Chapter 35

Jimmy giggled as he approached the house, a shard of rusty metal gripped tightly in his hand. He could feel his body twitch and jitter with every step. The voices filled his mind with praise. They told him that the next step was to kill his family. Jimmy thought that it would be best to kill his mom first, as she was smarter and stronger. Not only that, but he knew her biggest weakness. He opened the front door, grinning when he saw his lovely family sitting at the kitchen table.

"Hi mama! Hi Gregory!" he purred. Gregory looked terrified.

"H-hey..."

Jimmy began to walk towards them, and was about enter the kitchen when something stopped him. He glanced down, frowning when he noticed a messy white line across the doorway. He tried a few more times to cross it, letting out a frustrated growl when he couldn't.

"What gives?! What is this crap?!"

"It's just table salt, honey." the adult whispered.

"... table salt?"

Jimmy stared at the substance for a while. He was thinking about a way to cross it when the woman suddenly stood. Before he could even react she grabbed him, disarmed him, and pinned him against the nearby wall. Even though he really struggled, his wrists were quickly bound with a piece of rope. Jimmy was forced onto the couch. His mom sat next to him, while Gregory just stood and watched.

"I'm really sorry dear, but this is for your own good. I know you can't control it."

"Can't control what? I know what I'm doing!"

"Your violent urges, the voices you hear. None of it is your fault."

Jimmy didn't like the sound of that, and he began to struggle again. He was able to pull one of his hands from his restraints, grabbing a nearby book. He was about to slam it into his mom's head when a weird feeling washed over him, causing him to freeze. All Jimmy could do was stare. For some reason, he just couldn't bring himself to bring the book down. The woman's warm gray eyes were filled with love, despite the fact that he was about to kill her. Gregory carefully pulled the book from his hand, holding it tight. The voices began to shout at him. They told him he was a coward, a failure. The feeling of insanity soon subsided, and all that he felt was guilt.

"... what's wrong with me, mama? Why do I want to hurt people?" Jimmy whimpered, holding his head. He felt like a monster. The adult just pulled him into a hug, rubbing his back.

"There's nothing wrong with you, baby. Now, you should go to your room and sleep. You seem tired."

Jimmy just nodded, slowly standing. He shuffled up the stairs and into his room, taking off his glasses before flopping onto the bed. He soon drifted into a troubled sleep.

Gregory sighed as he lowered himself onto the couch next to his mom, who had a far away look in her eyes. The woman clearly knew something. He had to get answers.

"Mama, what's wrong with him?" he asked. She let out a quiet huff.

"There's nothing wrong with him or you. It's just-... he has your father's genes, and it seems that you have mine."

"What? What does that mean?"

"... your dad was a demon, sweetheart."

Gregory was shocked. In the other timeline he had spent all his time trying to control and fight paranormal creatures, but now that he knew he was one, the world seemed different. Everything made perfect sense. Jimmy was a half demon. They both were.

"There's no way... how do you know?"

"Your dad told me a year after we started dating. We knew that if we were to start a family we would run the risk of having kids who were like him, at least partially."

"And you never told me until now? How could you keep that from me? From us?!"

"I wanted to wait until you two were mature, but I never thought that Jimmy would act up like this. I'm so sorry, Gregory." she mumbled.

Gregory began to think about everything he had ever done. Every weird twitch, every violent thought, it was all because he wasn't human.

"... so you said I have your genes and Jimmy has dad's? What did you mean by that?" he questioned.

"I meant that Jimmy seems to be more demon, while you seem to be more human. ... you don't hear or see things, do you?"

"Well, to be honest, I do occasionally. Not as much as Jimmy though, obviously. I just wish you would've told me sooner." Gregory muttered. His mom nodded.

"I'm really sorry... I have to go upstairs. There are a few things I need to do."

With that, she disappeared. Gregory sat for a moment before also standing, looking at one of the pictures that rested on the mantel. It was of his mom and dad when they were in college. He stared at the man in the photo. His intense dark eyes seemed to stare into his soul. Other than a stern face, his dad looked pretty normal. Gregory pulled out his phone. He had to tell Johnny.
