(REVISED) Chapter 2- Last Time
A/N
I changed up the previous chapter a bit. They are not twins in this edited version! Yuki is the older sibling by 6 years. It's quite a lot but pertinent to the story!
Yuki is also already a ghoul investigator and has been on leave temporarily due to a recovery from a broken ankle and smaller injuries.
I've been doing a TON of research about positions, character, wards, cause-n-effects, and a lot about the timeline to hopefully make up my absence and cr**py writing from my middle school days lol! XD TOT
Third person POV
Kaneki happily walked up the stairs to his apartment. With steps and a sheepish smile that he couldn't conceal, he entered his apartment with a loud greeting.
"Ken! Hello!" Yuki peeped her head from around the corner with curious eyes. "You seem extra chirpy."
"I-I guess..." Kaneki scratched his cheek with a small chuckle. "I-I have a d-date with Rize-san."
"EEH?!" Yuki's jaw dropped and her eyes popped out of their sockets. "Seriously?!" Yuki walked out from the corner and vigorously shook him by the shoulders.
"S-seriously!"
"How did you get the balls to ask her?!" Yuki gasped and covered her mouth.
"Yuki!" Kaneki exclaimed with a red face.
"So, so! How did it happen?" Yuki excitedly clapped her hands and hurriedly pushed Kaneki towards the table and down onto a chair. "When is the date?"
"She approached me and started talking because we had the same book..." Kaneki bashfully explained. "We will go on a date next week- October first. "
"I guess it's a book lover thing." Yuki laughed and sat down across from Kaneki. "I never asked, but when did you first meet her?"
"Hmm, I think early May."
"Hah~, you have hesitated for so long?" Yuki sniffled and wiped away a fake tear. "Anyways, what do you plan for your date then~?"
"We are going to go to the bookstore!" Kaneki happily exclaimed.
"Hah..." Yuki's eyes dropped in a teasing and disappointed manner.
"Th-that's not all! We will be having dinner since the bookstore is in the same building!" Kaneki defended.
"Yeah, yeah~." Yuki laughed and flicked Kaneki's forehead.
"Ow..." Kaneki flinched and rubbed the sore spot. "That hurts, Yuki-chan... You're a lot stronger."
"It would be strange if I wasn't strong." Yuki rolled her eyes and smirked. "Your sister has to be strong to protect you~! So have fun and hurry and get a girlfriend!" Yuki hopped off the seat and walked to the kitchen counter.
"A-a girlfriend..." Kaneki sweatdropped with a short chuckle.
"Yeah, a girlfriend." Yuki nodded her head with a deadpan expression. "You hardly spend time outside unless Hide or I drag you out to someplace. Aside from when you go to school of course." Yuki chuckled.
"That's not entirely true..." Kaneki sighed.
"Then it's not entirely wrong." Yuki rebutted and poured out a cup of tea for him.
"Will you really be working soon?"
"Mm. It's now about a few days of freedom before I get stormed in paperwork and missions." Yuki sighed and sat back down as she rested her chin onto the table.
"... Please be safe." Kaneki worriedly looked over to his sister and knitted his brows.
"Yes, yes. I will be safe. Don't worry about me and worry about yourself. Be careful on that date of yours. I won't be able to chaperone~!" Yuki chuckled loudly to tease the red and embarrassed face of Kaneki's.
"Nothing will happen, Yuki-chan... I think I am old enough to take care of myself." Kaneki laughed it off and took a sip of the warm tea.
"I guess you really have grown up..." Yuki's lips shaped into a reminiscent and melancholy smile. "Geez. I got back from the 1st ward a year ago and have been buried in paperwork since then. To think we didn't see each other often during that time."
"Yeah... It has been a while since you have stayed over at the apartment." Kaneki stared into the teacup with a small smile of reminiscent.
"Well, I'll be here in this apartment of yours till my place has its boxes sent over next week. Though it may not be permanent move into this ward, won't you help your big sister and do the work for me, or I mean help me?" Yuki childishly laughed and cheekily grinned.
"Yes, yes, I will help you." Kaneki laughed into the cup as he took a sip.
