Chapter 2
"How about I make breakfast today, hmm? Pancakes maybe?" their mom questioned, giving them both a little grin. Gregory nodded excitedly, wiping the tears away as he looked over at Jimmy. Ever since he woke up he had been trying has hard as he could to act normal, but he could tell that Jimmy knew something was up. He must've known that it was more than just a "bad dream". Probably because they had run into paranormal creatures before.
"Sounds good! What do you think, Greg?" Jimmy asked, snapping him out of his trance.
"Y-yeah! Sounds great!" Gregory exclaimed. Their mom nodded, patting the top of their heads before walking away.
"We should probably get dressed." Jimmy mumbled, seemingly to himself. Gregory let out a little sigh, nodding as he slid out of bed. He walked over to their closet, pulling out his favorite black shirt. It had a cool little rocket on it and everything! That's when he noticed that Jimmy was now standing next to him, just kind of staring. Gregory turned to him, smiling.
"Go ahead and get your clothes on! We can't keep mom for waiting too long!" Gregory told him. Jimmy nodded quickly. He turned his back to his brother as he began to change. After a minute or two they finished. They quickly ran downstairs. He slowly followed his brother into the kitchen. He turned the corner, jumping when he heard Jimmy let out a cry of horror. He was trying to talk, but all that was coming out was noises. Gregory grabbed his brother's shaking shoulders, causing the him to let out a bloodcurdling scream.
"J-Jimmy?! What's wrong?!" Gregory cried, already having a general idea of what was wrong.
"Right there! LOOK!!" Jimmy screeched, pointing. Gregory turned to look. There was literally nothing there.
"I... I don't see anything." Gregory whispered. The two glanced at each other. Jimmy's eyes were wide with fear, and had maybe just a hint of insanity mixed in.
"B-but. The blood... is gone??" Jimmy mumbled, continuing to stare at the clean white tiles in front of them. Gregory frowned. He figured that maybe Jimmy could remember the other timeline, just in small in increments... and what he could remember must've been pretty gory, based on his reaction. Poor kid. Even in this timeline he's tormented by the not-yet-existent blood on his hands. Gregory sighed, pulling his twin into a gentle hug. He would need to find a way to make these "episodes" far less extreme in the near future. Maybe he could even find a way to prevent them completely, if he tried hard enough.
"It'll be ok! I-... I'll protect you from all the scary stuff, alright? Just like you promised you would do for me earlier! As long as we look out for each other, everything will be fine!" Gregory told him, being sure to sound extra confident. This seemed to snap Jimmy out of his terror induced trance completely.
"Aww! You're so sweet, Gregory!" Jimmy squeaked, his smile returning. He still seemed a bit shaken up, but he calmed down pretty quick when he saw their mom walk round the corner.
"What were those screams I heard??" she asked, looking back and forth between them.
"We thought we saw something spooky... but it was nothing. That's all!" Jimmy told her. She frowned.
"Alright... but you'd better not be lying to me, James." their mom sighed. Gregory let out a gasp, and Jimmy froze up. They knew it was serious when the real name came out.
"H-he's not lying, momma! I promise!" Gregory squeaked.
"Alright. ... why don't you two come eat? Maybe you can tell me what you two saw that scared you so bad." she mumbled, taking a glance around the room before sitting in one of the nearby chairs. She took a sip of her coffee. The twins eyes widened.
"... what did you see?" Gregory whispered, turning to his brother. Jimmy's face turned pale.
"Some seriously scary stuff..."
"Like what?"
"I... I can't tell you. You'll think I'm all weird in the head if I do!" Jimmy whined. Gregory quickly shook his head.
"I would never think that! Please just tell me." he begged. The younger twin let out a sigh before nodding slowly.
"Ok. I-I walk around the corner and saw momma. But... she was dead, covered in stab marks! A-and... I was the one holding the knife." Jimmy told him, looking away. He seemed almost embarrassed to be telling him. Gregory's eyes widened. What he thought earlier was right! Jimmy could remember little bits of the other timeline. He almost instantly felt awful, knowing that he was mostly to blame. Even after going back in time, his brother was haunted by what he had done... or rather, what he had yet to do.
