Chapter 25
She had been dead for days, maybe even weeks. No one would have ever found her if it wasn't for Gavin. People called him a hero, but Johnny could tell that he didn't like it. Gavin had never been one to enjoy being in the spot light, especially now. It was two days since his discovery, and he had barely spoke to anyone. Not even at school. The only time he really said anything was when he was talking to Jimmy, but even then it was just a whisper. Johnny just sighed, following his brother to the car. They waited for the younger twins to join them. He knew it would take a little longer than usual since Gregory basically had to escort Jimmy everywhere he went until his new glasses came. Johnny jumped when he heard someone yell. He had just felt kind of off all day.
"Hey guys!" Gregory called, waving. Johnny waved back.
"Hello! So... how was is being with your brother all day long?" he asked, turning towards Jimmy. The teen just shrugged.
"It was just like being in elementary school again. They would always have us together back then."
"Oh? And is that a good thing?"
"... yes."
Johnny just smiled, and the four got in the truck. The ride home was pretty typical, if not a bit quiet. They soon dropped them off, returning to their own home. Inside the house, Johnny tried to talk to Gavin.
"So... how was your day?"
His twin just gave him a thumbs up.
"Well that's good... would you like some tea?" Johnny asked. Gavin nodded, plopping down onto the couch. He walked into the kitchen. He reached up, and was about to grab a cup when pain suddenly shot up his spine. The cup his was holding fell, smashing on the ground below. The pain spread to the rest of his body. Johnny hunched over, letting out a grunt. This just didn't make any sense. Gavin soon ran in.
"Are you ok?! What happened?!"
"I don't know! Everything just hurts so bad..."
Gavin quickly wrapped his arm around him, helping him to a chair. Johnny looked down at his hands, gasping. His nails had changed into sharp claws. He began to panic, and he heard Gavin gasp too.
"What the-... are you turning?! During the day?!" Gavin squeaked. Johnny nodded.
"I-I think I am!"
Gavin looked horrified, and rightfully so. Johnny knew that the last time he turned he nearly killed his brother, much to his dismay. His transformation began to advance, and the pain took over once more. He let out a sob, resting his head on the table before him. He hated letting Gavin see him like this. It just hurt so bad.
"What do I do, Johnny? How can I help you?"
"T-there's something in my desk. A bottle. In it is a purple flower. It'll slow down my transformation... hurry!" Johnny grunted. He heard Gavin run off. Now that he was alone, the pain took over his senses. Tears streamed down his cheeks, and his body began to go through a series of uncontrollable tremors and spasms. He knew that he must've looked worse than he thought, because when Gavin turned the corner he looked like he wanted to scream. He seemed to quickly get over it, however, and pulled a small sprig out of the bottle. He handed it to him
"I think this is it. Do your thing."
Johnny quickly self medicated, and after a few minutes, the pain began to melt away. He still felt pretty awful, but at least he wasn't turning anymore. It was crazy what one little plant could do.
"... are you ok now?" Gavin questioned.
"I-I don't know."
The twin just nodded. They sat in silence for a while until Johnny felt better. He took a sip of his water, sitting back. He looked at his hands. His nails had gone back to normal. Johnny let out a sigh of relief.
"So, Johnny, just what the hell was that? Why did you start to turn during the day?"
"I have no clue, just-... don't tell mother. Please! She would never let me leave the house!" he exclaimed. Gavin chuckled.
"Yeah, yeah. I won't. Maybe you should make one of your drugs to keep this from happening again?"
Johnny gasped, his eyes widening.
"How did you know about that?!"
"I saw the stuff on your desk, man! If you want to hide something, don't just leave it lying about! ... don't worry though, I won't tell mum about that either."
"Thank goodness... I knew you weren't a total snitch." Johnny chuckled. Gavin rolled his eyes, letting out a quiet huff. He was about to say something else when his phone began to ring. It was Gregory.
"Hey Johnny! Jimmy forgot his phone in the back of your truck. Could you drive it over pleaseee?"
"Umm... sure thing. I'll be there in a few minutes."
Johnny hung up the phone, and Gavin gave him a disapproving look. He shakily stood, making his way to the front door. He had a phone to deliver.