"You better not back out on me, haha. I have a spare key to your place thanks to you so that I can storm in here if you forget." Yuki pointed her finger at Kaneki and shook it off. "Though I doubt I would have to do that since you're a good child."
"I feel like you would do that without any reason regardless whenever you have the free time to do so."
"Ahh, you read my mind!" Yuki snapped her fingers and laughed out loud. "I should retire to my room first. Good night, Ken!" Yuki hopped off her seat and quickly hugged her brother good night before leaving him.
"Hah... I guess I should work harder to make up the loss of time!" Yuki grinned determinedly and pulled out her laptop and multiple binders and books.
-----
"What...?" Yuki's eyes widened in a shocked state. "He died?"
"My condolences. Senior investigator Daiki Fuse has passed away when he was assigned to an investigation in the 6th ward." Shinohara sighed and sadly frowned.
"... I understand. How did he die?" Yuki furrowed her brows and firmly pressed her lips. She brought her hand over forehand and fanned it across her eyes.
"He was killed during an investigation. He was found dead with brutal wounds that immobilized him and died a brutal way."
"Sigh... I see." Yuki slid her hand down her face and tilted her head upwards. After a few seconds, she removed her hand and made proper eye contact with the senior investigator. "Could you tell me which ghoul killed him?"
"Due to the way we found him, his injuries showed signs of Jason's doing. I will have someone send in a report to you today."
"Thank you... That would be appreciated to have it as soon as possible." Yuki bowed her head and stood back straight.
"For now you will not be assigned to any fieldwork just yet due to this unfortunate event. You are still fresh out of recovery too."
"I understand..." Yuki nodded her head.
"Daiki was a great man. I'm sure that he is happy with a great student like you." Shinohara warmly smiled. "If you ever need help or someone to talk to, you can always find me, Yuki."
"Yeah... Thank you." Yuki softly smiled back in gratitude and nodded her head.
The two shared a quick and formal yet warm conversation in condolence of a comrade and parted ways very shortly. Yuki made her way to the office where she and her senior, Daiki Fuse, spent their work and time.
With a deep sigh, Yuki couldn't feign her remorseful expression in the dim room. Without turning on the lights, she shut the door behind her and sat down at her desk. She blankly stared at the ceiling for a couple of minutes before shutting her eyes.
"If only I wasn't caught off guard our last mission and got myself injured..." Yuki gritted her teeth, and her hand grazed over the side of her stomach.
The reason why Yuki felt great remorse and guilt is that she wasn't able to accompany her senior to the investigation in the 6th ward due to her recovery. If only during her previous mission she didn't break her weapon in combat and resorted to close combat.
Her leg was caught during the close combat with a deranged ghoul, which was broken due to the ghoul's strength on the spot, but thankfully her bones were not crushed into pieces. With the handicap of her broken ankle, she couldn't dodge all of the attacks, and the side of her stomach received a deeper slash and minor cuts around her legs and left forearm.
Yuki couldn't worry both Hide and Kaneki, so they only knew her ankle was broken as it can obviously be seen.
Still, because of her one mistake, she could have died that day if she didn't persevere with a broken weapon. And because of that mistake that she escaped out of alive, her senior died.
Even if Jason is a high-ranking ghoul and the chances of defeating him would be difficult and slim, perhaps she wouldn't be swimming in the guilt of letting her senior leave to hell. Perhaps she could have made a small difference. Or perhaps she would have died and left Kaneki and Hide with sorrow and remorse without being able to do more for them and especially for her brother.
Yuki wiped away her tears for more to come and sniffled her nose. She brought her knees to her chest and her heels fell off with the push of the edge of the chair. She silently cried in the dark room for a few minutes, not wanting her coworkers to hear her sobs through the door.
With a sharp inhale, Yuki shook her head and stood up for the lights. She flipped the switch and slowly inhaled and exhaled. She wiped away at her tears and grabbed a tissue for her nose.
