking at each other. The room was tense, but not in a bad way. It was clear that they both had something on their minds. Gavin wasn't sure what to do. There was something he had been thinking about for a while now, something he wanted to say. He just really loved spending time with Jimmy. He loved the sound of his voice, the way his hands wiggled and shook when he got excited, even his signature earthy rose scent. Gavin sighed, knowing he couldn't deny it any longer. He had a crush on best friend. He had a crush on Jimmy Casket. He was about to spill it all when he noticed something out of the corner of his eye.

"Holy shit no way!" Gavin gasped. Jimmy jumped hard.

"What?! What's wrong?!"

"Look out into the hallway!"

Jimmy did as he was told, instantly looking horrified. Through some sort of unnatural power, the puddle of goo had followed them all the way from the pool area to their room. Gavin closed the door, unsure what else to do. Jimmy quickly stuffed a few old rags under it to seal the crack. They both stepped back.

"Oh god you were right! What do you think it wants?" Jimmy questioned.

"I have no clue. Man, I knew it was gonna mess with us!"

"I'm really sorry for doubting you."

"It's fi-"

They were interrupted when the whole wall began to rattle and shake violently. A creepy voice soon emanated from the other side door.

"Gregory? Why are you hiding?"

Gavin looked down at Jimmy. The teen looked just as concerned as he felt. His face was filled with fear and confusion.

"There's no Gregory here!" Jimmy yelled. Whatever it wasn't didn't seem convinced. It kept asking for Gregory in a childlike yet demanding voice. Before they knew it, the door started to bow inward. The two ran forward, pushing against the wood hard. Gavin noticed one of Jimmy's hands slide into his hoodie pocket, the hilt of what he assumed to be his knife making an appearance. It was almost like the monster sensed the threat, the pounding growing harder. Gavin took a deep breath, deciding that now was better than never.

"Oh god we're gonna die... man screw it, if we get out of here do you wanna go on a date with me?"

Jimmy looked totally dumbfounded.

"What? Now isn't exactly the best time, Romeo!"

"Just say yes or no!"

"You litt- yes! Now help me kill this thing!"

"How?"

"We have the gun Greg gave us, remember? He said something about it protecting us, maybe this is what he meant!"

Gavin nodded, making a dash for the toy. Jimmy strained to keep it closed on his own. He grabbed the gun, making sure it was fully loaded.

"Get out of the way!"

Jimmy did as he was told, the door immediately bursting open. The once small puddle had transformed into a giant bipedal monster. The room shook with each word. The lantern fell off of the dresser, plunging them into complete darkness. Gavin panicked and shot. The first one sounded like it didn't hit, but the second one earned him an anguished screech. He shot a few more times, the creature eventually retreating. Jimmy turned on his phone flashlight, pointing it at the doorway. Everything had seemingly gone back to normal, aside from the obvious damage that had been caused. The two stood stunned, not really sure of what they just saw.

"There's no way in hell that dumb toy made that thing go away."

"I know. I can't believe Gregory was right."

"I think we need to have a little chat with him."

"I agree."

They packed up all their stuff, exiting the mansion as fast as they could. It didn't take long to get to the edge of the field. They walked with determination into town, ignoring all who tried to get in their way. They had questions and Gregory had their answers.