"Let's do our best, Yuki! We can't let our mentor's teaching and effort go in vain!" Yuki's grin quivered, and her fist was tightly clenched. She walked over to the pile of papers of investigation and tied her hair up. She immediately began analyzing and filling out necessary forms.
-----
*Knock knock*
"Ah, come in." Yuki placed a stack of papers into a folder and looked through the rest of the piles as the investigator entered the room.
"I see you have been working diligently." Shinohara entered the room with a folder in his hand.
"I have to make up lost time." Yuki placed down the folder and looked up. "I thought you were going to send someone else in? Are there any new news?"
"Yes. This folder has reports of his death and his investigation. You will be added to his investigation of suspect 696 and suspect 723." Shinohara handed over the folder to Yuki, who immediately opened it to review its contents.
"Added?" Yuki raised a brow.
"Another pair has crossed paths with your case. A senior investigator and rank 1 investigator."
"I see... But why would Jason be in the 6th ward? His terrain is in the 13th ward. Is he associated with suspect 696 and 723." Yuki frowned and tapped the desk with her fingers as she read through the reports.
"Chances are very likely considering that Jason is in the 6th ward. Right now the pair is in the 20th ward, hence how they connected information to your case."
"Who is this pair?" Yuki looked up and tilted her head.
"You'll know soon enough. They have also been assigned to the Binge Eater case and the Jason case, so I'm sure you'll get some information from them. The pair will meet you in the 6th ward in the late afternoon."
'Jason...' Yuki's mouth twitched towards a grimacing frown but resurfaced a poised expression.
"I understand. I suppose I will meet them at the 6th ward branch building then!" Yuki looked up with an expectant look, which he nodded his head in confirmation to.
"I came to relay the order that you will head to the 6th ward tomorrow at sunrise. Your quinque has been repaired during your recovery too."
"And here I thought you just said that I would just be doing paperwork." Yuki smirked and lightly chuckled. "I understand. I will go pick up my quinque right now and review the report on the way."
-----
"Good evening Kouitsu-san!" Yuki grinned to the side and shook hands with the research head whose bowl cut hair covered his eyes.
"Hello, Kaneki-san. I received word that you will be off for an investigation right away tomorrow despite coming back from recovery."
"Yeah, haha." Yuki scratched the back of her head. "Guess they can't keep me out of the ballpark for too long."
"Certainly." The researcher chuckled and waved his hand towards a coworker, who soon came back with a case.
"Go ahead and open it." The research's excited tone encouraged Yuki to step up to the large table and open the case.
"Holy sh**..." Yuki gaped and stared at the weapon for a few seconds before gently picking it up with her hands. "It's beautiful!"
(Disclaimer: Design was nor created by me. Got it off Google and belongs to a Final Fantasy character)
"Right?" Kouitsu grinned and removed his hands from inside his pockets. "We added some adjustments: 99% accuracy, better firepower, and quicker conversion!"
"It's also light weighted!" Yuki beamed and picked up the dual swords. The bright lights of the lab reflected off the quique's surface and across her face. Her fascination made her heart beat quicker and her gaping mouth wider.
"Yes, we made it lighter so that it won't be a burden to physical endurance as requested by former Senior investigator Daiki Fuse. After your quinque broke in your last mission, he asked for the repair for these adjustments."
"I see... He was always a very thoughtful mentor." Yuki smiled in gratitude and gently raised the quinque in her hand.
"Yes, he was... I was also excited since your quinque is one of a kind design. I will love to see the quinque at work."
"Perhaps I could test it out in a training room. I need to get familiar with it by tomorrow morning." Yuki suggested with a brighter smile.
"Perfect! Let us go then!"

So, uh. I'm back. XD
I needed a lot of time to rethink about this book because I felt really unsatisfied with the previous work. It just felt so out of place thanks to how I just jumped in and kinda wrote whatever. THANK YOU MIDDLE SCHOOL DAYS XD
Anyways, I am back and feeling more motivated in this direction of the story! I have been A LOT, LOT, LOT of research with like 8-15 tabs opened lol! XD
Hopefully, you guys enjoyed this chapter, and I apologize for leaving the book for a long, long time. I hope to write another chapter soon :)
